  1. To my shame I must admit to have missed the part of "she had not had any thoughts on the new lineup" which may just be Thai 'lost in translation' or indeed saying that Ms. Yingluck simply had been too busy to consider the new lineup (as set / proposed / suggested by ...).

Anyway PM's Office Minister Worawat Ua-apinyakul has said six days ago "he believed any reshuffle would have to be waited until after August 12."

Yer wait til after the Queen birthday celebrations

  2. In the US system of jurisprudence, politicians and judges are beyond the reach of libel and defamation laws. As public officials, they are regarded as fair game and the slander gets pretty vicious. Even where slander and libel laws can be applied, a person must show damages. No harm, no foul.

Let's face it, libel and defamation laws in Thailand and many other countries are used to stifle dissent and political discourse. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Very true, particularly paragraph 2. Exactly why I referred to Ahbist as a sissy for resorting to Defamation. One should not be in politics if they cannot handle public scrutiny.

    So very true..............

  3. EIT slams Government’s water management projects

BANGKOK, 31 July 2012 (NNT) - The Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) has suggested the government overhaul its water management and flood prevention projects while allowing participation from all sectors.

On 30 July 2012, the EIT held a seminar with seven other relevant organizations to discuss the conceptual plan for the construction of water management and flood prevention systems in accordance with the government’s projects.

EIT President Suwat Chaopreecha said the plan was not supported by academic theories, especially in terms of design and construction.

The EIT and the seven organizations therefore suggested that the government should allow all sectors to voice their opinions on the plan and form a committee of engineering experts to screen and summarize the opinions.

The institute also called on the government to make sure that the plan would not pose threat to nature and the way of life of local people.

The institute president stated further that the government should re-prioritize the water management and flood prevention projects and allow the civil sector to inspect them.

So that just kicked off last month. Now I'm really impressed. He has two more months to go cleaning that mess up AND he's going to solve the problem in the south.

  5. The PTP government are at loggerheads......

post-46292-0-06698000-1343691484_thumb.jpg The ex's faction just want money and position. Position requires a stable government, so they are happy to stall.

  6. Korn cited figures from a Thailand Development Research Institute study that found for every Bt100 of the government's spending on the scheme, only Bt17 reaches the rice farmers.

So 83% of every baht spent on this scheme is siphoned off before it reaches the rice farmer. Yingluck must be very proud of her governments achievements to lift the living standard of the rural poor with this and the credit card policies. In reality it should be Yingluck calling for a review not Korn, but we know she doesnt like political stuff like leadership ect.

  7. I wonder if the original plan for the new airport was suppose to be larger but it was gradually "down sized"? I remember when I arrived here 8 years ago, there was a 2 page ad in Time Magazine (paid advertisement) bragging how the new airport would be the "hub" of Asia and how much larger it would be... When I compare the restrooms at the airport where you have just two urinals and 2-4 toilets for the men's restroom, then see where the restrooms in the new airports in Seol, Hong Kong, and Beijing I wonder if cuts were made? But I have learned "this is Thailand" where building codes, building plans, even laws made by the government are not to be taken seriously, can be altered - just a guide line.

Are some of the toilets entrances still built over by the King duty free shops?

  8. I can understand the UDD feeling towards Thaksin's pervertion of their goals............

    February 16th, 2010

We, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) are determined to see Thailand become a nation where the principles of democracy, human rights, and equal justice are not only espoused but upheld.

In the coming months, we will launch a campaign aimed at uniting the Thai people in opposition to this junta and bringing about free and fair elections. This campaign is based upon 6 principles:

    1) Achieving the goal of establishing a genuine democracy that has the King as our Head of State, with political power belonging exclusively to the people.

    2) Dissolving the 2007 Constitution and restoring the 1997 Constitution, which may then be amended through a transparent, consultative and democratic process.

    3) Bringing Thais together in an effort to solve our political and socio-economic problems, recognizing that such efforts must stem from the power of the people.

    4) Implementing the rule of law, due process and a system of equal justice for all, free of any obstructions or double-standards.

    5) Uniting all Thais who love democracy, equality, and equal justice within all facets of society, in an effort to deconstruct and move beyond the Amartyatippatai (Aristocracy) system.

    6) Using exclusively non-violent means to achieve these objectives.

BANGKOK (AFP) - Militants shot dead four soldiers and wounded two others early Saturday in Thailand's volatile south, an army spokesman said, as a surge in violence since the start of Ramadan continued. http://au.news.yahoo...ive-thai-south/

Muslims have begun fasting for the start of the Ramadan holy month in Indonesia, Malaysia, and elsewhere around Asia, but the somber occasion was marred in Buddhist-dominated Thailand by two bomb blasts that killed one person and injured seven http://www.nwasianwe...n-ramadan-fast/

Five policemen were killed yesterday and another wounded by a car bomb attack in the Raman district of Yala in restive south Thailand.

    The sixman squad from Tha Thong Police Station, which was assigned to escort teachers at U Poh Shool, was on a mobile patrol before arriving near a bridge where a silver Isuzu pickup truck with hidden explosives was parked.   10. If one looks at the aircraft industry newsfeeds;

Airlines are delaying deliveries of the new AB380 because of the wing cracks, with the EU approval for the proposed corrective measures outstanding. As the reports state, airlines do not want the new AB 380's until the issue is corrected as they don't want to pull the aircraft from service once put into use.

Also the AB 350's have a wing issue delaying production.

Boeing has an issue now that its B787 engine lost parts in flight and this will delay deliveries.

I expect that with Jet Airways on an expansion surge announcing a need for 100 aircraft, TG may be able to transfer some of its purchase contracts as Jet wants the equipment now.

Airlines are replacing aircraft because they are not fuel-efficient, not because they are 'old'. The high price of aviation fuel is why Airbus and Boeing are making the new generation of planes lighter to help with reducing fuel costs. (It is also the reason why aircraft can't spend time going round and round if there are delays at their destinations - they don't carry unnecessary amounts of fuel - another weight-saving initiative)

It often seems strange that seemingly 'new' aircraft are got rid of.

All airlines aim for a low 'fleet age'.

Regarding the A380 (I've not heard them referred to as AB380 until now), airlines are keen to get the planes delivered as soon as possible. They are flagship aircraft - witness Malaysia, Korea, Singapore and Emirates etc.

Existing aircraft will require 'downtime', yes, but new aircraft incorporate additional checks into the normal service cycle.

I know Qatar Airways are holding back from wanting their aircraft built, but I believe everyone else just wants them ASAP.

BA have just got their first one in the building phase.

So - A380's, A350's, B787's etc are what airlines need to compete. Old aircraft are a liability for financial reasons, certainly not safety reasons, and that's without the type of aircraft which low-cost airlines use.

How old is John Travolta's plane?

The new aircraft also have greatly reduces maintainance requirements, so more hour in the air and a reduced maintainance budget and staff.

  11. Can't blame an airline for recognizing that it cannot afford new equipment. It seems to me that the previous CEO was intent on the equipment purchase that would taken on so much debt that the airline would have collapsed, Can there be any doubt now that the airline did the right thing in sacking him?

I think you have got the fact wrong.

Didn't mark said something that his blue eye boy had turn TG from a big looser to one of asian biggest money maker in the past 2 years, hence the sacking was unjust?

Unfortunately, the losses incurred are public knowledge as TG is traded on the SET. Khun Abhisit got it wrong, but then he was never known for his management capabilities.

    Well actually GK .............

Year over year, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited has seen their bottom line shrink from a gain of 14.7B to a loss of 10.2B despite an increase in revenues from 180.6B to 191.0B. An increase in the percentage of sales devoted to cost of goods sold from 76.84% to 83.80% was a key component in the falling bottom line in the face of rising revenues. http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/financials/financials.asp?ticker=THAI:TB

Thai airlines is increasing it market share and turnover. The plan to purchase new, high efficiency aircraft which have vastly improved running and maintainace costs would have decreased bottom line costs and therefore overall profits.

  13. When I look at my extended family up in Isaan and how much each if the aunts' and uncles' families own and spend, I think that they must exist on somewhere between 3,000 and 8,000 per month. They have the fields producing rice, tapioca or sugar cane for income and keep rice back if they grow it. There are the ugly but very tasty gai baans for food, vegetable patches and fruit trees. Trips to the market for occasional pork or buffalo but most likely for veggies.

To extend a tool of debt of 5 years income to them when they have never had the discipline of managing debt has unknown dangers which I hope never materialise.

Far better would be farming machinery, water management and education in better farming to bring the villages ahead. But keeping them poor and in debt seems to be the order of the day

I agree, increasing the debt burdon of the farmers isnt helping them, it would have been better to provide subsidies on fertilisers, seed grain ect or the supply of coin operated milling machines.
