  1. My farang friend who lives next door ended a relationship in August abruptly with Laos boyfriend when she found out he was married with a couple of small kids, the usual story of lies, deceit, met his family etc. Sent him packing (with some baht) and told him not to come back. Wont go into too much more detail as it is really between them and I have referred her to Thaivisa if she would like to discuss more.

I can say that she changed SIM. She also disconnected landline, after a few threatening phone calls from an anonomyous guy in northern Thailand threatening her to "leave Thailand now". She is still currently receiving angry unstable/emails (5 months now) from ex and the latest one saying if he doesnt find another tourist/victim soon he is going to come "to get her". She did tell him early on that she had gone to the police in Bangkok and her embassy and reported him, and she herself would be leaving Thailand shortly. (Unfortunately, this was my advice, and it appears it hasnt worked, he seems to know she is still here).   She just thought, as I did, he would calm down eventually  (he lives works/Laos not Thailand). IMHO dont think he would have the cash to do a trip back to Thailand.  She has  moved on with her life (not easy) and has a tentative job offer in Bangkok and doesnt really want to move apartments, would be a last resort.

I am probably being paranoid, I am concerned for my friend, and albeit perhaps selfishly, this loser knows where I live, I did meet him on a couple of occasions. If he, or one of his friends/relatives take it upon themselves to actually put this threat into action, I am worried they might come to my door looking for her. I am leaving myself in a few weeks and want to avoid any confrontations. Any advice would be appreciated?

  2. Call embassy now and leave message "lost passport" and your mobile number you will get a quicker response then. 023446399

Take ID, your're drivers licence? Credit Card? something with photo good. Passport photos if you have? Copy of lost passport, visa? Your return ticket with you also.

Go to police office in building in Suan Plu next to immigration and make a police report. Use this number for english translation if you need it was posted on Thaivisa yesterday 1156.

Walk back around the corner up from the Shell Service station to Aus Embassy. You will fill out application form there. Show them your ticket. They will hurry it up. I think the cost was 2,500Baht this was a few weeks back, you need to pay in cash. Keep receipt you can claim this on your travel insurance or back in Aus when you return. Will have limited validity but no matter. Embassy also require two passport photos, but they are a special size, if need be they will send you to building next door and you can get them done quickly there.

Go back to immigration, (get a copy of emergency passport on way in one of the copy shops, front pages, copy of your police report to take back to Aus with you. At immigration front desk, fill out lost/stolen passport form, show them your ticket. And letter from embassy which will explain why you have an emergency passport. I wasnt given a number at the time to wait, just had to go to the desk they sent me to.

Keep in mind immigration go to lunch 12.00 to 1.00. They will stamp your passport, no cost and you are on your way. Good luck.

  3. I was sent to the nearest police station when I was pickpocketed at Saphin Taskin, Loy Kratong. The BIB I spoke to near the scene, gave me 100baht to get home and gave mototaxi 20baht to get me to the nearest police station to make the report. If I didnt go straight away I knew I would probably not want to go at all and face them. Had visions of being bribed or something worse! They didnt speak any english and couldnt have been more helpful. It took the young policeman just over two hours, to fill out the report, he was so nervious dealing with the farang madam, I felt a bit sorry for him. He couldnt believe how much stuff had been taken, various shopping cards, credit card, passport. All I wanted to do was get home and start cancelling my cards. Follow phetavoi's advice, you have to remain calm and show respect and patience, its the only way here. I didnt find out until later he didnt write down that I was pickpocketed, the insurance girl picked this up straight away, (made some comment to me, about having a man in my room who stole it! As this appears to be how the majority of passports disappear here). My reply to her was rude, and I can tell you it resulted in delays and problems with that company as a result!) how was i to know the report being in Thai. So have some one look at it who reads Thai just to check.

In addition, when I fronted with the emergency passport to immigration, I was not on the system as having done a visa run to Mae Sai, so I was effectively on overstay according to their records. (The police may have even know this when I was there if they checked. Had I have been rude, impatient at the station, then yes problems could have arisen). I was told to go to interview room XXX at immigration and the officer, female, gave me a really hard time, was rude, abrupt, interrogating the whole time in Thai. Sat for three hours just reading my book and smiling when she spoke to me etc. The police report I gave her didnt have incident on it so I can only assume she thought I was on the game or something!!!ha, ha. I have no doubt that if i had offered some money I would have been put back on the system. They stamped for one month and i was happy with that just to get out of there. Then asked me to come back the next day and held my passport overnight. All a bit weird. As luck would have it my original passport got handed back in. Took that to the officer and she changed the stamp to correct the mistake. I left smiling and wai ing and thanking but i can tell you she seemed even madder. In hindsight, it would be better to take a respectable Thai person with me, so if you can arrange this I feel it would be much better. NOTE: Have a copy of your passport and the VISA in a safe place somewhere!!!!!

  4. Hi mbf

Welcome to Thailand, I must admit I am a little jealous as you are just arriving and I am relunctantly returning back to Aus, so I wish you all the best in settling in to your new life in the City of Angels.

Now, for your table setting, check the classifieds section on Thaivisa homepage site, maybe something for sale there.  A good information site is www.AngloINFO.com. Chutuchak weekend market has heaps of wooden settings. For something in Rattan, try the many shops on the odd numbered side of Sukhumvit Rd from Sois 23 to 63. Interesting range of teak, try Shunthai, 5th floor Centralworld and 3rd floor The Mall Bangkhae. Habitat 4th floor, Siam Discovery Centre for modern furniture, expensive but good quality. CG Furniture, modern designer furniture with Jim Thompson fabrics, they will also custom make pieces. Home Pro a bit less pricy and basic designs. MBK top floors have various furniture outlets as well.

You might be interested in contacting ANZWG - Australian and New Zealand Womens Group, and if not already familiar, Austcham Thailand business events.

I went along to one of the Farang Women in Bangkok (Facebook) functions. Although the crowd a bit younger than me, they were a very friendly group and I was made to feel very welcome.

I have attended a couple of the Thaivisa nights, one in Bangkok and one in Changmai and met some nice members and their partners, so you and hubby should have a great time tonight.  I wont be there as I am stuck at home with the dreaded flu and dont want to spread my germs!  have fun and enjoy your stay in Thailand./quote]

Ooops, my mistake, the function is of course is tomorrow night. Have fun and Happy New Year to all on the ladies forum.

  6. you worried about having to pay a few baht to convert all those 50 satang coins girlx or as I suspect too embarrassed to walk into a bank and change coins? wink.gif

no actually i was more worried about making the poor teller count it all, but if that's the way is it then oh well. you would think they would have machines to do it.

It's like we're living in the jungle, or something.

I dont worry about the "poor teller" at my bank, he gives me the bags and calls the cleaner over to help me count it up and then of course I have to give her a tip!!!!!!

  7. Called into St Louis Catholic Church today (near St Louis Hospital). Weekday buffet B300, to get a complimentary pass to the revolving roof deck.  (You used to be able to go to the top as long as you bought a drink so ring and check first if you dont want to eat there.)

Massage and Day Spa, Facial; Manicure and pedicure close to where you are staying. Probably cheaper too than centre of town.

Check daily X-Press Magazine on line (Nation) for happening events (store sales, current gallery exhibitions etc.) Can pick this up for free in a lot of the coffee shops in the city.

Your daughter may like to log on to Face Book (Farang Girls in Bangkok) to see what social meet ups might be on in the evening. Also check ladies forum Thaivisa.

Although her first trip from home country, once she is confident on the Skytrain system, carries a map and mobile, she will be fine if the two of you get seperated. Have fun and wish you a quick recovery from your op!

  9. Hey, I have just replied on another thread on this forum regarding Thai Airways promotions.  The procedures to follow to get a new pin if you are a Royal Orchid Member, or to try to update your profile, to me, is very complicated and quite frankly hilarious.

I got to thinking later today that really what is the point of us all complaining to each other on these threads.  Although information shared here can often be helpful, does Thai Airways really care, does their marketing section read our complaints and suggestions for improvements?

Here is my suggestion; go to the website, at the very top of the page they have a feedback form. You dont have to have been on a flight with them to fill this out, send it in.  Maybe not a good idea if everybody on Thaivisa did this at the same time (computers might crash or something). Might have to wait a year or so, who knows, could be interesting.  :o

  10. No checked the spam.  Nothing there.  I have often wondered why I never get anything from them, assumed from the usual high price of their flights they are doing really well so dont need to market. If they do need to drum up business now, how about this scenario.

Operator - Madam, as I can verify your membership number and as a valued customer I  can have a customer service officer email you our current promotion. Or if you would like us to post it to you, are your details currently the same as we have on record?

Me - Kup Khun Kar, I would appreciate that. (Thinking...due to recent events here I am still waiting on mail sent a month ago, so wont risk the post).

Operator - If you go to our website, we have a secure link that says "Update your profile" if you fill this out, we can then ensure you have all current information on our promotions. You can also obtain a new pin by clicking on the function and can send to you by email.

Me - Kup Khun Kar, thank you. (Thinking....nice service, even if they are a bit pricey...do some research on Thaivisa and see if it matches flight service)

On their website at the very top they have a feedback form. Filled that out, (not enough room to list all my suggestions!) so will see if I get anything in my inbox.

    Cheers

PS  If everyone on Thaivisa takes two seconds to fill out the feedback form on their website, especially if you have had a flight with them..who knows! miracles do happen.

  11. Hi, just for the record.  I am a Royal Orchid Plus Member with this airline.  I rang to ask why I had not received any emails regarding promotions and I would also like to log into my account.  I have the card with membship number which I quoted over the phone and was able to get this information from customer service.

If you have forgotten your PIN number you send an email on their website, and as a Royal Orchid Plus Member your new PIN will be sent to your home address in writing (in four to six weeks!).  Great if you are living in Thailand and have given your home address, and you are not wanting to book a ticket within the next few days?)  address in another county, not so great. "No cannot, email you back with a PIN this is not the procedure".

Alternatively, send a fax to the head office in Bangkok with your details, including your passport number, credit card details etc and they will send it out to you by mail.  Or you can take the option of visiting Head Office in Bangkok, by taking BTS Mochit station, and then take taxi ten minutes to the office.

Thanks to the previous post that shows the promotions of Thai Airways, as in my case, as a member I will never take up an offer now or in the future with them.

  12. Makro Store on Naratiwat sell heaps of them, many brands I have never heard of.  I bought a Maneki Neka and had to take it back after I used it twice, the element broke down on it. Only paid 900 Baht for it, so no surprises there.

Have Panasonic in Oz, which I used everyday and could leave cooked warm rice in it for many hours without it sticking for three years, never had a problem with it. My Japanese and Korean students living with me also gave it the thumbs up.

I think it wise to spend the money on a good quality brand with warranty if you are going to cook rice a lot. Xmas sales now on at Central, Paragon might be worth a look.

  13. Hi mods

I posted yesterday; topic - Passport Validity -Thailand Visas/Work Permit Forum.  It now shows up as 4 replies but I cant seem to view them for some reason.  I did answer the poll at the same time on favourite airlines, is something stuck there?  Or are the replies mine?  anythings possible having a heap of trouble with this connection lately.

    Appreciate your assistance

  14. Hi Ubonjoe

I checked with the embassy and no my original stolen (that got returned) passport was not cancelled but they did cancel it in two seconds flat while I was there and gave it back to me. OK fine.

    Oh wait! there's more............................

My plan was now to go to Suan Phlu immigration with both passports and apply for the last 30 day extension on the double entry tourist visa. I just read the following quote from KamnanT dated 11/2008. "valid visa in an expired/cancelled passport is OK as long as you have a valid replacement passport".

The entry stamp in the replacement passport is 3rd January 2009. So I understand I would need to go before this date to apply for extension.  My concern now is the replacement passport expires 13 June 2009. I just calculated 5 months and 18 days, oh hel_l, just short of six months. I had planned to apply for a renewal passport once I get home (re cost etc)

I have a one way ticket back to OZ booked on 25th Jan.  Could change this and bring it forward 10 days or so.  Even applying for a new passport tomorrow I am not confident it will even be completed before 3rd Jan. I have to apply for a copy of birth certificate etc first. What do you think????

    many thanks

  15. You said first that emergency passport expired in June and then a new temp passport in January you lost me there.

Did they cancel out your old passport and so you only have the emergnecy/temp passport(s)?

Immigration would do the extention. The 6 month rule on is only when you enter. But which passport are you going to use the January dated one or the June one.

You should not need a birth certificate because you already have a passport to show.

Thank you for your quick response ubonjoe.  Apologies for the confusion. Oh Lordy,  I am so confused myself over this I am getting a migraine!

    To clarify:

    1. Original passport expires 18 Jan 2011.

    2. Emergency Passport expires 13 Jun 2009.

You brought up a good point as to whether the original passport has even been cancelled. I dont think it has. No cut off corners, or cancelled stamps etc. Will front up at the embassy to check this. Is it legal to have two valid passports with different numbers?

The officer at immigration told me I must show both passports original and emergency. New Emergency passport  (2009) has one full page of corrected entry stamp with crossing out/numbers all over it and immigration officer's signature.

If my original passport  (2011) is still valid do you think immigration would be OK about putting the extension 30 days in it? This would be the better option as I am not sure about entry stamp to Hong Kong with less than six months using the emergency passport.

    tks

  16. Hi, my passport was stolen with (validity to January 2011).  I went straight to Aus embassy and got an emergency passport issued (validity to 13 June 2009).

Immigration issued me with a stamp for one month in the new passport as there was no record of an exit/entry from Mae Sai in the system, activating my 2nd entry on double entry TR from Vientiene (even though I did have a copy of Vientiene visa, and the departure card). Anyway to cut a long story short, and luckily for me,  the original passport got handed into the embassy. Went back to immigration and had the correct entry stamp transferred to new passport which expires 3 Jan 2009.

My concern is, I would like to apply for 30 days extension at immigration paying 1900baht. Will this be a problem at immigration with the new temp passport only being valid until 13 June 2009?. Also it only has three blank pages in it (I plan to stop off in Hong Kong for a few days on return to Australia?).

To apply for a new passport now I am concerned about delay with Xmas hols coming up and from what I understand from aus embassy website would have to produce birth certificate etc. Have tried to call the embassy about this and left messages for someone to call back but I guess they are busy with backlog of mail or whatever.   Would I have to carry three passports with me?

    Advice? tks

  17. Does anyone know a place in Bangkok where to buy kites as a gift for my friend's niece and nephew she can take back to Oz as a Chrissy present?

We had a look at the night bazaar Lumpini, and couldnt find anything there?

    tks in advance

Mods, could you please transfer this question to the Sports, Hobbies, Activities section, might be more appropriate there.  Thank you

  18. I have used agoda.com many times in the last 2 years, no problem with them so far.  Booked once with a company called travelbox.com and did have problems getting my money refunded when they at first confirmed/paid a hotel booking with Novatel, and the hotel told me on check in they never accept bookings with this company. Got a refund eventually.
