I will try to update this list as often as possible, but will 'hand over the baton' when Mrs lingyaiyai (hopefully) gets her visa.

  5. My children had British passports issued (Dec '08 and April '11) on the strength of the original Thai birth certificate supported by a professional translation, which had not been 'legalised' by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs in either case.

Both applications were made in person at the British Embassy in Bangkok, although everything will be sent to the British Consulate General in Hong Kong who are responsible for issuing passports in the region.

I didn't produce my wife's Thai birth certificate, but you will need to show the mother's passport (neither she nor the child need to be present).

You will need the full version of your British birth certificate, original Thai marriage certificate supported by a translation, your passport and, of course the fee (something in the region of THB 5000), which can be paid by debit card.

The documents will be copied at the embassy and returned to you immediately, the passport should arrive 3-4 weeks later.

    Good luck!

    Edit: layout

  6. Hi everyone.  Our application was submitted on May 5th. Happy to say we checked online today and saw passport was ready.  Collected it immediately.  Our application was successful!!  Thanks for all the help I've had from this site.

Fantastic news neilo, but please would you clarify the submission date?

We submitted our application on April 5th.  Still waiting.  You can add me to that list too.

  8. ...... I love the life I have I don't need a new hobby because it is enough just to be who I am.

Looks like you've got a new hobby with this thread which seems to be a frenetic attempt to justify 20 years of navel gazing.

  9. Never lie on an insurance application. When an insured event occurs, the company will dig deep, will discover the lie, and will refuse payment.

I agree that any false declaration could render a policy void.

However, there are a few interesting scenarios e.g.

Mr A has a Thai g/f and regularly visits Thailand, spending one month at a time, 4 times a year.

On one of his return trips to the UK he decides he wants to take out life cover and completes a proposal form. On the form he answers "No" to the following question:-

Have you in the last five years lived or worked abroad, are you currently doing

so or do you intend to in the future?

Yesterday he take out £50,000 insurance, tomorrow he moves to Thailand. Later he dies in Thailand. What will the insurance company do ?

Refuse payment - Mr A clearly intended to live abroad when he completed the proposal and, as it takes some time to issue policies, would have been living abroad by the time the cover came into force anyway. He would also have some difficulties if they asked for a medical examination, which they would expect to be conducted in the UK. In any event, insurance companies will almost certainly refuse payment if they have issued a policy at a lower premium than they would have charged had they been told the truth!

We have joint cover with Friends Provident's Isle of Man office, the (fixed) premium was based on my wife being 7 years older than she really is because she is Thai. We were living in Thailand when we made the application. The premium is nearly 3 times as much as like for like would have been at UK rates, but I wanted to be able to understand (and comply with) the small print, which I would never have been able to do out with a locally issued contract even though that may have been cheaper.

  10. Having a eu visa is not the same as being a eu resident.

You can travel with here true the non-eu booth. Other way around is normally not possible.

    Rubbish (the 2nd sentence).

We have entered and left the UK through Heathrow 3 times (the 1st time was before we had children) and have always used the EU passport holder's channel. On each occasion my (Thai) wife was treated with more charm and courtesy than I have ever been when going through UK passport control on my own - although that may be because she is rather easier on the eye than is her husband!

  11. From the OP: .... She also asked for a licence plate with the number 44 or 88.......

wow, a quick pay off, even the educated can be bought to make sure they don't sue afterwards.

Have you considered that this educated person perhaps have come to the conclusion that what she was offered is a better deal than what she should get if she had gone the court way?

Note the should get, not would get

Properly educated people don't believe in "lucky" numbers.

Reason for edit: Needed quotes from earlier posts to put my comment into context.

ALL THAIS !!!-- rich and poor / educated and uneducated even the hiso brigade believe in lucky numbers it is part of Asian culture.

She obviously does not want bad luck again, and hopes a lucky number will protect her

I don't dispute what you say, but you have overlooked my use of the word "properly".

HMMM, pretty easy to find western G7 educated people that don't /won't believe in science including evolution.

    Quite; my case rests.

  14. What you need to seriously doubt is the efficacy of those yellow dixie cups that drop in the back..

Be assured the pilots have something a bit more substantial than a yellow dixie cup, and who really cares if the passengers and the hosties pass out as long as the pilots are awake.......you will wake up when the pilots DESCEND to 10,000 ft again.

A few years ago there has been a plane crash (in Greece) because not only the passengers but also the pilots

    got unconscious.

Pilot was probly on his mobile.

    Grow up

  15. ..... I don't understand why people still fly on Qantas coffins.

The fact that Qantas has not had a fatal accident since 16th July 1951 may be a contributory factor.

They may not have killed anyone since 1951 bit their service record is subject to it being only a matter of time! They used to run maintenance here in Thailand but closed this down. But perhaps the main issue for many not flying the 'jing-jo" is due to shitty service, poor food and certainly a lower standard than most airlines. But the issue of this article - trying to stay a little more on topic - is the fact the aircraft turned back 2 hours out. They did it in the interest of safety of passengers and possibly because there are more Qantas aircraft in BKK than Singapore which was much closer. But the choice to dump fuel would indicate the problem was more than simple so the pilots would have been right in their decision and safety to passengers..

If you had read the OP you would know that the problem was identified shortly after take off, not 2 hours into the flight; the aircraft was airborne for 2 hours.

I imagine it takes some time to dump a full fuel load, which was undoubtedly done to reduce the weight of the aircraft to a safe level for landing, rather than because "the problem was more than simple".
