  1. Hi, my laptop I purchased at Pantip Plaza two years ago has crashed, cannot get it to boot, did a search on Thai visa and tried some of previous suggestions here. My stuff is arriving from Bangkok shortly that has the original box and paperwork in it but I am fairly sure I was never given recovery disks, it was all set up in the shop when I bought it in Bangkok. Has anyone had experience with laptops purchased in Thailand and getting them repaired/data recovered in home country (out of warranty). I called the sony service centre here and they think its a virus and suggested to just delete hard drive and get a new one and reinstall? Also the battery has packed it in, I can buy a new battery here I am told.

Important docs etc I did save onto a stick and back up disks sometime ago, but there would be photos/music still on there. Any advice appreciated.

  2. Currently as reported, the death toll in this terrible tragedy is 181 and over 80 people missing. The fires still continue to burn in areas in the state of Victoria and expecting more hot weather through the week.

My heart and thoughts go out to members in Thailand who have lost friends and loved ones in this terrible tragedy. Nature can be so cruel at times.

The Red Cross are taking donations online (credit card), if anyone would like to make a donation. The website is slow presently as the response to this crisis has been overwhelming.

    Keep safe all.

  3. The salon for tinting I go to is the Sathorn Thani building, (closed Sundays) 022339255. The only thing I would not recommend their is a hair cut. Have not got a current receipt handy but its five minutes walk from Chong Nonsi BTS (McDonalds side). Check the website www.panipa.com for all their branches with maps. I am sure you can get it done at MBK as well, just check with the girls at information and they will point you in the right direction.

You can also have your eyelashes permed/curled before they tint (adds a small curl). Some salons here do both the perming and the tinting at the same time. IMO I think its better to have the perming first (if you chose to) and then go back a few days later for the tinting. Only going by what is recommended in my home country.

As for the extensions, well yes, some have come out already. I got a moto- taxi yesterday and talk about wind in your hair, its now wind in the eyelashes, I suspect they fell out somwhere on Rama 3. I am contemplating a new book, "Bangkok Beauty Fever"....

    cheers

  4. I recently saw an eye doc as part of an overall medical check up at St Louis Hospital. His english was not real good and preferred to speak Thai. He suggested drops, something about assisting deterioration. I chose not to start any treatment as I am returning to my home country next week but will ensure I see a specialist to ascertain what the problem is, and if necessary commence treatment at home. I also obtained a script for glasses.

Today I went to a shop in MBK, small shop, but good selection of frames and as I have the receipt handy, thought I would post prices for the glasses I paid for, if people might like to do a comparison around town. The guy in the shop insisted I have the free eye test with him also and came up with the same result as the Doctors script. The hospital of course giving a much more thorough medical examination.

Eye Trends, MBK Room 51, Paco Zone 6th Floor, phone (662) 77699-1779, fax 668 1627 5643. Eye glasses ready in 45 mins; progressive lens in 24 hours. Can fax prescription to them if necessary from another country and they will EMS glasses back to you!

Decided probably not helpful posting prices as it depends on the brand of course?? duh....

  6. she uemeura is in siam discovery and paragon, probably most department stores.

Hi gals, just reporting back as promised. Called into she uemeura as I was passing yesterday and they will do them but they are only (short time) last overnight at both stores. They can last three days but the lady boy I spoke to said best not to let them go longer because they tend to go all "yucky". He said that their shops in America do have the longer lasting ones, but they dont have in Bangkok as yet.

Didnt make it out to Kho San Rd, as am pressed for time cramming appts before the removalists arrive and in any case didnt want to run into our friend Mr Kookoo!

Ended up doing a walk in at MBK today, Rosemain Salon, 4th floor, 026863621. 800 baht. (The ladys name is Ann) I hope this isnt one of the places girlx, you noted above for eye infections, because its too late for me now! They look great, I must say, am really pleased. Took one hour, initially a bit uncomfortable as they put a protective tape that goes just across your lower inner lid and then you close your eyes over this. Not too bad though, because I fell asleep, and when I did open my eyes it was all a bit blurry and stung a little. After a quick wash with water and cotton wool, all was OK. Can last up to about four weeks if you dont go swimming. Will have to see about that, as I am hitting the surf the day I get back to Aus, so the salt water at least should help with any potential infections!

Sbk, she used little tweezer type instruments and her fingers to adjust the lashes, (followed by a hand fan for a minute or two) to get the last bits of wet glue dry, so yes, the hygiene aspect does concern me a little. I have had the blue/black tinting done at Panipa at Satorn many times, and its just the same as using a mascara brush and it doesnt take as long, so this may also be an option for you. If you have the pedicure/manicure, and eyebrows done at the same time, absolute heaven!

  7. Extended Trading Hours

BTS/Skytrain fast and efficient, even at times when big events being held in Bangkok.

Taxis, motorbike as an alternative, inexpensive.

Can have an appt with Specialist/Surgeon, straight away, as opposed to waiting a month or more in my home country. Even if you have top health cover.

As an inpatient after an op, can stay in bed after the surgeon sees you (no wait) and lounge around watching TV, nice lunch. Have a choice as to when you want to leave the hospital, as opposed to being discharged immediately as the next patient on the waiting list needs your bed, even if it is still warm.

Kasikorn Bank efficient in getting a new ATM card, PIN, and bankbook, no posting out or delays. The ticket numbering machine they use here I think is also great, no great lines of impatient people pushing in front of you to be seen by a teller "because they have to get back to work" or whatever. No money missing to date! Bank at home takes days to respond to an email query, they dont work on weekends and then two days to clear the backlog (apparently) of emails.

My dentist has portable flat screen TV on a flexible stand and it can be adjusted so I can watch the tennis while having my fillings! This definately has the thumbs up from me.

  8. I'm thinking that having kids in the US would increase the chances of not getting a visa for one or both. They have to prove ties to the homeland and a reason for coming back. Everything you laid out indicates a lot of reason to leave Thailand and never come back.

I agree that the cards are stacked against them. I told my wife to not to get her expectations up too high... but I can't not try for my mom in-law (the indignity and demoralization of a visa rejection from US immigration is mild compared to the consequences I might face otherwise!)

In your research freddiefunk, you might have a look at www.visajourney.com it has updated detailed info on individual circumstances of many people who want to/or have applied for visas to the US. Good luck!

  9. i got them a few times from angela's (or angie's?) on soi chanasongkram behind the temple across from khao san road. i like them but they only seem to last 3 weeks or so rather than the 2 months they say. it costs 800b and takes at least an hour to get them put on (they glue in individual lashes). i would not go anywhere other than angela's as i got them at other places and i 1) got eye infections from them, and 2) they glued the eyelashes to clumps of my existing lashes so that eventually my lashes all fell out in those glued-together clumps and i had to wait for them to grow back. :D i wear contacts and never had problems with the ones from angela's. just ask for the medium-length ones so they don't look freakishly long. i love them but i just never kept up maintainence and have fallen out of the habit of getting them. i also have gotten my eyelashes dyed a couple of times and that is nice too. a friend of mine goes to she uemuera (sp?) and buys their false lashes kits. expensive but they look natural and she can use them for about 6 months- the trick is just learning to put them on! i think the counter people can help you with that. they have lots of great styles, but i haven't yet tried them....

Thanks girlx, I will make an appt next week and let you know how it goes sbk. :o

  10. Hi Girlx, someone recommended St Louis Mansions to me awhile back, other members might know more about it, 138 Soi Satorn, 13 South Satorn Road.

BTS Chongnonsi if you walk towards Naratiwat ( 5 mins from Empire Tower), there are some new condos just recently finished. How they are going to fill them, I dont know, might be worth a look.

There a quite a few little Soi's between Satorn Road and Naratiwat with heaps of smaller townhouse/apartment blocks, some have signs on them in Thai, might be worth doing a walk around.

I wouldnt bother with Maple House Soi 10, if you need good internet speeds, half the stuff in gym is broken, nice roof top garden though and has a pool.

Baan Thiripa, Soi 7 Satorn, nice well maintained complex and good management.

If you have the time, I would bargain, there are heaps of empty places around at the moment.

    Good luck

  11. Thanks everyone for info.

The company is HIF in WA, fairly small I would say but have been with them for many years when I lived/worked there. Lots of hoo ha the first few months while I was away with temporary suspension forms and such (finally they agreed to a further one year), they have clearly stated in recent email that immediate cover will apply (in my case) from the day of return, provided all correct docs are provided and contributions paid for within one month. If not, then then the new member/reinstatment rules come into effect. Hence, if this is the case (for immediate cover), I will obtain what ever they ask for i.e passport stamped. :o

Thanks to the poster who included info on medicare as I was wondering about this also, will have to go and see them, the card is now way out of date.

Oh, I am soooo excited to be returning and dealing with all this fun stuff! Not.

    Cheers

  12. Forget the bellbottoms, its those tight spandex covered long legs, and the ripped shirt with his nipples showing that I remember well in his early days with Faces!! Perhaps "Forever Young" from his American Songbook Album might be more appropriate at 65.  He donated all royalties of "Do You Think I'm Sexy" to UNICEF after he was sued.  I would go and see him for sure even if they wheeled him on stage, and if I didnt have my glasses on I wouldnt be able to see what he looks like now anyways.  "Maggy", "Tonights the Night", "Sailing"........all great rock n roll classics. sigh........... :o

  13. Agree absolutely, lessons are the only way to go imo, especially for women. Once the bad habits are learned from well meaning friends its very hard to correct them, confidence is lost and then its easy to lose interest or just give up. I never looked back after having lessons, and still pay to have refresher/private classes when I can afford it.

In addition, advantages of lessons incorporate how to warm up before playing and reducing injury ( especially shoulder joints), and tips on suitable clubs to buy etc. I wouldnt say I can play well, but I have the confidence to give it a go and enjoy the ongoing challenge of perfecting the skills and techniques of the "swing".

  14. Hi, I went to this Fair today. As well as the usual resorts/spa discounts,  products and cultural shows to promote tourism in the north eastern region, I noticed a lot of family/farm stay type places advertised. (Dont know how good these are) but I thought I would post it here for families with kids who might be looking at something a little different to do in Thailand, as an alternative to the beaches. They also had a lot of camping places around National Parks advertised as well. Stuff to do and see In Surin Province.

    Free admission.

Venue QSNNC, 60 New Ratchadapisek Rd, New Ratchadapisek 02-203 4231/4 (MRT Queen Sirikit)

    Yummy Food too!

  15. I just notified my Health Insurance Company that I will require to reinstate my membership with them when I return to Oz soon. Have to have boarding pass and copy of entry stamp attached to the form. OK fine with that. Its just that the email also stated "ensure you receive your entry stamp on arrival into Australia, we are noticing a considerably large amount of members who are not receiving their stamp and should this occur it results in an inconvenience for yourself..............".

So I was just wondering,  is this just an oversight when people are returning home through immigration. I received a stamp last time I went back, and can understand if occasionally some people would pass through and be so tired from the flight,  they just dont get one and not even realize it. Or from immigrations point of view, it is not necessary for them to place the stamp in returning resident's passports anymore? Apart from the requirement of this company, has anyone not got a stamp and had problems (inconvenience) as a result?

    tks

  16. Hi, not sure if I was doing this correctly but I have sent two messages to mods requesting my thread in the Ladies Forum now be closed. When I check the sent messages the box is blank.  The thread is How to Deal With An Angry Boyfriend, and appreciate all responses but would now like to have it closed! Is this possible. Kind regards

  17. I really appreciate everyone's input on this. I had read about that dreadful murder of the German woman and got into quite a state over it, hence the reason for my post to ascertain what others thoughts were.  "

We found another apartment today for my friend in another area, which is actually going to be more convenient for her if she obtains the job/ position she is after (and its cheaper than here). Have organized removalists for the weekend. I will give her hand so as to make sure the removalists dont spill the beans about her new location to any of the staff. She is determined to stay in Bangkok, (I dont agree) but thats her choice. Family members (two big burly brothers are coming to visit for a holiday shortly, so this will be good).

She has enough money to get a ticket home instantly if need be and we will keep in regular contact via email etc. Will need to get familiar with the restaurants, shops etc in the new location and I have encouraged her to increase support networks, both Thai and Expat.

As for me, I will leave for a few days and do another trip up to beautiful (cold) Changrai, and will only have a couple of days back in my apartment before I leave the country. So if anyone does turn up here, I wont be around to answer the door. I also intend to contact the nice/cute policeman who gave me 120 baht when my bag was pickpocketed a few weeks back and give him a bottle of scotch as a thank you. Good idea to have a friend in the Thai police force me thinks!

    cheers

  18. Thankyou for info. Went their today.

No cost, the officer said it would take 14 days, I asked him if they could process earlier and I would collect it ,not a problem.

Photocopies,  5baht each from the little shop behind their office. Front page of passport, visa page, and departure card required.

When you fill out the form they give you, you must sign/certify photocopies individually.

They did not require any other docs such as proof of residence. (Note: I just need the certificate only, not for WP)

Photo required and they have a special room and tripod set up for this with the delightful (and flirty) "Police Senior Sargeant Major" to attend. You can smile for the photo!

Fingerprint process was a bit messy, much laughter and sanook! Then to the little bathroom where everyone piles in to scrub the ink off their hands, again much laughter and sanook!!!!

Back to information desk, where all paperwork is carefully checked and pinned together, and then directed to another desk to speak with the "Commander, Police Senior Major". He checked through paperwork again and gave me a "PCCS Customer Service Feedback Form" to fill out.  Of course I ticked everything as excellent! (Wonder if the same form will be handed out at Immigration Department?)

Brought some little snacks at the cafeteria onsite to give the staff.

On the sign in english at the front it says "do not close for lunch".

The enquiry number to call is 0 2205 2168-9

Ummmmm, wonder if the Commander can get me a job there!

  19. I have taken Reductil in the past, gave me headaches. I had to get serious about the weight loss after the full check up at BNH Nov 2007 I was 77 kilos, height 156, pre-diabetes mellitus, elevated LDL, high cholesterol, you name it, I had it, in black and white. I was so tired and so unfit at that time.  That same day I made an appointment with Dr Pongtorn Kietdumrongwong, dietitian.

Initially, on a seven day menu of 1,400 calories/per day (Western), daily exercise programme, daily food diary (have to take this in for each appointment). I love Thai food and slowly started to incorporate more Thai dishes into my diet once I had lost some weight and became more knowledgable of calories/ingredients and correct portions. (I also learnt a lot from this board!)

More importantly, once you lose the weight how to maintain is the key. Kept up monthly appointments with Dr P when I was in Thailand and not out travelling, and I think back to all the excuses I gave him why I couldnt excercise because of gammy knee, etc, too hot to play golf, couldnt cope with the diet any more, too depressing!! Any excuse I made, he would come up with a positive way around it.  So for me, the support, education and monthly pep talks has been money well spent.   He told me statistically at six months is when most people give up. I am now at 60 kilos, and still losing, and am very happy with the result!

  20. i have heard far too many stories of situations like this gone very bad in my time in LOS, and i would not tempt fate. she should definitely consider moving apartments and staying under the radar.

Thanks everyone for advice so far. We are catching up for a drink tonight so will discuss options and suggest she block the emails and if she chooses to move I can give her a hand.

Girlx, their was talk some time back about a book, cultural differences, beach boys etc.  Did this get off the ground? If so, could be an additional story coming your way!
