Report Tax-Free Wine Boom in Thailand Spurs Costs and Controversy
Thailaw replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
From an internet source: "While cheaper wines (under 1,000 baht) saw negligible price drops, high-end wines became over 10% cheaper, boosting demand among affluent consumers". I expect that most people (me included) consume wine under (likely well under) B1,000 per bottle, which is why no one has seen a price decrease in wine prices during the last year -- there haven't been any. If taxes had decreased in this segment of the wine market, sellers would have lowered prices -- this notion of "price gouging" is nonsense; The retail market for wine (and other consumables) is very competitive, and selelrs want to sell more. A "a staggering 300% rise in consumption of mid-range wines priced between 3,001 and 5,000 baht within a year", which is a huge increase, is likely because the volume of wine sold in this price range was VERY small, and relative to the sales of wine in the B1,000 and less range, it still is. No one should be worried about the "social impact" of increased sales of wine in the B3,001 to B5,000 range -- total nonsense ("negative impacts on youth" -- what youth are drinking wine in the B3000 to 5000 price range?). And I am very doubtful that government tax revenues have decreased by B600 million, as a 300% increase in volume would more than offset a 10% decrease in tax -- somebody's math is grossly out of wack... There is an agenda behind this story, and I am guessing that it was funded by the Boon Rawd Brewery (the makers of Singha Beer) and its friends.... -
Thanks. This was only 1 price quote from the company that installed my CCTV cameras -- unreasonable IMO. I may be able to find a more reasonable price if I search. But, the solar option at about B1,000 per light looks attractive at the moment. And pretty easy to switch later if something better becomes available.

Please let us know what you find. I share your concern, but I am not an electrician, and the cost of having wired lights properly installed is excessive. I was quoted B10,000 to have 3 lights with a timer installed, which I thought was excessive. I can install the solar lights myself, so the cost is for the lights and that's it.....

Thanks. It is often a struggle here in Thailand to have any idea what you are getting, especially with internet purchases..... I may try a few of each and "take a gamble" on the cheap ones....

This is what I saw when I went to your first Lazada link: ไฟโซล่าเซลล์ มีหลายกำลังวัตท์ 1200w 1000w 900w 800w 350w โซลาร์เซลล์ Solar lights LEDไฟโซลาร์เซลล์ แสงสีขาว สินค้าประกันร้านค้า 5 Ratings 21 Brand:JP(JINPIN) More Lighting from JP(JINPIN)Free Shipping I see now that it is JP and not JD

That's perfect -- thanks a lot. So long as they are "automatic..., meaning they come on when it gets dark and go off when it gets light", they are just what I need. The big plus is that they save the hard wiring. I do lamps on timers inside the house, this is strictly for the outside. The ones that you linked on Lazada are minimum 350W, so unless you tell me otherwise, I will order 5 of these, which should be adequate. Again, thanks very much for your help.....🙏

Great idea, thanks. If I can find lights with a darkness sensor, they would be perfect. I have such sensors on the small lights over the doorway into the garden, which are wired lights. Thanks again.
-
Great idea, thanks. Are these lights set to come on at dusk/dark? How long do they last in one night? I assume that lower watt will last longer -- what size in watts are your lights? Thanks again.

Thanks for the help -- sound like you have way more than I need.... That should keep any intruder away

Thanks for the help; much appreciated. I will consider 10W (and 20W for the back) rather than 20W and 30W.

My house in the Maprachan are was broken into while I was away. They stole the water pump, which I have temporarily locked inside until I improve security around my house. I had CCTV cameras installed last week. Next is flood likghts around the peremeter of the house -- rear, and both sides, and the front. The land is almost 1 rai and the house is 2 story. The side yards are narrow, 20+ meters long and 5 meters wide. The front is small, as the house is positioned close to the road in the front -- if positioned correctly, I think 20W should be adequate for the front. The back is large with a pool. Can someone recommend the "best" size (in Watts) for flood lights? I am sure that 10W is too small; 50W may be OK for the back, but could be too much, as I really want light on the area around the house, and not for the entire back yard. I think, given what I have read, that 20W - 30W should be find for the sides. Will (F) 20W, (S) 20W, (S) 20W and (B) 30W be ok? The cost of the lights is not a major concern, but I would like to keep the running cost to a minimum. Can someone confirm what I am thinking is correct or correct me? Thanks a lot. TL

Update -- When speaking to the ITC representative at the number on the warranty card, I gave her my mobile number. A few hours later a Thai man called and I could not understand him. He hung up. A few minutes later a man called who spoke very good English and asked about my ITC water pump. He seemed to have some knowledge of my problem and the options I had been given, which he understood were not practical. He almost immediately offered to send me a new pump immediately with the old broken pump still with me. He said he would coordinate the delivery of the new pump within 15 minutes and get back to me. He asked that I please send the broken pump to them when the new pump arrives and is installed,, which, of course, I agreed to do. Within 45 minutes I got a message on Lazada from the original seller telling me that they had received instructions from ITC to send the new pump immediately, which they were going to do. He asked me to confirm my delivery address, so I think it is going to be sent. ITC and their staff in Thailand are excellent and incredibly helpful. I will never buy from this seller again, but I have great confidence in and appreciation for ITC. A+++.....

Thanks very much. Unfortunately, I don't see the part I need there.

Within the last 2 weeks I replaced the water pump at my house. It was 10+ years old and was in the house when I bought it. The existing pump is an ITC 250 Watt (the tall round design). Both are made by Hitachi. The new one is short and square. The new pump started to leak within 1 week of installation. I bought it on Lazada. The seller refuses to provide me with the part, and requires that I send the new pump back to him for replacement or refund (he will not send a new/replacement pump until he receives the old one from me). I contacted the local representative on the warranty card and was told that I needed to send the pump to them for repair and it would take about 1 month. I cannot do without the pump for 1 week, let alone 1 month. One option is to buy another ITC pump of the same model and swap it out, and send the broken pump back to the seller hopefully for a refund (he has changed stories/options daily, so I am really not sure if I will get anything from him). The other (preferred) option is to find the broken part here in Pattaya. Hence, the reason for this thread -- Is anyone aware of a shop that sells ITC/Hitachi water pump parts? Reinstalling the old pump would require 2 "installations" as the connection points are totally different at B1,000 each and would be a total loss. Thanks for any help..... TL

Petition for trump ban on U.K. visit gathers votes
Thailaw replied to 3NUMBAS's topic in Political Soapbox
I expect that "your taxes" don't even cover the burden you impose on the UK government. The UK hasn't been "great" since Maggie Thatcher left in 1990. Since John Major it has been all down hill for the UK -- "Great Britian" is a figment of your imagination, as is your delusion about America -- envy is a sign of admiration.... -
I have a house near Maprachan that requires bathroom/kitchen repairs -- new "guts" in toilets, leaks repaired, hot water heaters checked/changed, etc. Can anyone recommend a reliable/reasonable plumber that can do this work in my area. Contact information would be very much appreciated. (I contacted a guy named Toom from an earlier thread, but he said that he does not do this work). Thanks very much for any help. TL.

Best Place to Buy a Used MB in Pattaya Area
Thailaw replied to Thailaw's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
Thanks. 90% of the cars and bikes on FB market place are fake. I'll look again, but it appears to me to be a waste of time. Baht/Sold seems to be a better source that FB, and they have nothing reasonably priced. -
I am looking for a late-model used motorbike for my daughter, 160cc or less. There used to be a good shop on Pattaya Tai next to the Mityon repair shop, but it is closed now. Any recommendations for a shop with a good selection and reasonable prices would be very much appreciated. If you have something in good condition that you want to sell at a reasonable price for a quick cash sale, please let me know (PM me). Thanks a lot, TL

My 13 year old daughter likely needs braces. We live in the Na Jomtien area. I cannot find a recent recommendation for an orthodontist in the Pattaya area. Can anyone recommend an orthodontist that is good and reasonably priced in the Pattaya area of who thay have recent experience/knowledge. Anywhere in the Pattaya area is acceptable, but the closer to Na Jomtien the better. Recommendations for a good general dentist will also be appreciated, as my older daughter and I also need to have some dental work done. Thanks very much for any help. 🙏 TL

Thanks, that is exactly what I am looking for. My existing lights are (I think) standard, normal size -- internal diameter 4" (11cm); external diameter 6" (150mm). I will check Thai Watsadu.

Excellent idea. Thanks a lot.

Well beyond me..... Any your "fix" is exactly what I am trying to avoid, both as to cost and mess, the mess and dust from the ceiling repair would require moving all of the furniture out of the room and be impossible to clean. A dimmer is a far easier solution, which is, I think, equivalent to what you are suggesting. Thanks anyway......
