  1. I don't know what a hob is but I bought a small gas oven with 3 burner stove which is plenty for what you described. I have baked chickens, turkey, ribs, bread, and many other things. We bought it downtown at a place called Seerung or something like that. It is across from Tourism offiice on the left side of the street heading down to the river. Its an electronics shop but mostly air conditioning, refrigerators, stoves, ovens, kitchen appliances, water coolers and a few TV and audio items. Give it a try I think you will find what you are looking for.

  2. I have often stayed at Rajapruk Hotel. It is close to the bus station. If you head back towards town just passed Big C from the bus station it is right at the T intersection. I think it is around 1000 per night and includes buffet breakfast. You could walk to the bus depot in 15 minutes or 2 minutes by taxi.

  3. I used the AEON ATM and at the machine there was no alert regarding a 150 Baht fee and asking if I want to proceed. However looking at my bank statement there was a charge for non-bank card withdrawal. So it seems they do charge just don't let you know up front.

  4. Bergen,

That is great news. It would be nice not to have to contribute every time I withdraw funds, especially since i do so on both ends. Do they have a withdrawal cap? I will check it out next time. Thanks for the input.

  5. AA deleted the ubn-bkk morning flight from their website now.

I read yesterday that Thai Smile Airways, another low cost subsidiary of Thai Airways International will be flying the Ubn-bkk route beginning next July. I think AA is just being smart and focusing on profitable routes.

AA was also good as it was after the rush hour and with the new City Line you can get to town in 30 minutes and 1/6 the cost of a taxi. AA was nice as could fly round trip for a one way fare on Thai Air.

  6. Grendel, that is about right 7-8 hours Ubon to Udon by bus. Only 2 routes and they both stop often. Mostly at bus terminals but also stop along the way to drop off and pick up fares along the road. You can go through Khon Kaen or up through Sakon Nakorn.

One option might be Nakorn Chai Air to Korat then take a more or less express from Korat to Udon.

  7. Do a search for Nevada Complex. When you click on the link you will be taken to a general page for all Nevada Complexes. Look to the left hand side bar and click on Nevada Ubon. When you reach that page look in the left sidebar again for movies for Nevada Ubon and you will get the information you need.

  8. TheQuick7,

If you are in Ayutthaya you can catch the express around 630-7am to Ubon, arrive a bit after 2pm. The next morning early, go to the Ubon Bus Terminal. Sahamit Tours has a bus around 5am to Sakhorn Nakon and stops in Mukdahan. You will have time to eat breakfast then catch the Mukdahan Savanakhet bus from the terminal across Freedom Bridge 2. It will take you to Savanakhet bus terminal. There will be tuk tuks that can take you to the Thai consulate. It is on the northern outskirts of town near the river.

Last time I was there if you turn in paperwork one morning you get your passport back after 2pm the following day. But things change so cannot confirm this as current.

You can also catch a bus from your location to Mukdahan and catch the bus across the river at the terminal.

Savannakhet is a quiet laid back town. Nice place to spend a couple of days.

  9. There are 3 other hotels in Ubon with rooms under 1700 that have pools.

    Ubon Buri Hotel & Resort:

    Pros: Clean rooms, swimming pool

Cons: It is away from the beaten path on the outskirts of town on the way to Warin. But if you have a car

    it should be no problem.

    Ubon International Hotel:

Pros: Centrally located, access to public transportation, swimming pool, selection of restaurants.

Cons: The rooms aren't the nicest or best kept in town.

    Laithong Hotel

Pros: Access to public transportation, nice restaurant, swimming pool

Cons: rooms could use some attention

  10. James,

    Impossible Mission maybe.

I also have large size feet and have experienced the same challenge. In over 9 years living in Ubon I have yet to find a pair of shoes here that fit my feet. I do try from time to time but always get my foot squeezed into a size too small. I have been purchasing my shoes in Bangkok. I have not tried to newly opened Sports World at City Mall. I see they do have a good selection but the problem has always been the size.

Compaq is not seen too much in Thailand. I haven't seen a Compaq dealer here. I would suggest go to Ubon Com World on Khuang Thani Rd across from TAT or a shop on Phalochai Rd just west of Upparat. I don't think they have in stock but should be able to order from Bangkok. There is a small shop just north of Wrong Way Cafe that does business in used laptops. They refurbish so might have batteries or a contact to order for you.

Another suggestion for shoes is to try Amazon. They have a shoes and accessories website you can order from. I have ordered mostly books for Amazon and have never had any problems getting the items safely delivered to Ubon.

    Good luck.

  11. Jen,

You might try Miss Ooh at English Center in Ubon. The shop is located on Rajabut Rd just south (towards) the river from Khuan Thani Rd. The shop is on the left hand side. She teaches English to Thais and Thai to foreigners. It might be worth your time to go by and have a chat with her.

  12. If you are staying at Sunee, just head north on Chayangkul Rd. Turn left, west at the junction with 231. Go passed the Main Bus Terminal maybe 1 kilometer or so not far from the next junction, and you will see Tawan Daeng Ubon on the left hand side. It sits back from 231 a bit but there is a large tall sign close enough to see well

  13. I would have to concur that Sunee Grand Hotel might be the best family hotel. They have jr suites that have connecting rooms so you can keep your family close.

I would recommend asking for rooms on the north side of the hotel. They often have events in the courtyard between City Mall and the hotel. These events include loud music that echoes up from the stage.

  14. Patriot,

Yes they are ceasing flights to Ubon on February 5, 2010. Their reasons are questionable but will do it anyway. I think it is because of the competition. You can fly Air Asia round trip for less than a one way ticket on Thai Airways. The routes will be replaced by Nok Air, a subsidiary of Thai Airways. Their fares are much more competitive with Air Asia. The downside of Nok Air is that it is still based at Don Muang. That is fine if just going to Bkk and back and good for them if you are going elsewhere in Thailand that is serviced by Nok.

  15. It is a time of transition in Ubon as far as natural attractions goes. The monsoon season provides us with the amazing waterfalls and the hot season reveals natures's artwork at the waters recede. Most of the waterfalls have little or no water falling now. Sam Pan Bok, mentioned in a post above is an interesting visit but it is still covered in water. Is is well north of Khong Jiam along the Mekhong.

A place to visit is Pha Taem in Khong Jiam district. There is an interesting 3km hike high above the banks of the Mekhong. It offers archeological drawings and a panoramic view. Some of the movie Alexander with Colin Ferrel were filmed on location there. Also in Khong Jiam is where the Mun and Mekhong rivers meet. There are several interesting temples in the area as well. Gaeng Saphue in Phibun Mangsahan though the river is still high is a good place for a relaxing scenic picnic lunch.

In the south east there is the Emerald Triangle but last I heard it was closed to the public due to tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

In and around Ubon City are several notable temples. Wat Nong Pa Phong, Wat Pa Nana Chat (forest temple mainly for foreigners), Wat Nong Bua has unique and quite distinctive architecture. Wat Sa Prasan Suk is also interesting.

There are several decent hotels in Ubon under 1000 baht per night, Nevada Inn, mentioned above, is clean, comfortable and convenient. A downfall might be it is located on Nevada complex and surrounded by restaurants, pub, disco, shopping, and theater so it might get noisy sometimes. Sri Isan also under 1000 is down by the river and Big Market.

    Hope this helps.

  16. and where was Takiang located?? :)

That would be Ban Ta Kiang, it is located on Uppalian Rd, just passed the road to the airport. It is on the left hand side maybe a hundred meters or so before you get to Ali's restaurant. It has been there since before I first came to Ubon. Features Thai country music or songs of life as it is sometimes called.

  17. I have used the female dentist at Rajavej for the last 3 years. :D

She speaks English, are very efficient, and always explains in what way she's going to torture me :)

She has always been on time for my appointments, and I'm almost looking forward to the next one. :D (which is on Friday)

I have used the one at Rajavej as well. She is now on maternity leave for a few weeks. Here you can go during normal business hours 9-4 monday to friday. I have also used the clinic across from Robinson. This is also a female dentist and speaks english as well. Her clinic is open evenings and weekends.
