A friend of mine who is moving to Thailand from Belgium and bringing a zodiac with him, asked me if you need a yachting permit to sail around with a motorised Zodiac.

I posted asking about this in the Tattoos topic but have not, as yet, had a response. I figure this could be because not many people check it because you guys get 100s of people asked for the same name to be translated

The name I would like translated is 'Nils'. I started looking around on some Thai Language websites to see if I could have a crack at it myself but there are so many rules that I can't get my head around. Also, even on very simple searches I couldn't seem to find a character(s) for the sound 'i' as in 'spill' or 'drill' rather a longer 'eye' type sound.

I don't know if this sound even exists in the Thai language but if anyone could help with something similar I'd be incredibly grateful

The problem with Nils is the l and the s at the end of the name you can just translitterate these letters to thai letters but following the thai system the l at the end of a word would be read as a "n" and the "s" as a "t" so if a thai would read it it would come out as something completely different.

So I am affraid that this name is almost impossible to write correct in Thai.

The short i sound you are having problems with is quite simple the first part of the name Ni is นิ but as I said the l and the s would be ล and ส but together นิลส can not be read in Thai

The house registration is one of the most important papers in Thailand I suppose she also still has her birthcertificate?

She never looses her Thai Nationality if she wants to go back to Thailand to live the best thing is to arrange her papers in the States through the embassy. She could also travel to Thailand on her American passport and do the paperwork in Thailand but then she will have to leave Thailand again and re-enter on her Thai passport.

She could also get a yearly extension and stay on her American passport but then she needs to go to immigration every 3 months to extend her visa.

I think t would take about one month to arrange a new Thai passport for her in the Thai embassy this would be the simplest way

What is wrong with the car? Why do you need to rebuild the engine? It doesn't sound that old.

I also have an Isuzu D-max of 2006 and it sometimes refuses to start you hear a click when you turn the ignition but nothing happens.

The battery is ok because you hear the click every time but it sounds like the starting motor is refusing to turn because something is stuck in there.

I don't know how the starting motor works on this engine that is why I am looking for a repair manual too.

I am an engineer on big marine engines and I have had experience with generator engines with a helix type starting motor where the Helix gets stuck and doesn't engage in the gear of the flywheel so it won't start either.

After trying to start a few times suddenly the engine does start and then there is no problem any more for a few days but the problem always comes back.

It 'seems' to be used as a conversation terminator, as we would use "Cheers" or "So-long" or "Catch you later" in English.

A definition and transcription (for pronounciation purposes) would be really useful as I'm hearing it multiple times each day, and can't get my head around it. Is it used only between certain groups of people, eg friends but not strangers, etc? Can it be broken down into smaller, meaningful words?

Better would be

Sorn hai khun dtok pla dee kwa ao pla hai khao.

Tok bet not bek can also be used but I think it is not so polite and it is more Lao dialect

So why can't I get an extension of stay from Pattaya immigration?

I have a multiple entry non O visa for one year based on mariage with a Thai citizen and I work abroad so I stay 6 weeks in Thailand and go 6 weeks to wherever my ship is working at that moment.

But Pattaya immigration doesn't want to give me a year extension of my visa because they say I go abroad enough so I can get a visa from a embassy of another country

I thought the money requirement and medical was only for the visa extension in Thailand.

I can't speak for England but I am Belgian and in Belgium you only need a recent marriage certficate to get a 1 year non-immigrant O.

And ofcourse a passport with 18 months validity, 2 completed visa forms and 3 pictures.

The process takes 3 working days and can be done at the consulate in Antwerp or in the embassy in Brussels

Tourist visa's need to be used before 3 months and will be valid for the stated length.

But I'm affraid your wife is right a non'O' immigrant is valid from the day of issue so apply as late as possible for the maximum time.

sort them out at the local Amphur office.

As long as you can show a combined income to 40K a month you will get the one year extension.

I am living in Thailand with my wife and daughters since 1 year on a multiple entry non-O immigrant visa.

But I cannot get the extension because I work abroad on a 6 weeks on 6 weeks off schedule.

Immigration in Jomtien says I am more than enough abroad to get a new visa from an embassy abroad.

So I got my second visa 2 weeks ago but I would prefer to get an extension because it is very dificult to get a visa for me because I am working offshore and can't get to an embassy during my working period.

Here the rates go from 250 to 500 B/hour. There's one school that charges 800B/h, but I think they are still waiting for their first farang student. I don't live in rural area, but also not in BKK.

It helps if your teacher:

- has a very nice pronunciation (R instead of L when necessary)

- is not shy

- has experience with teaching farang (so she'll not be annoyed when the student asks questions)

- can speak a bit English

- remembers and can explain the formal grammar rules of Thai language (most Thai people can't explain the tone rules)

- has ever read a book that a farang would use to study Thai

Is there a university nearby?

You could try to look for a student that is willing to teach Thai (via a message board of the university).

Most teachers have never taught a farang, nor do they quality for one of the points above, so a normal student might be just as good or even be better than a teacher.

Don't pay for many hours in advance.

Then I don't have a bad deal.

I am paying 150 baht /hour per person for me and my daughter in a small private school which mostly caters to children from the nearby school (Udom Suksa in Pattaya) who come there to get some assistance with their home work.

The teacher doesn't speak any English but that is no problem as I am fluent enough in spoken Thai to be able to communicate with her the main reason why I follow the lessons is to learn to read and write.

Has anyone experienced any problems attempting to open a bank account in one name,(Aus) as i remember last year i spoke to a guy in Thailand,who had dramas attempting to open such account? He told me he had Aus driver lic,credit cards,etc..and would you believe an Australian passport? and still had problems. I cant remember how he got on. Can anyone enlighten me re this.

There have been plenty of postings regarding this topic. It seems a case of if you at first don't succeed, try, try again.....at various banks. Bear in mind that all retirees who are out here on one year extentions using the 800,000baht in the bank option have accounts in just their name. There have also been cases reported where even holiday makers have been able to open bank accounts here in Thailand with just a tourist visa.

Officially you need a form by the immigration office of the place you live stating that you have your official residency in Thailand.

But not all banks enforce this rule.

Like mentioned in the previous post just shop arround and you will find a bank where they will help you even without the immigrations certificate.

The spouse and the child then get their extensions based on the parents work permit and extesnion of stay towards the end of the first 3 month stint in Thailand.

Embassy in Belgium said I had to get a Visa for my daughter to stay in Thailand more than 6 months so I did that the first time.

But in Thailand the immigration officer at the airport told me I shouldn't have bothered because as mentioned before there is no fine for overstay for children under 15.

So the next years I didn't do this anymore and we didn't have any problems.

I currently have multiple non 0 visa which was issued in Sept. last year. However, i iwill be back in Uk in July and want to have new visa issued. I think the old one can be cancelled an a new one issued in its place - is this correct?

You don't need to cancel the old visa, just apply for a new one and use it instead. I've had overlapping visas, you need to point out the new one to immigration however.

It is better to have 2 visas than none. You can always re-enter Thailand with the old visa, but as a matter of fact it does not change anything at all.

I just applied for a new visa last week while the other was still valid for 2 months the consul in Antwerp Belgium cancelled the existing visa before giving me the new one

Does anyone know if this word cn be used in a derogatory term - มัย - meaning horse or mule?

I know 'kwai' - buffalo can be used in a bad way but can this word also be used in a derogatory way?

Horse is ม้า is not used as a derogatory form but หมา meaning dog is.

I didn't know the word มัย but looked it up and in the dictionary there was no reference to a derogatory meaning.

I also never heard it being used as such

If you are writing in roman characters you can hardly speak of correct spelling this depends on your personal interpretation and what your mothertongue is (in my mothertongue it would be saamie).

Samee or สามี means husband

If one wants to extend a retirement visa based on a monthly revenue rather than the lump sum of 800,000 Baht, what is the procedure and what do they require .....? I am Canadian .... Is it the same for all nationalities....? Can my Consulate help in this matter ...?Any Canadians out there doing the retirement visa based on monthly income rather than lumps sum...? It is very strenuous to get this lump sum together every year ,,....

2 months ago I went to the immigration at Jomtien to get an adres certificate for my insurance company and i asked some info about this.

The lady who gave me the certificate said that the law had changed and that the Lumpsum was not acceptable anymore.

The only thing that was acceptable was a statement from your embassy that your monthly income was more then 65000 baht for a single and 45000 for a man married to a Thai citizen.

I have not heard this anywhere else and found it a bit strange because if this were true I think there would have been an uproar of comments because I think there are al ot of retirees who cannot proof their income but have more than enough money to deposit a lumpsum.

And what was even more alarming for me was that I was told I could not get an extension of my visa because I work outside the country on a 6-6 weekly schedule.

As I am often out of the country I should get my visa from abroad.

Because i work on a ship this is a real problem for me there are no embassy's or consulates on board of ships so this means once a year I need to stay abraod somewhere during my holliday long enough to apply for a non-O visa.

Anyone else here working abroad living in Thailand with the same problem?
