  1. For you to obtain dependant's extension of stay under section 2.20, your wife's own permission to stay would have to be based on extension of stay issued by Thai immigration (which you would piggy back), rather than Non-B visa entry (requiring border runs every 90 days). What is the basis of her permission to stay?

Her permission to stay is based on an extension issued by Thai immigration.

  2. My American wife works at an NGO in Mae Sot and has a Non-B. Her American husband (me) is under 50, doesn't work, but wants to stay with her in Thailand.

I think I can apply for a dependent visa, Non-O. Is this correct?

I have copies of all of her paperwork, a letter from her employer about me, and our wedding documents in Thai & English.

Where would be the best place to apply for the visa; Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, or Hong Kong? Someone suggested I just get a tourist visa in one of these places and switch it to a non-o in Bangkok... Is this possible???

One last question, does my wife have to be there???

Thanks as always for all of your wisdom, you've kept me in country, happily, for 3 years now.

  3. I made it with plenty of time to spare, in fact I was at the airport about 3 hours early. I collected passport at 12, got tuk tuk to the border, spent maybe one hour getting through and then got in someones pickup truck to he airport. there are guys there who will take you for 200 baht each if there are three people. even getting the van to the centre of udon and then onto the airport should give plenty of time.

taking the 2pm bus might cut it fine, imagine it will be maybe 4 by the time you get into thailand as the bus has to wait for people to get through immigration, and then you need to get from town to the airport. Dont bother with this bus, make the journey yourself and you will be fine for time

    Great thanks for the advice.

    Cheers.

  4. Is it possible to pick up a visa and make it back to Udon Thani for a 5:40pm (17:40) departure time? I have done a few runs to Laos by bus, but this is the first time I'm flying.

I wanted to fly in Sunday; drop off Monday; pick up Tuesday and catch a 17:40 flight home Tuesday evening from Udon. Has anyone done it? What's the travel time from Vientiane bus station to Udon Airport. I know there's a 14:00 bus leaving Vientiane bus station. Is that cutting it too close?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

  5. All US citizens and greencard holders are required to report their world-wide income each year. If they meet either the physical presence or the bona fide resident rules, they may exclude up to $90,000 each year. This is not automatic and they must file a US tax return to claim the exclusion.

To the extent that income is not excluded, US taxpayers may claim a credit for some portion (but not dollar for dollar) for taxes paid to another country. The US-Thai income tax treaty has a provision to this effect but the credit is actually from the Internal Revenue Code.

You imply that you are not a US citizen. If this is the case, the rules as to what income needs to be reported, etc. can become very complex. They generally are not a "do-it-yourself" project.

    We're both US citizens.

  6. My American wife just got a job with an American NGO in Thailand. Does she have to pay US taxes or is she exempt because we are living outside of the US?

The NGO sent us a form 673 to claim exemption if we are eligible, but like most government material, it's a bit unclear. To qualify for exemption it states we must either fall under the Bona Fide residence test or physical presence test.

Does anyone have experience dealing with this? Your help is much appreciated.

  7. the next day on my return i left it until 2.30 to collect as i wanted to miss the hoards of people going and i did notice a sign of it bieng closed for 2 days, next week i think, it was sothing like thursday and friday for i think the queens/ queens daughters birthday???? i was gonna write it down but forgot, sorry!!

now i thought it said 18th and 19th but thats a mon/tue, so best check if ya off soon.

I checked the Consulate's website and they said they would be closed on the 12th Aug. for the Queens biethday is anyone else hearing anything different??

I'm planning on going this weekend and applying Monday 11th with hopes to pick up and leave on Wednesday 13th.. Should I be concerned??

Also, is it possible to recieve a non-b or non-o in Vientiene?? Is it difficult? I have a letter from my University and an organizational chart, will I need anything else?

If I get denied for the Non-b will they issue me a TV so I can work it out in Chiang Mai?? and will I have to reapply for that and wait pay again???

  8. Mario.....when you don't know please don't comment. He only needs a Thai Police Clearance after he has resided here for more than a year.

I have been here for more than a year...

So, I just need the regular documents (copy of my passport and photos) and

    the letter from the Wat/University,

a map of the University and my home (what kind of map??)

    and what else????

  9. Believe you should apply for a non immigrant B visa and you should have the school papers and a receipt for work permit application and this is done at a Consulate outside Thailand - for teaching you will probably also require police clearance report.

You need a work permit for any work.

Expect the letter would be questioned if over a month old but that would be up to the Consulate.

Your Embassy in Bangkok has nothing to do with stay in Thailand. If you are talking about Immigration (probably) they can convert visas if your employment qualifies for one year extension of stay. You should check with Immigration office as to current exact requirements as they often change.

So, I need to begin to process the work permit first?

Someone else I know went and got the non-b first in KL and now she's working on getting her work permit.. Police clearance?? where do I acquire that?

  10. Hello again,

Thank you as always for being such a great resource for all my visa questions. This is a two-parter.

I have begun volunteering at a Wat/school and they have given me a letter to obtain the proper visa. Which Visa do I apply for when it's volunteer work and what other papers will I need?? Someone also told me that I would need working papers as well even if it's volunteer work because it's teaching.. is that true?? And the letter is dated June, can I still use it or will that be a problem??

Also, When I went to Mae Sai last month some of the teachers on the bus said we can apply for our Visas at the embassy in Bangkok now for the law has just changed. They were on their way there after getting stamped. Is that true or do I still have to leave the country?? And if so, Is Laos a good place to get this type of visa processed??

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    With gratitude,

    M

  11. Where in Chiang Mai can I buy an old Super Cub????

    Hi :o

I too am interested to know about that same subject - i have NEVER seen a Dream with disc front brake. And specially in Chiang Mai the Dream is way more popular than the Wave....... i very much prefer to ride a Dream because they are much more comfortable, not complaining about the Wave but the Dream has it's name rightly :D

Yet if i want to buy a brand new bike i expect a disc brake too. Even if it costs extra. It *should* at least be available! But anyway i think the front forks of Wave and Dream are similar enough that a Dream could be outfitted with parts originally for a Wave, to get the disc brake.... a modification i would do in any case if no other possibility.

    @PeaceBlondie

Staying in Chiang Mai for a couple of weeks i fall all over in love again with those little Honda four-strokers. And in Chiang Mai all of them are present - the Super Cub (the one i want most!!), it's direct successor Dream 100 and every Dream built after that right to the 2007 Dream Exces. And yes, there are massive differences between them - yet still the Dream looks the closest to the Super Cub still while Wave and similar derivatives are just shadow copies. Yet still i hang on to my trusty bulldozer Yamaha RXZ two-stroke rocket, just today got V-4 suspension installed (that is four shocks in the rear in V-Style, two on each side) and have a racing-style foot rest set coming from Malaysia. But one day i'll find and buy a Super Cub......

    Best regards....

    Thanh

  12. The office for Amphur Muang is in the middle of the old city. It's just south of the women's prison, about 3 or 4 blocks west of 3 kings monument. You can go during weekdays during regular business hours. Do you have all the documents you need in order?

I registered my marriage there last month. It took about 45 min.

    Thank you!!!!!
