What is more important is to continue learning Thai language than creating perfect alphabetic phonetic symbol system.

The alphabetic phonetic symbol system is one of the various means to help us learn Thai language smoothly.

Actually Thai students don’t use alphabetic phonetic symbol system in their schools.

Thank you very much for your precious comment on the issue.

The slight discrepancy is caused by the difference between alphabetic phonetic symbols to be used in Japan and that one internationally used like yours.

In Japan, we use k for non-aspirated sound and kh for aspirated sound, whereas you use g for non-aspirated sound and k for aspirated sound.

As for glottal stops to be used at the bottom of the word, we use k for non-aspirated sound (unvoiced, but Thai people can identify the sound).

What gives me difficulty in learning Thai language is that there are 9 basic vowel sounds in Thai language besides 5 tones. (Only 5 in Japanese i.e. a i u e o )

Here is a list of Thai vowels. (phonetic sound by roman alphabet)

a for aｒｔ

i for beat

u for look

u(i) for hmm (not accurately, no equivalent sound for this pronunciation in English)

e for leg

e(a) for chat

o for cone

o(a) for pot

a(*) for bird

If I would like to show pronunciation of Thai words accurately, I need to have phonetic symbols listed below.

u(i), e(a), o(a), a(*)

As much as I know, only the font namely Arial Unicode Ms is able to give us the relevant characters from the font table.

My suffering with regard to the matter continues.

Thank you very much for your comment on the issue.

Those symbols are not easy to input like ordinary characters on your keyboard.

You have to use soft-keyboard specially created or, in my case, I use my users dictionary for phonetic symbols in the Japanese IME.

As windows xp of any countries version has the Japanese IME, using users dictionary of the Japanese IME may be the easiest solution.

To obtain correct pronunciations of Thai words, using those phonetic symbols is one of the best way to follow, I believe.

By the way, Thai people don’t use alphabetic phonetic symbols. They use Thai letters for phonetic sound as well.

Here are some samples.

บรรพบุรุษ อ่านว่า บัน-พะ-บุ-หรุด ban(flat) pha(high) bu(low) rut(low)

สร้างสรรค์ อ่านว่า ส้าง-สัน saang(falling) san(rising)

I think khun yoot mentioned sometime long ago that he is feeding his Thai script into www.thai2english.com, and then receives a phonetic (romanized) version back. At thai2english.com you can choose which transcription style you like.

I had been very busy from the end of the last year to the beginning of New Year to attend many parties. If you use windows xp English version, Japanese front-end processor (IME) is attached to the program, so it is very simple to make a copy of my user dictionary into your Pc’s IME. This IME is written in English so you won’t have any problem. One thing I would like to point out is that it must be with ms-excel or ms-words to write in Thai language together with Thai font such as Cordia New etc.

There is no completion date for my user dictionary because it evolves day by day slowly. I will upload my user dictionary to thaivisa forum. If you might be in a hurry, please send me e-mail ([email protected]) so I can send you the user dictionary as an attachment.

カイちゃんとスウェンセンでアイスクリームを食べる。

昨日の日曜日はは午前中家事に専念していたが、午後身体がだるくてそのままベッドで３時間眠ってしまった。ちょうど目がさめたところで、カイちゃんがスウェンセンでアイスクリームを食べたがったので、車を運転してフェアリープラザまで連れて行った。スウェンセンではカイちゃんはアイスクリームはあまり食べずに、ホイップした生クリームを一生懸命に食べていた。カイちゃんが食べ物をこんなに熱心に食べるのはまれである。父親はカイちゃんがこんなに嬉しそうにホイップした生クリームを食べるところを見て、妙に感動してしまった。

Going to Swensens for ice-cream

During the morning time of yesterday, Sunday, I concentrated to the house keeping work but in the afternoon, I felt very tired and slept on the bed for 3 hours. When I just woke up, Kai-chan insisted to go to Swensens for ice-cream so I drove to Fairly Plaza with Kai-chan. At Swensens, Kai-chan didn’t eat ice-cream much but she ate whipped fresh cream much. I haven’t seen that Kai-chan is eager to eat something. Scenery of Kai-chan eating whipped fresh cream eagerly moves the father.

Father had got fever in the midnight.

I’ve submitted the birth registration for Siifaa-chan at the embassy of Japan in BKK, but I must admit that the schedule for traveling to BKK is too tight, having made the father very tired.

In the midnight, father had got fever but father hasn’t confessed to the family that I’d got fever.

While I was watching the seeping faces of the family, I took an antifebrile quietly and the fever had gone immediately.

At the moment, I cannot be fallen dawn.

I have to borrow the expression, which was created by a former professional wrestler “Animal Hamaguchi”.

妻は虫垂炎の手術後９日目になり回復は順調であるが、まだまだ本調子ではない。私は昨日バンコクの日本大使館でシーファーちゃんの日本側への出生届けを行ったので、朝から夕方まで家事は妻がこなしていた。たくさん家事をやったのでお腹が痛むと言っていた。コーンケーンからバンコクまでは距離にして５００キロ、エアコンバスで６時間かかる。バンコクで寿司や刺身を食べる時間も全く無く、完全なトンボ帰りであった。妻に負担をかけたくなかったからだ。シーファーちゃんの出生届けも無事受理され、晴れて日本人の仲間入りをすることができた。シーファーちゃんの日本名は『愛子』にした。ちなみに次女カイちゃんの日本名は『千代子』である。

今日も掃除、洗濯、アイロンかけと仕事は多い。

頑張れお父さん。

Nine days already have passed since my wife got the operation of appendicitis but she has not recovered totally yet.

As I went to the Japanese embassy in BKK to submit birth registration of Siifaa-chan, my wife had to work for house keeping work all the daylong.

She was complaining that she had pain in the abdominal region, since she's got to do much for house keeping work.

It is about 500km from KKC to BKK, takes 6 hours by a/c bus service.

I had no time to taste sushi and sashimi in BKK and got back home immediately.

I didn't want to give my wife unnecessary burden for house keeping work.

Birth registration of Siifaa-chan was duly accepted by the Japanese embassy to enable her being a Japanese citizen.

Japanese name of Siifaa-chan is Aiko, which was chosen by me.

As for Kai-chan, she has a Japanese name Chiyoko.

I have much house keeping work today such as cleaning rooms, washing clothes, ironing clothes, etc.

Just hang on, Papa.

Hi all:

I arrived in BKK early in this morning by a/c bus to visit the Japanese Embassy for registration of the Japanese citizenship for Siifaa-chan.

The Japanese embassy is located in Thanon Wittayu just in front of Rumpini Park. It is not opened yet. While I'm waiting for opening of the embassy, I can have time to post this from internet cafe just adjacent to the embassy.
