  1. A friend of mine was at The Boat Bar in Paradise (Patong) last night (02/03/2007).

He told me that someone was shot in the head in the bathroom upstairs. With all the noise downstairs it seems that most of the punters were unaware of the incident and carried on partying. It wasn't until the police removed the body that some punters became alarmed and left.

I haven't heard or seen any other reports of this; so do not know any further details.

    Can anyone confirm this incident?

  2. What's illegal about seeking employment? I thought only working with a tourist visa is illegal?

And I also thought that also a tourist 60 day visa can be applied for 3 times within a year only. No?

That means that you can never travel to Thailand to seek work unless you have been invited to do so, and have a letter that approves your non-B.

So a job in Thailand can only be found online or by connections with people that live in Thailand. Is that what it means ?

Then people have to provide you a non-b letter before your interview. And that is impossible! In some immigration offices they don't just ask you a letter, but all the information of the company. How will you ever get this when they haven't even hired you??

Yes I am aware of the huge amount of illegal workers in Thailand, people that will never get a pension, or maybe even drink so much that they cannot practically be alive at the time they cannot work anymore (and normally would receive a pension). What are they all doing here then....

All I can say is that Freedom does not exists in the world, and Thailand is a great country to learn this.

Thai Nationalism will make sure that you will always be and feel like an outsider, Thailand should favor you being here and the other way round, who cares!

What you favor about thailand is probably not the thing that Thailand is proud off, so everyone who will contribute to Thailand's bad reputation should go in the first place. Or you could do that job that illegal workers normally do, like the Burmese. Thai just want to make clear that Foreigners don't own this country, even if some think they do. Everything seems so easy, as if they can play gods. While this behavior is not possible anywhere in the world, why would anyone expect it from Thailand. Maybe they're not so fast, but they learn by mistake, that's all.

This needs to be said much more often. There are many legal ways to get a visa and stay on one year extensions. "Tourists" would have to be millionaires to stay on consecutive 90 day visas. Not many millionaires in LOS. And it doesn't take years to "tour" Thailand. The farangs complaining the most are those "flying under the radar" so to speak.

If someone can give me an example that shows me wrong......................

    Okay, you want an example!

I am an Australian citizen, I am not a millionaire (Aust value that is). I do own a small property in Melbourne which has a mortgage but I still make a modest profit on the rental return. I have worked very hard for most of my life and have reasonable but not life long cash reserves in Australian investment facilities. I have only just turned 50 and am still processing my life's future options. I am not married (nor do I intend to be).

I arrived in Thailand on the 5th December 2007 with a single entry tourist visa. My original intention had been to teach English but it very quickly became apparent that it was probably not going to be a pleasurable experience for the return and so I abandoned all ideas of that pursuit.

I have always been in the country legally. I have done a few visa runs out of Ranong (when you could get 30 day stamps). I have flown to Australia twice to get double entry tourist visas and I have been to Laos once for a double entry TV. This year I have been activating my 2nd TV entries via the land border to Malaysia.

I live in Krabi Province, in a very small village on the coast. I call it paradise.

I spend my time pursuing many different recreational activities, swimming, diving, cycling, climbing, reading, gardening to name just a few. Mostly, I am content.

I rent a house from a local villager, I shop at the local market twice a week and try to only shop for incidentals at the local mum n pop shops (not at the 7). I only go to Tesco in Krabi Town for my essential supply of peanut butter and rolled oats. The point of this, is that nearly every baht that I spend goes into the local village. I do not work or receive any income in Thailand.

Some of the local kids come to me for assistance with their English homework, which I willingly and freely provide and I receive assistance with my Thai language from most of the locals that I encounter in any given day.

I believe I provide, albeit in a very small way, a valuable contribution / experience for the local Thai people which many I count as my friends. In return, my gain is incalculable; I am richer in so many ways for this opportunity to live here..........as frustrating at times it can be. I love the country, the people, the food etc etc but I have no intentions in the clearest of thoughts to transfer my hard earned cash into a Thai bank account.

If my time here has come to an end, I will be sad and it will require a lot of soul searching but so be it!

  3. It is possible that you may arrive in time for your flight, however it will not be a relaxed departure.

The long boats generally do not leave the beach without a full compliment of passengers, the alternative is to pay extra for an exclusive journey. The trip will take approximately 20 minutes. It looks like it will be low tide on the 4th early-ish in the morning (only have Dec chart) which will influence arrival point at Ao Nang beach and thus taxi pickup point.

The taxi will be late and when it does meet you it will then take maybe 40 minutes to get you to the airport.

Departure from the beach at Railay no later than 7 am is highly recommended or preferably, stay the night in Ao Nang.

    Enjoy your holiday.

    Hi,

I'm staying in Railay East over New Year and leaving Krabi on 4th Jan - flying at 10.10am with Thai Airways.

Am I going to have enough time to get to the airport via boat and taxi....? Assume I need to be at the airport at least 1 hour before...

What time to boats start running from Railay?

    Thanks

Theres long boats running at dawn. 5:30 am from Ao nang. You'll have plenty of time.

    Great - thank you!

  4. I am looking for a good gay Thai men's doctor for my Thai boyfriend.

We live in Krabi, so one located in Krabi would be great but Phuket is suitable (and probably more realistic).

The doctor doesn't necessarily need any specific expertise beyond empathy and an understanding of gay men's health issues.

Can anyone give a recommendation, please?

  5. I was in the middle of doing a visa run to Malaysia at the time of the first publication on ThaiVisa of this change.

Needless to say I was a somewhat surprised to be told I could only have 15 days.

I have just completed a double-entry tourist visa (180 days).

I now have what is remaining of 15 days.

My question is about getting back to back tourist visas:

Will there be any difficulty in obtaining another double-entry tourist visa next week?

I was thinking of going to Laos.

I have been in Thailand in the same hamlet in Krabi Province for just over 1 year almost continuously (a mix of visa-runs and TVs).

    I am Aussie

    I am unmarried

    Financially independant

    Under retirement age

I have no problems with following all the rules, I just need to know what they are.

  6. The GL sauna in Hat Yai is the only one that I have found so far. I don't recall what web site I found it on, but it also mentioned a few bars. One of which looked as if it had closed down but the other is near the entrance to GL but was not open on the night I was in town. (or maybe had already closed by the time I left the sauna).

Does anyone now of any venues in Nakhon si Thamarat?

  7. I was in Songkhla Province last week for a bit of a look around. It definitely gets an undeserved rap and I encourage all adventurers to go and check out Hat Yai and Songkhla cities.

Whilst in Hat Yai I went to the GL Sauna, whilst it was a bit of an effort to find it; I was well rewarded.

The sauna is on 2 levels the first being the wet area and gym. Upstairs is a bar and through on the otherside of that space are cubicles.

The place is clean and well appointed and the Thai patrons are very enthusiastic, as are the staff I might add.

Entry price is okay I suppose, I was charged 250 baht but it did include a free drink. Having paid 1900 for my 30 day visa extension earlier in the day, I was feeling a little skint.

There are also a number of gay bars in town but I will have to check them out next time I am down that way; that is of course if I can tear myself away from GL Sauna.

  8. Thanks for your informed response, that is how I remember Ao Nang too. I spent many good times there last year.

I am now living in Ao Luk which unlike Ao Nang is off the usual tourist trail. Its a big town but caters only to the locals which of course must include a certain percentage of gays but there are no specific gay venues (that I can find). I did have the good fortune of being picked up in the local internet cafe once but thats a bit random to rely upon.

  9. The following job ad states "It is mandatory to possess a degree (regardless of subject) to teach in Thailand"

    http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/av/Job/250711-167

    Is this true?

I have a TEFL certificate which I did in Thailand mid this year, the cert included real teaching practice with young adults.

I am now about to return to Thailand (5th Dec) to find a job and stay.

I am only really interested in locating in a southern regional area (Surat Thani, Nakhon si Thammarat, Krabi, Khao Lak).

I am male, 48 yrs old, been in the IT industry for 20 years and for the last few years managed an IT department for a major multi national.......loads of experience but no completed degree.

What are my chances of getting an english teaching job and a work permit?
