  1. Well, anyone who speaks Thai or has a Thai wife needs to watch this!! If your wife watches it, get the kleenex ready!

    Watch This!

(can anyone tell me how to embed youtube videos on this site?)

My wife, MIL, sisters etc, just watched it and all burst into sobbing tears. It is above politics and shows the real feelings of the normal Thai person as to what is happening in this country right now.

If anyone can give a better translation please do, but what I picked up was this. The guy picks up an award at a Thai TV awards show, and during the speech says something along the following lines. "This 'house' used to have lots of fighting, the family were never happy and fought about everything. Then along came our Father, he worked so hard to build a beautiful new 'House' for us, where we could all be happy and live together. As a young boy, I grew up in such a happy house and my Father loved us all and we all loved him so dearly. Now some members of our family are fighting for someone else and want to destroy our 'house', and hurt our Father and even take him away. Why? If you don't love our Father anymore, then just leave our House and let us be happy once again with him, we love him and we would all die for him"

All very emotional and a standing ovation. It is flying around the Thai social networking sites at the speed of light. If this is broadcast to the 'normal' red protestors they will all go home within 20 minutes of watching it.

Please explain how Abhisit is Thailand's father?

Are you just pretending to be stupid? or are you really stupid?

This is about Abhisit stepping down and calling for new elections. And meaning it, not just telling people to guess the date of the House dissolution. Because without an exact date of a House dissolution, you cannot have an exact date for an election. But only smart people understand how it works. The stupid people just saw Abhisit saying "elections will be held on November 14th".

Now, back to the issue. This is about Abhisit, nobody else. So it being about Abhisit, care to explain how Abhisit is Thailand's father?

there's only one Father of all Thai, and it isn't Abhisit, see? Nor Thaksin.

  2. Din Daeng gone red again.

Udon Thani Town Hall under seige.

Convoys of Reds blocked from entering Bangkok about to get feisty!

Sure they got this contained at Rajprasong?

As much as I hate to do this, as it might be considered feeding the troll, would you kindly provide links for the first three lines? Because I have not seen any evidence of any of these on the media.

Not my fault my friend. some of them even appeared on here in the closed thread! some on a more reputable BANGKOK based english newspapers front page as well.

is ignorance bliss? Or do you get your wife to only let you see what will be palatable to you?

Oddly enough, I read all the closed threads very carefully. None appeared there.

I checked your suggestion about the BKK newspaper. It says the reds occupy one intersection in Din Daeng. One intersection does not a Din Daeng make.

Called a friend in Udon Thani. Very quiet.

My wife is a very competent, educated woman who has a mind of her own, thank you very much. She's the one with the friend in Udon Thani.

Ignorance may be bliss, but spreading of misinformation/disinformation is a violation of forum rules.

So, if you have links, post them. If not, you are nothing but a troll, and go on the ignore list.

Note to mods and admins: Thanks for having an ignore list available to us!

and another troll moves to the ignore list; don't worry, you'll be in good company :) Russel, Jerry, Pornstasi, to name only a few. List still growing :D Thanks to the mods indeed for this wonderful feature. I highly recommend it; it keeps the threads readable, not having to wade through pages of drivel.

  3. update on TAN:

CORRECTION: CRES to Surround Red-shirts This Evening, Live Bullets to Be Used

    UPDATE : 13 May 2010

The Center for Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) has announced that to encourage the protesters to disperse armored vehicles will be used to surround the anti-government red-shirt protesters this evening. Live bullets will be used.

    :)
  4. "BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva Sunday named suspended Army specialist Maj Gen Khattiya Sawasdiphol as the mastermind and chief terrorist who tried to undermine the road map to bring about political reconciliation."

Did I miss something? The PM names him as a terrorist but list no specific acts of terrorism. What is he referring too? The attacks on the police? The bombs on Silom?

I have no idea Khattiya committed terrorism, maybe he did, but if he did, why not indite him on those acts? Seems a bit backwards to me just to call someone a terrorist without specifically charging him or at least saying exactly what he did.

Like I asked, did i miss something??????

yeah, like the fact that this is Thailand, and what is a lie at 8 o'clock in the morning might well be the truth by noon.

  5. Truly amazing to keep reading of bombs being thrown and detonated and such minimal injuries. Same goes for the government soldiers "exchanging hundreds of rounds" with Khmer soldiers at the border areas and not one being hit on either side. Is it the reporting being done that is incorrect or are the police and soldiers and demonstrators that inept with firearms and explosives? Makes one wonder just what is transpiring in the Land of Smiles........

They are of course two possible reasons for bombs.

First Unhappy people, protestors if you like, wanting to send a warning. These would generally done against "Yellow" targets (Bangkok Bank, Airport Fuel Tanks, Yellow leaders homes, Army establishments etc..).

Second, Yellow side, this is done to create fear and panic and ramp up the hate of the Reds, targets would be soft (McD's, Silom BTS etc...)

The above is of course just speculation on what could happen, in real life everyone can research and make their own decisions.

Everyone is fully aware now that the media in Thailand is totally censored, anything anit-Red is pumped up massively, all other news is blocked. The media in Thailand is in effect a total propaganda tool of the Yellow side now it seems.

lucky for the reds they have you.

  6. If you can't get the flight you want just sharpen some bamboo and pile up some tires and someone eventually will give you what you want.

Alternatively, you could just wear a yellow shirt, sit on the floor of the airport and get anything you want with the added bonus of knowing you'll never get punished. Much easier...

^^I would love to see you pull that off :)

  7. A friend's daughter works at KFC here in Bangkok. She gets 27 baht per hour. An 8 hour shift = 216 baht. She's lucky. Air-con atmosphere, relatively light work.

Meanwhile, up on the farm another friend's daughter is pitching in on the rice fields. Work begins about 6 a.m. and finishes at dark (approx 6 pm). HARD work comparatively, open to the whims of the environment, bent over most of the day. She gets 90 baht per day (and that's regarded as decent).

i know gals who bend over for way more ThaN 90 baht a day. more lIke 4000 baht a day. its all in how one takes advantage of what talents god gives a particular person.

i personally would give the friends daughter 40 baht a day so she can look for better work!

yeah right, sure you would. help her escape poverty by becoming a sex worker, one of the gals. :)

  8. Who ever said there was a brain-drain from australia? :D

But seriously kids. Don't take Ya baa.

my thoughts exactly when I saw this :D

Don't forget to pick up one of these when you arrive in Thailand.

In time for the Corrupt-A-Matic 2010X to spring into action. No fire fighting equipment? No problem! No license? No worries! No thought for safety? No issue! Just pay the bloated man at the front and carry on.

And now we offer a new and improved Crook-O-Tronic Infinity. No brain? Nothing to fear! Drunk? No guilt! Incapable of driving? OK! Just dip your hand in your pocket and be your way.

Here at ThaiWay Inc we guarantee that No matter what happens, No matter what law is broken, No matter how many poor people suffer, you in the suit with the family ties can walk away scot free and for a limited time only Thaiway Inc offers a free brash and guilt free attitude to causing other people to suffer.

ThaiWay inc! "It's money that matters."

hmm I've seen that same post in another thread, but it seems out of place in this one :)

  9. I'm confused...

the OP stated at least 2 times that the amount of money the family want from him is 14,500.000, not 14,500,000

it makes a huge difference where you place the dot and the comma's, and which notation you use.

I would have paid the fourteen and half K, as it seems the price for life lost in LOS

  10. For me, the best low cost / high value thing I know of is my Thai missus. Easy to live with and hassle free co-existence - just a treat her right, be kind and she'll be there for life (well, we shall see about that I guess, but so far so good)... and not only does she love to cook, she loves me enjoying her food. Total bargain.

Couldn't have said it better myself, about my Thai missus :)

  11. A bit :) but technically speaking, mangda is neither a praying mantis nor a cockroach, though they look very similar at first sight.

here's a picture that i took on a market in Phatthalung.

    post-49943-1258482662_thumb.jpg

A quote from Appon's Thai Food blog (here)

audio.gifMangda are large insects about 8 cms long, that live in rice fields in Northern Thailand. During the evening they fly around lights and are easily netted and eaten. Mang-da is also the name given to boyfriends who live off their girlfriends. They get the name because they flit from light to light. Similar to the English phrase 'bar-fly'. Someone is said to be a mang-da if their girlfriends work and they don't.

They're really difficult to photograph, I had to include some leaves in the photo to get them to calm down, so forgive the rather badly composed photograph.

    Uses

They're are pounded and used as a popular flavouring in many dishes, a very common Thai ingredient is Mang-da flavour Nam Prik (spicy chilli paste used to add flavour and spice to dishes). You can even get this is from Asian grocers, look for Mang-da flavoured chilli pastes.

They are also dry fried or grilled and eaten as is, removing the shell and legs.

According to the missus, mangda, besides the insect, has the meaning of men that live off women, or pimps, in the South too.

  12. My wife, who's been a civil servant herself until very recently, heard about this rebuff petition. She's from the South. However, as she has quit her job first of August to come join me in Farangland, she won't have to fear losing her job over this. Unless someone gets really sackedfor not signing, we both think it is only a rumour produced by the Taksin propaganda machine. But TIT, you never know....

  13. I did the refund thing twice, without any hassle.

first time I brought a camera and a video camera home that I had purchased at Carrefour. They have a service counter where you fill in a form with your details and passport number, and they print the documents that are necessary at the Tax office near the Check-in area at Suvarnabumi.

In the Tax office you have to show them the documents and the purchased goods that you plan to reclaim VAT for. After they stamp the documents, and after you check in, you can claim the money at a counter near the Duty free area.

Second time, 6 months ago, I bought a nice high end laptop in Pantip Plaza.

Brought it home same way: documents filled in at the counter of the shop; before departure I took it out of the box and in to a rucksack on departure. The box i filled it with other stuff and brought it separately in my main luggage.

This time, the officer at the Tax office just stamped the form without asking to see the goods. It would not have been a problem to do that anyway, but I was in and out in minutes.

Did I make a profit? Yes. The laptop with the same configuration would have cost me 800 euro in my home country. We have 19% VAT :D

I bought it for 28500 THB; roughly speaking 570 euro, and with 2 GB extra RAM added to it in the shop.

The Tax refund was around 2200 THB, so another 40 euro discount on my laptop purchase. Coool... :D

However, at the arrival airport, don't forget to go through the 'green', nothing to declare gate :)

At no time I have seen a queue, all went pretty swiftly.

  14. I'll let you in on my idea. If you wish to use it, all I ask is that you let me know how it sells.

All it requires is a little welding and a magnifying glass.

Take two 50 satang coins. Get a very small hinge, like you might find in a watch or eyeglass repair shop.

Weld or solder (sorry I don't know the difference) the hinge so that the coins are connected like a clamshell.

    That's it.

I call it the Siam Tweezer Squeezer. Handy for pimples, eyebrows, trimming moustache/beard or bikini area.

Good luck. You can also sell in combination with a detached moto mirror. Price it competitvely and it should sell like hotcakes.

This could most certainly be a hit.... in Thailand. :)

However, in New Zealand I doubt it.

  15. I can understand why older gentlemen fall for a BG because they fall into the hua hin/pattaya/sukhumvit trap

But really this is not necessary you can soon meet lots of ladies of your equal status by joining various clubs away from these areas.

Don't believe charging to Thailand on a white horse will save a girl because alot of girls you can meet away from the bars have good education and careers and don't need saving and may have just as much money as yourself if not more. This is my life and a few of my friends too.

    I second that.

I've been with Thai wife for two years now, we met on Meetic. It's all working out fine, because we both feel we are equal in our relationship, intellectually, educationaly and emotionally, and both willing to take care of each other for lifetime.

    We're both 40+

  16. Fellow Travellers,

Me, my wife & daugther (4) land in Hat Yai early in June for 3 nights, was originally going to 'out & about' with a family friend but they can no longer make it so we now have 3 nights and no where to stay - Songhkla beach hotels are all full - seminar in town :)

Can anyone suggest a decent beach resort within travelling distance of Hat Yai, even on other side of coast?

Alternative is to just not go - flights were almost free in Thai promotional deals. Maybe stay in Bangkok?

Considering that you are traveling with a 4 year old, there's not much to do for you in Hat Yai, except shopping and enjoying the food. I second the above poster about Krabi, and especially Ao Nang.

If you have the possibility to scrap your stay in Hat Yai, and opt for a real impression of what Paradise is like, go for it and head to Krabi/Ao Nang.

If you have not made any hotel reservations in the Songkhla/Hat Yai area ( I am guessing that you land in Bangkok and then fly Air Asia to Hat Yai?) If so, you can have your flight changed for a small fee, and rerouted to Krabi.

My (Thai) wife and I stayed in Ao Nang 4 weeks ago for 3 nights, first timer, and we'll certainly go back. PM me for more info, or pictures of the excellent resort we stayed in. I'd be happy to help if I can.
