The guy is moving to Texas.   I was immediately reminded of the following story I had read:   

The Two Travelers

There was once a traveler who was walking from a village in the mountains to a village in the valley.

As he walked along, he saw a monk working in a field and asked, “I’m on my way to the village in the valley, can you tell me what it’s like?”

The monk looked up and asked the man where he had come from.

The man responded, “I have come from the village in the mountains.”

“What was that like there?” the monk asked.

“Terrible!” the man exclaimed, “no-one spoke my language, I had to sleep on a dirt floor in one of their houses, they fed me some sort of stew that had yak in it and the weather was atrocious.”

“Then I think that you will find that the village in the valley is much the same,” the monk noted.

A few hours later another traveler passed by and he said to the monk, “I am on my way to the village in the valley, can you tell what it’s like?”

“Where have you come from?” enquired the monk.

“I have come from the village in the mountains.”

“And what was that like?”

“It was awesome!” the man replied, “No-one spoke my language so we had to communicate using our hands and facial expressions. I had to sleep on the dirt floor which was really cool as I’ve never done that before. They fed me some sort of weird stew and I have no idea what was in it but just to experience how the locals lived was great and the weather was freezing cold, which meant that I really got a taste of the local conditions. It was one of the best experiences of my life.”

“Then I think that you’ll find that the village in the valley is much the same,” responded the monk.

Most likely he'll be doing another youtube video in a year or so telling people how Texas sucks and Thailand had such great people.     

Travelers checks?  Really?  Did I read that right?      I can imagine the reaction trying to spend those at the farmers market.

They were the same 2 actors who were grandpa and Lurch on the Adams family.  
Good stuff, both shows.

Been a member since 2003 (thaivisa.com)  but this Aseannow site just doesn't work for me on my PC  using Windows 10. (Google chrome) 

I get to the homepage and then anything I click on from there just goes nowhere?  This has been going on for at least 6 months.   Anybody know a solution?

came to this thread expecting to hear from others about inexpensive, yet decent phones. Instead, I find an obvious troll post on the 2nd answer and so many fell for it.   Wouldn't it be better if the admins would just delete a post like that?  Or is it that they like the trolls ruining a thread like this?       Or else, just learn to spot a troll?  

Anyway, I have a Samsung that I bought 2 1/2  years ago.  Not the cheapest but it takes great pictures, has lots of memories and is quite durable.    It's a  Galaxy S20 I believe.

Black Rock is pretty awesome IMO.  Also the Dragon Campground in the same area.    You need to walk to get to both though.

If you're just one person, the Smart bus is only 100 baht and almost as quick as a cab.  
(if it's leaving soon) They leave every hour, on the hour.   

100 baht to Talang, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Rawai.    All are the same price.   
Great bus!   Friendly drivers.

I have a BIG friend who needed some shirts.

I think they'll be around as long as the gas prices stay high. (unlimited money and don't know what to do with it all)  
I'll enjoy watching as long as it lasts.   The old style golf on TV was too boring.    

It is the future.  Here starting already. 
I first saw it in Sweden 3 years ago. (before covid) and was shocked and scared. 
But you get used to it. 
We still had some cash because the reindeer herders would only take cash for the boat rides, but most everywhere else was app or credit card only.  

So, now it's becoming mainstream in Thailand. 
I'm sure it'll be rough for some for a while. 
Sort of like smart phones.  
But we got used to them, didn't we?   (well most of us anyway)

Just came back from a 3,500 km road trip (10 days) from Phuket to northern Thailand and many places in between. 
I'd say about 95% of Thai people were wearing masks everywhere we went in rural Thailand (we didn't hit any big cities and didn't stay in any cities bigger than Chumpon)      
But back in Phuket now, only about 70% of Thai people wearing them and about 50% of farangs. 
Just my observation.   
 

I believe the best ones are quite remote and it's advantageous to stay on their grounds. 
Is THAT what you are looking for?  
If so, yes, the Amanpuri is probably the highest end one. 
But there are so many.  
Some are closer to other (night) action in case you want to experience more than just high end amenities.

For example the Pullman near Naithon beach is nice, as well as the Hilton in Karon.   Both very nice and near good beaches.

Camera quality is MUCH better.

Memory is bigger (which not only means you can take lots of pics and videos, but you can download many apps (and they work!)

Longevity  (quality again) 

More RAM  (so you can do more, faster) 
I normally find that people who have cheap phones don't use them for much.

That's funny.  Because I had 2 MG-B's back in the late 60's, early 70's. 
Both took lots of work to keep them going.  (but fun to drive and looked good when they were working LOL)

So, I have an old bias towards any car that says MG.

There are 18 tourists here now.   
Supply and demand might give you a hint on how much you could get.

In hindsight, which school do you recommend now? Does your kid speak fluent Thai and English? 

Sorry, I don't come on this site very often, and just now saw this. 
Yes, he speaks both fluently.  Mostly because  I am a native English speaker and corrected him throughout his life and he started in the Montessori school when it was in Rawai and had real Montessori teachers.  (i don't know if they can still say that though)          He speaks Thai more because that's all a lot of his friends speak.  But his English is perfect.    In school he is no 1 or 2 in his English class.  (he says)      Good luck.

My son went to Darasamuth and then Thai Hua (where he is now).  

Both schools are quite near each other in town.  
Thai Hua much less expensive.  Only around 52,000 per year.  
Studying Chinese language is mandatory at Thai Hua. 
I didn't know they even teach it at Darasamuth.   
Some teachers are good and some:  not so good, at both schools. 
That's what it really comes down to isn't it?   

If you visit both campuses, I think you'll see that Thai Hua is a cut above. With their own music building, swimming stadium, rubberized track, etc.   
The Thai kids really seem to dislike learning Chinese though.
