  1. I rarely ask these sorts of questions, but I have found myself in a strange position. I am currently on a single entry Non-Immigrant O visa. This visa is based on marriage to a Thai. My stamp indicates that I must leave on August 18. However, I am set to move to Korea with my wife for a while on August 25-27 (sorting out the tickets now). I am aware that I could easily leave the country on a visa run. Having done so many of these in the past, I really don't want to be bothered with it while we are moving stuff from Bangkok to Ratchaburi. Furthermore, I was hoping for a bit of a holiday in the islands before leaving. A visa run would cut into valuable time.

I have read that there is an option of a one-time 30 day extention. I don't want to burn that option if I can prevent it. Any thoughts?

PS: My email notifications don't work, so I will check back often ... bookmarking after post ...

  2. I find the hot dogs (well I always get the chili dog) at The Tavern on Soi 4 to be pretty good. At 100 baht, I don't find it expensive. They have a little bbq grill out the window to cook the dogs. The chili could use a little bit of work, but it is alright. I wish they had better buns. Friends haven't had the problems with the buns that I have. I would like them to be a little bit softer. At any rate, they are pretty good!

  3. Seriously, this debate is one that cannot be won. Incredibly, I just read this entire thread. Yes, I drive a motorbike in Bangkok. My bike is legit in the wifes name. I do not have a Thai license. I also do not have any form of a license for a motorcycle. I have never been pulled over in Bangkok. While the wife has been driving, she has been stopped with me on the back. We have always been let go. However, if I were to be stopped, I would simply negotiate it down to 100 baht. I don't care if it goes in the pocket of the cops. I don't care where it goes. It is $3. Who really cares? Some call it corruption ... some call it tea money. To me, that is a price I find acceptable. The people I know here who drive illegally feel the same. They always cough up 100 baht and proceed on their merry way. They have always been stopped for some sort of infraction. The system works well for me!

  4. Indeed, I used to use FBP; however, I have converted to XP myself. It is far better service in my opinion. The prices are reasonable. It is always prompt. I get the gumbo from Bourbon Street quite often.

  5. I have read through most of the Best Burger threads and can't believe that Doug's place on Soi Rangnam has never been mentioned.

Indeed, this place has closed. It is now called Seasoning. I go there quite often. I sampled their burger, and I found it to be tasty. They asked me how I would like to have it prepared. I ordered it medium, and it came exactly as I had ordered which seems to be quite rare.

I have had the burger at the new Big Mango a few times now. It is also quite good in my opinion. They use a fair bit of spice which makes for a different taste than I am used to in Bangkok.

I don't use Thai Visa that much, but I will check out some of these suggestions. The email notification for replies never seems to work.

  6. Looks like I have to get out to the 'dodgy' pubs here again for 2 nights:(

NO YOU DONT.JUST STAY AT HOME OR CAN YOU NOT STAND THE THOUGHT OF NOT DRINKING FOR TWO DAYS?IF SO THEN I THINK YOU MIGHT BE AN ACHOHOLIC.NOTHING TO BE PROUD OFF.HEY I LIKE A BEER EVERY NOW AND THEN,BUT IF ITS NO ACHOHOL DAY ,WHY GO AGAINST THE WISHES OF THE GOOD PEOPLE.HAVE SOME BACKBONE AND TRY TO REFRAIN YOURSELF-YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY FEEL BETTER AFTER 2 DAYS..

Why the heck would I want to do that? I am on vacation at the moment. I want to enjoy myself with a few beers. The last time I checked, I am not Buddhist. Who exactly are these "good people"? I have a backbone. This is exactly why I don't involve myself with this kind of crap. In December, they did this with the elections. I happened to be in Chiang Mai where the police rolled up on us drinking beer. Little attention was given to the matter. Who cares? The Thais certainly don't. My wife certainly doesn't. Guess what ... she is Thai!

  7. It has been said, but it should be said again. That is just the way things go here. I am in Bangkok, but I often am put into a position where I must drive with my nieces on the motorbike. I don't particularly care for it. This is especially true when I have to navigate the big roads. On the small sois or upcountry, it doesn't even remotely present a problem. The children are quite adept with their balance. They refuse to wear a helmet. What is one to do?
