  1. If you want to buy not so expensive wine but good go Chile and Argentina.

French wine suxx compared to Chile, Argentina, California, and Australian wine if you can't buy it for more than 1000 th (french wine that they sell 500thb in Thailand is the one that we pay 50thb in France).

    Cheers!

I agree totally that Chilean or Argentinean wines are very good and available at reasonable prices. I'd take any Chilean/Argentinean wine over any thai wine even if I didn't recognize the brand name. They taste much better and sell for comparable prices!

This discussion that wine prices here in Thailand are similar to those in North America is ridiculous since these postings would not generate so much interest if that were the case. "Lingnoi" is just trolling and apparently just trying to get a rise out of the thai visa regulars!

  2. Google for 'True Value Thailand' and you will find their website with product list and store locations.

Anyone who does any kind of home improvement or model making should be visiting their nearest True Value, they have so much stuff I have never seen anywhere else.

I went to visit True Value at K Village on Sukhumvit 26. Parking at night was hellish and the shopping complex is a real hi-so experience. Nice looking restaurants but be ready to pay up your nose prices... As for True Value, I found that particular outlet to be interesting but lacking the product variety that I expected from a True Value in the U.S. There were very few tools available and although there were a number of cleaning supplies such as Simple Green available, I'd say that the line of products being carried was quite expensive and repetitive in the sense that similar products are available in Thailand for cheaper prices(Igloos for a 6 pack went for 1600 baht). Minwax products were nowhere to be found...sorry to disappoint you Doc! The employee working there said the Pattaya shop does carry them but I would call first before going there. Their website is truevalue.co.th . The following are numbers of their outlets as follows:

Tiwanon 02-968-8600; Pattaya 038-33-2499; Chonburi 03876-5325; Phuket 07624-9504. Strangely, the package they gave me for the GooGone(290 baht) that I did buy did not have the Sukhumvit branch number. However, you can always call the Tiwanon number listed, or visit K Village itself. Happy Hunting!

  3. Grumpy, I've eaten BS's Mexican buffet, and kind of enjoyed it, and would go again.... But just not expect authentic preparations in some respects.... Just enjoy it for the bargain that it is. Tuesday nights... 295+ baht...

    post-53787-0-08595200-1298690432_thumb.j

BTW, Tacos and Salsa in their new location on Suk Soi 18 is also doing a Saturday buffet for 300 baht....

    post-53787-0-86342100-1298690747_thumb.j

And, Coyote used to have what I believe was a Monday night buffet of some kind as well.... I'm not sure if they still do.

Just went to T & S tonight. Food was good and prices were quite reasonable. (FYI, the Saturday buffet is now 400 baht). For those concerned about +++, there are taxes or service charges there at the present time. Very few of the items cost more than 250 baht and most of the combinations cost about 220 baht or so. The salads are big and quite inexpensive, the frijole soup my friend had was quite good and the burritos were generous in size. No one went away hungry, no one spent more than 350 baht for their food(not including drinks) and everyone had two items for that price.

Beer and alcohol prices seem to be a bit steep, even with happy hour prices though so if you are thirsty, you might have a couple elsewhere first. I remember the old T & S location had a 2 for 1 beer special, which I'm sure attracted more than a few people. However, the regular price of 100-120 bottle for a small bottle of beer is quite expensive.

Tacos & Salsa is at the very end of Suk 18....however, its not a very long soi and there are a number of interesting and attractive restaurants in that area. Just tell the motorcycle guys "bpai Mexican mai" and you get a free ride there anyhow. Its not a bustling area but it is quite pleasant. We all enjoyed the walk back to the main soi and of course, the food as well. None of my group had any complaints and that's saying a lot... my friend's thai gf and my thai wife were quite satisfied (which is saying a lot since she doesn't like Mexican food.) Try it, you'll like it!

  4. Index go home! IKEA will effectively be without competition. The other furniture stores in Thailand sells mostly overpriced crap. I can see Index have tried to copy the IKEA-concept in terms of store layout, designs, labeling etc., but they totally forgot about quality and pricing. If we'll see IKEA here with pricing similar to Singapore, this will be a total showstopper for the rest of the market. Love it

Yep Index sucks big time! I bought a number of items from their store in MBK just a few months ago. The paint off two of the tables have already peeled off. The particle board underneath can't handle even a bit of moisture before bloating up. My wife didn't believe me when I told her not to use damp sponges to wipe off the tables. Now the table tops are bloated from soaking up water from damp sponges. Of course not everything they sell is bad but be especially careful about buying their white finished shelves and tables.

  5. Gee, they burn down a shop house in Pattaya and it hits the headlines but when a whole block of townhouses worth tens of millions of baht, mysteriously burns down in Bangkok right next to the BTS station at Phrakhanong, no one gives a hoot. A few days later, the same area gets bulldozed in apparent preparation for another huge condominium development. So much for investigative reporting and followup! Amazing Thailand!

  6. Sorry for late reply since we've rarely launch to this website.

First of all, nobody want this happen. We do not know much in the residences' rooms, who and why and how they keep valuable thing in the rooms.

We are pleased to inform the truth which this residence have already known that after this residence told that they have lost money (that put in the socks in the wardrobe with amount of 200$ (at first told) / 2500$ (at second told)), the policeman came to the apartment to have an investigation. The police checked on our CCTV monitors (24 Cameras) and in residence's room with fingerprint! The policeman found no one go in to their room, some fingerprint in the money letter and every point in the wardrobe and in the room. Since this is very important evidence, so we send all of our maid staffs to have fingerprints at police station. At the first time, we send staffs to meet one policeman who responsible for it and miss that policeman. Then we arrange the meeting and send them all again. Finally, the policeman has all fingerprints and none of our maid staffs missed this investigation. Then during the police process on the steps of investigation, residence went to see him and came for talking to me for some complementaries many times. Since we haven't known the result of investigating yet, so we didn't give discount or other valuable things that the residence asked for, but promise that if it is true that our maid did that, the hotel will take responsibility for it. We also tried to help but can only give them safety box, make another door lock from outside when they leave the room and postpone the residence's payment due date to another month and let's the policeman do his job.

After few weeks, the police investigation has been done. And the result is that the fingerprint in the room WERE NOT MATCHED with the staffs'... We hope that they understand and so sorry for this lost that we don't know how and why.

Today this residence still stay here... and continue to stay here without moving out.

Amazing investigation results! The thief must have been a ghost...

  7. Just list it on craigslist.org and loads of people will call you to buy your things. If you don't want to bother with piece by piece sales, you can offer the whole lot for a set price. I'm sure that someone who just moved to Bkk will be interested.

  8. Try the Windsor Hotel on Suk 18/20. They have a Clark Hatch facility on the 14th floor with pretty decent free weights and some machine weights as well. Membership includes use of the swimming pool, which can be great during the hot Songkran season. You can sign up for 7500-8000 baht if you tell them you want the day membership, which allows you access if you enter before 5 pm. If that doesn't work for you, tell them you know Herb (old time member there) got his membership for that price. Just keep in mind that they are really looking for members there, so don't sign up unless you get a decent price.

  9. I was there on Sunday. Over an hour to get through immigration and then 671 Baht for 2 pints of beer and Pad Ka Pow Moo Kai Dow.

Food is definitely overpriced in the Food Court. Didn't realize how expensive it was until we went there on a trip to Chiang Mai recently. Most of the food prices start at 250 baht for the simplest item. Water prices at many places 100 baht except for Dunkin' Donuts and Burger King, which sold the water for 20 baht. Previously you could buy a sandwich at the magazine sundry store for less than 100 baht and drinks for 20-30 baht but the airport authorities apparently put a stop to that since there are no such food items there anymore. The solution is to stop in the 7-11 or the Family Mart prior to going inside. Of course, those shops probably will get shut down by the airport soon as well.

  10. There's one behind Carrefour on Rama IV Road, in the boutique shopping center off of Sukhumvit 26.

Thanks Mauiguy, Doc here formerly from Kona.

Will check it out. I'm up in BKK tomorrow from Hua Hin.

Hope they got what you want Doc. If there's none there, I heard IKEA is opening up in Bangna in a few months. Pretty sure they'll have what you need.

  11. Check out www.9apartment.com ,which is a thai-English website. Most of the apartments listed are very reasonable. Use their search function to find apartments that have rentals by the day, as well as those close to the MRT/BTS stations. Its not always the easiest website to use, but it has lots of apartments you won't find advertised elsewhere. Keep in mind that it is basically a thai website that also has English and not the other way around. Best of luck!

  12. In general, I agree with thaihome post above although there are a few apartments in the 5-8K baht range in Suk 36. Just walk down the subsois there. Most require at least a 3 to 6 month lease. Close to the BTS although some are pretty small. Upside is that there are lots of thai girls there. Some actually have real jobs! (Something you should consider yourself ...)

  13. Despite what others have said there are actually several places your friend can choose from.

    1) The best is probably Sitara Place by the Thai Cultural Center, which is fairly close to the MRT station and has tuk tuk service there. They charge about 18K per month. They have a website by that name or you can call Neil at 087-704-8950. If you look at the website, they have a Youtube video of the facilities.

    2) The SM Grande on Sukhumvit 4 (half a block before the IBIS hotel) is very nice and costs 20K baht per month but you need to reserve in advance. If available, you can pay a 3000 baht reservation fee. SM Grande 02-696-9000. Several friends have stayed there. The rooms are quite attractive.

3)There is a condo complex in Silom Soi 3 or 4 called the Oasis, in the soi just before Bangkok Bank. They rent studios in that price range. They have nice recreational facilities including a very large pool which is at least 25 M long. You can either google them or try this number 02-636-6323. My friend just stayed there this past month and paid 18K baht plus utilities (electricity, water, internet and cable all separately billed.)

    4) There is also a serviced apartment near Victory Monument in Soi Rangnam called Starry Place which has a web site by the same name. Their number is 02-246-4477. They have one bedrooms in that price range and is a 10 minute walk from the BTS station.

None of these places are perfect but they are all quite nice and compare well to most mid-range hotel rooms that would rent for much more. Of course, if your friend is really looking for trendy, he should consider staying in an upscale hotel like the Peninsula. In the future, this type of post should go into the Accommodations part of the Forum.

  14. There is a brand of thai honey called "5 Month Honey". It apparently comes in two varieties: one is from cultivated bees and the other from wild bees. You should be able to find the honey in OTOP shops around Thailand and possibly health foods stores such as Lemon Tree. Although the OTOP shops may be more expensive, I would think they would be less prone to using sugar water and the like. The alternative is buying honey off the street with the honeycombs still in the bottle.

  15. There's also a guy who sells Vietnamese coffee for 99 baht a bag. He advertises on craigslist. His name is Nick and you can contact him at 084664-0401. Nick lives in Ladprao but comes to Sukhumvit fairly often.

I've seen those ridiculous ads. The seller seems unwilling/unable/incapable of providing the most basic pricing information in his advertising. How much coffee is in a bag? Who knows? Who cares!

I suspect that if you bothered to call him, you would find out. As Forest Gump said, ------ is as -------- does....

  16. ..... Is it one rule for Farangs and obne rule for locals here ?

As far as I know it's not just any funny rule for farangs (I'm one, too).

It's forbidden by Thai law - valid for ALL people in Thailand. But this good law needs to be strictly enforced. Fine these few nudists before more and more beaches are occupied by topless or even naked Europeans (I am German), let them spend some hours with the police, let them inveign or bluster about Thailand, let them decide to spend their next holiday not here - and everything will be ok again.

It's not your bedroom, not your livingroom, not your home, not your country! It's Thailand - and all people visiting Thailand have to obey Thai law!

    I am not prude, no.

I am married, living here in Thailand without my wife and dating 2 women (not only to talk about beautiful Thai nature ... ;) ... ) and my post here has nothing to do with any religious morality. No.

My former German girlfriend used to go topless on European beaches - but before we decided to visit Thailand in 1994, we tried to read a bit about Thai culture. Easy to find that it's not common to go topless.

So - she was wearing a bikini! That's it! Easy and simple.

    maapaa

Watch out! The next thai law may outlaw adultery. Then we'll all be in trouble....

  17. There's an office supply store right opposite The Emporium (other side of Sukhumvit), I got a desk from there a couple of years ago and they had it in stock with delivery a day or two later.

That Office Depot store is no longer there. There is construction going on there and a new building is apparently coming up. Although I'm not a fan of Index, I do know that their showroom at Bangna Trad does have a lot of office desks which are inexpensive and apparently available in abundance.

  18. Its generally opened on the weekends only. Be careful what you purchase there. Lots of shysters there, especially when buying the larger items like refrigerators, tvs and the like. Will work for a short period then die a horrible death.

  19. Street food in general is prepared with palm oil. That's the stuff that can be used as an alternative energy source instead of gasoline. Read up on it and you will find out that food prepared with palm oil will clog your veins quickly. Whether you gain weight or not doesn't matter as much as your health. If you are going to eat fried thai food, at least make sure they are not using palm oil. Remember that its cheap for a reason. Healthy food costs money....

  20. There's a big sign on several of the BTS stations written in thai saying that the stations will open in August of next year, 2011. The reason given to the press was as written above. Seeing the number of overpriced and undersold condos in the area around On Nuut, there may be other reasons why the BTS extension stations are beginning to look weather beaten, if not old, before they are opened. Things may take awhile to do in Thailand, but it doesn't take a year and a half to install circuitry.
