I have said multiple times on this thread there are many individual factors involved.

I must say that your mention of discipline implies that you believe in the Calvinistic morality game of blaming failures on lack of will power. I think that's bunk. Failures are because what people are doing is simply not sustainable for the long term. Finding individual programs that both work and are sustainable is the trick. A very difficult trick.

Ok, back to the beginning... It's simple physics. Do not consume more calories than your body burns and you contribute through exercise. Do eat whatever you want and whenever you want it but do not eat more than you burn. Do not count calories on a daily but on a weekly basis, that's good enough. Count calories, be aware what you eat. You'll get some insights over time what's killing your limits and whatnot. You will begin to realize that some stuff just "killed your dinner". You realize the calorie impact of wine and beer and learn to choose between booze or nice stuff to eat. Unfortunately you can have both on very few days only unless you are on a daily 90 minutes vigorous exercise streak.

Eating is more than adding energy to your body. Limiting consumption time or variety doesn't work for the most. If someone invites me for breakfast I go because I eat at any time of the day. I can go virtually anywhere as I do not limit carbs or other groups of food.  For me eating is a societal exercise and always will be.

But I learned "calories" over the years, I know how much I eat for most food. I have an idea how much rice/meat/sauce they put on my plate (and sometimes do no eat all). I try to limit meals to no more than 500-600 calories. I wait approx 20 minutes after a portion to see if my body is still hungry. I exercise for 500 cals a day.

I never cut chocolate, cake or other sweets out but I learned only to eat them to the point where I could still have breakfast, lunch and dinner. (I cut heavily on softdrinks & beer though as they virtually ruin any effort)

Result: I keep my weight in a healthy range, if I need to reduce I cut down to 1500 cals a day (~10000 a week) = 1 KG down every 20 days and let it go as long as it takes. At least it does not interfere with social life than being allowed to consume in heavily restricted times of the day.

  2.

I'm sure all the affected hotels have raised their rates to offset the decline in guests. 'Thainess'

Last year we had some friends stay in a hotel in the middle of Chiang Mai at a cost of THB1250 in mid September.

Out of curiosity I just checked the prices for the same period this year.

    THB2400!

My hotel in BKK (Thai owned and managed) charges 2450 THB instead of 1950 THB but last time booking was in March and now the bookings are in Dec/Jan and very close to X-mas and new year so I feel that the 500 THB top up is rather seasonal and still reasonable.

  3. I have had many dealings with hotels and service providers in Ao Nang, and its 100 percent true it has always relied on it high season and its astronomical peak season prices (Scandinavian clients) Its not unusual for high season prices to be 5x more than off season.

Just imagine trying to cost group tours on a yearly basis when regardless of giving them customers in low season they do this this,it becomes unworkable!

Sadly as stated many resorts are left to in experienced staff during this  low season time, maintenance well ......

Maybe it's time to change your business partners then. I have experienced always a difference of ~25% between low (June-Oct) and high (Dec-Feb) season at good 4 star properties in Ao Nang.

  4. ..such a thing would set Thailand back 30 years. Disastrous proposal.

You are right. To believe that a statement is more trustworthy when done it front of a famous Buddha statue is hilarious and the country should move forward and leave this superstitious nonsense behind. Just out of interest, how did you come up with 30 years? Is there a way to calculate such things accurate?

  5. I believe it works like this...

Most visas issued by the German embassy in BKK are multiple, so you can enter several times. But the length (for tourist purposes) depends on the insurance you have handed in while applying for it. They usually grant a visa for the period covered by the insurance. I've see dozens of visas only for a specific number of days and I also know a lot of Thais that were not willing to pay an extra 100-200 THB to get a few more days extra coverage in case you have to extend your trip for what reason ever. And yes, they are strict in Germany and do not allow re-entry or do not extend if you don't have the mandatory coverage that covers the bill in case of damages to yourself or others.

A night in transit isn't nice but it's not really a hardship one can't bear for a few hours. And to all the complainers here... Isn't what the Germans did exactly what you are asking for in almost every topice here on TV. "Stick to the rules that are in place and no double standards" or whatever you call it?

  6. I have dozens of pomelo and grapefruit trees, but until they're ready to bear (in about 6 weeks, thanks), I buy limes. Yes, they are going up in price. As a trade-off, the hill tribe lady I buy limes from, is really cute.

I need to plant some more lime trees. The 3 I have now, are in crappy soil.

That's probably more info than you care to hear, sorry.

Incidentally, why are there no grapefruit trees in Thailand, except at my 2 properties in Chiang Rai?

I think the answer is: Thais like everything either very sweet or very 'pet' (spicy) or bland (rice). Grapefruit are somewhere between, so are considered too preeo (sour) for the Thai palate. Actually, the real reason is; Thais who haven't traveled overseas, have never tasted grapefruit.

Similarly, all but a few Thais don't like avocado, but that's because they think they're too strange tasting. Burmese like 'em though.

I guess the real reason is... Who needs grapefruits when there is plenty of pomelo available all year long. Yum Yum :-)

  7. Once again you are completely WRONG and it seems you do not know the rules of driving. EVERY maneuver in driving hinders other traffic in some way. Just having another car on the road at the same time is a potential hazard, this is why there are strict rules for keeping SAFE DISTANCE. If the bike was not at a safe distance and has not given itself thinking time then any maneuver exercised from any vehicle in front is potentially hazardous. Let us make a simple example from this. Forget about the car for one min. What if the driver of the bike was so close, he then went and exercised an overtaking maneuver with the car, then he got run down by oncoming traffic! whose at fault now? The Russian in the car for indicating to turn? Na i don't think so my friend, you are miles and miles out!!!!

Don't confuse the issue with imaginary things.

The guy on the motorbike was overtaking her when she executed an u-turn. So she is at fault.

    Reason for edit...

Had a look at the road and what I wrote does not apply. Still... from 10 yrs driving in LOS I have the strong feeling that the motorbike boy *#ed it up for good while trying to squeeze through the eye of a needle on the right hand side of the car ( where no traffic is supposed to be on a road with the design Patak Rd. has ). But even if it is found that the boy is a fault you have to consider the one golden rule in traffic regardless of whos fault it was:

Farang killed by a Thai: Mai bpen rai.

Farang kills a Thai: Basically exactly the opposite of Mai bpen rai.

  8. In Thailand ( and Cambodia, Vietnam, Eastern Malaysia )you will find a room for around 2000 THB that will cost you an arm and a leg in Europe or the States. You get a certain level of luxury you couldn't afford at home. That's what this story is about. 500 - 1000 THB might be ok for a few nights but I want great and not ok for the rare days of a year I have precious private time. I am glad that I can get this in TH for a fraction of the price I would pay in Spain, France or Italy.

  9. Time for the voters to challenge the lie that the Suthepistas are 'non-violent'. Stopping people who are merely doing their civic duty is violence - against the individual and civil society.

Take videos and immediately upload them to an online server for security.

Some people have weird definitions of violence.

    Sent from my phone ...

"an unjust or unwarranted exertion of force or power, as against rights or laws: to take over a government by violence."

Not "weird" Focus27 is correct. Look it up.

    I looked it up.

    vi·o.lence
    ˈvī(ə)ləns
    noun
    1. behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something.
Stopping people from voting by standing around the gates is not violence.

Yes it is... "Violence - the unlawful exercise of physical force or intimidation by the exhibition of such force"

  10. a dog by any other name is still a dog, it doesn't become a horse because it sleeps in a stable

A pommie by any other name is still an pommie, he doesn't become a valuable member of society because he stays in another country. Do you get the idea how wrong this sentence is?

You got to be kidding me? An aussie sausage jockey talking about valuable members of society? When you've done your time, no doubt you'll be able to return. In the meantime, enjoy yourself

You did not get the idea :-)

  11. So the hint is out.

This 'convenient' leak has hit the street.

    The tongues are wagging.

This is a nice little discreet shot across the bows for YL and the PTP.

'It's your move'.... we suggest you take this opportunity to step down and say it is in the people's interests to stop the protests... I am doing this for Thailand'... That's it... there's a good girl, now you look good in defeat. Just the PTP to follow suit, then it's time for the overhaul.

Well done Suthep, I knew you were cunning from the start. I take my hat off to you.

    You win.

Sorry but you know nothing... this is anything but over and certainly not a win. It's a loss for the people of this country, one of many since 2006 and beyond.
