  1. If you hear of something Kenandlat it would be interesting, but I am not really too worried. It was just that I saw your reference to the Danish bar and I'm pretty sure that was the place I saw last year. I thought that as I am spending 18 days in total in Chaiyaphum I may have tried that out for a couple of beers one lunchtime or something. I will be with my wife and two young daughters so I will be kept occupied I am sure !

  2. Hi Guys,

Was that Danish Bar next to an internet cafe ? I was in Chaiyaphum last year and seem to remember seeing a farang type bar as I came out of the internet place but I didn't have time to go in.

The reason I ask is that I will be in Chaiyaphum again from 14th November to 1st December and like Ken was also hoping to find a farang watering hole and had that place in mind. Shame that it's gone.

Have to agree about the farang food too !!! Doesn't bother me as I love Thai food, but last time I did just fancy a pizza when I saw the place near where Tesco Lotus is now. Shouldn't have bothered !

I spent nearly two weeks there last year and having an extended stay this time I was hoping I might find a bar to escape to. Looks like I'll be out of luck. I gather there are a couple of hotels there, anyone any idea if they have bars.

  3. That link I provided was current from the UKVisa site. I haven't had any first hand experience for a while as my wife has a UK visa now anyway. I know, I am surprised that it is still the same, but can't see anything to the contrary.

Yea Bermuda is expensive, and a long way from the OP. It isn't a remote Pacific or Asian location either, but when you are limited to where you can travel by visa restrictions it's handy to know you can get here without one if you want to.

  4. There was also member of this forum who took his Thai girlfriend to visit Bermuda for which, if memory serves me well, she didn't require a visa.

    Scouse.

That's correct. Thai's don't need a visa for Bermuda. They don't need a visa to transit the UK either, even if you land at Heathrow and transfer to Gatwick.

As its states you must arrive and leave by air within 24 hours and have no intention of staying in the UK (you can travel by rail or road between two airports); and have a confirmed onward booking that will leave within 24 hours of your arrival in the UK.

Only problem is we are about to be hit by a hurricane !! :o

  5. Anyway why can't someone feeling 100 % Thai know there is a big world out there ?

Because it's only the super rich Thais who get to experience it. Most people in the UK have been abroad - I even went abroad at least half a dozen times on school trips. I would be interested to know what percentage of the Thai population have travelled abroad for leisure. That's one reason why Thai people assume that every farang in Thailand is well to do (which of course they're not!) is because the very fact that you had the money to fly here elevates you above such huge numbers of people here.

Ok I agree with that entirely, what I really meant was someone like a Luk Kreung feeling 100% Thai being able to know the big world out there. His circumstances would be very different from the average Thai, depending of course on the circumstances of the farang parent. Feeling 100% Thai doesnt stop you, it's the financial constraints of the average Thai that does.

And M&M I also agree with you about the best of both worlds.

But I would have thought a Luk Kreung brought up in Thailand would also have the best of both worlds. Obviously M&M and Berries you disagree because of the education and discrimination issues. Do you think your views are widely held ? Is discrimination widespread ? Is it not possible to get a good education anywhere in Thailand ?

I would also have thought children who "look different" in the UK probably come up against a similar thing at school, or do you really think it is worse in Thailand ?

  6. I don't want him being/feeling 100% Thai. I want him to know there is a big world out there and it'shis if he wants it.

    Exactly!

Are you saying you would rather your children feel 100% a citizen of Australia or wherever else for that matter ? Surely they can feel part of both cultures. Anyway why can't someone feeling 100 % Thai know there is a big world out there ?

Do you really feel that a child can get a better education in Australian/UK state schools than anywhere in Thailand ? I don't know I ask this as a genuine question. I know all my wifes Thai friends say don't move to Thailand give your children an education in the U.K., but on the other hands my friends ( with children) from the UK say whatever do you want to come back here for !!

  7. And your point is what exactly?
My point is that you should raise them wherever they have the best chance of being attractive i.e. the cool, popular kids. It's a far better indicator of their future prospects than education or anything else.

:o You've got to be joking

You mean tall, good looking, athletic, blonde..... seem to remember someone else had that theory before, herrenvolk or something !

  8. By success I meant in financial terms - I thought that was clear. I am here on an expat package and enjoy the lifestyle that affords me. I am married to a Thai and I worry about staying here long term because a) I am concerned that it will limit my son's future prospects to Thailand (wheras I have the luxury of being able to work world wide) and :o If he does stay in Thailand he will be paid Thai wages which will afford him a much lower life style than the one he's grown up in. Of course there are opportunities for Thais to make enough money to have a good lifestyle, I just think that there are far fewer than there are in the West. I mean even if you don't have an actual profession in the UK, you can make a very good living. I remember nearly 10 years ago when I was at university working part time and earning 30,000 baht a month pocket money. That's probably more like 50,000 a month now - those opportunitites just don't exist here. Would you be happy with your kids working somewhere here for 300 baht a day? I know there's a different mentality in Thailand and kids are often dependent on their parents for much longer than they are in the west but perhaps that's partly because they have no other option but to be dependent. I want my children to have the same opportunities as I have had from a state education in the UK, nothing more. It's easy for us expats to think that our kids will be grateful to grow up in such a wonderful country, which I totally agree it is, but I think we sometimes forget that part of the reason it's so wonderful is because we're expats and that it actually looks quite different through Thai eyes.

I've been wondering exactly the same thing. We are thinking about moving to Thailand in a couple of years. The only thing that bothers me is what the impact on the children will be. I would have thought that, providing they can get a decent education ( and that's another story) that they would be ok. Why would your son be limited to a future inThailand ? My kids have Thai and U.K. passports and they are starting to grow up speaking Thai and English. Nowadays if you have the right qualifications you can work pretty much anywhere in the world that you want to. A UK passport alone gives you the right to work in the E.U. and growing up bi-lingual has advantages of it's own. That's what I am trying to convince myself anyway ! I would be interested to see what others thoughts are. The alternative is a state education in the UK. Would that really give them more advantage than being brought up in Thailand with a good education ? The problem I can see is getting that education in Thailand. I can't afford the prices of the high end International Schools, so I am trying to find out as much as possible about schools at the moment and will be checking out some again in November. The advantage I have at the moment is that, if we move, my children will only be young, approx 7 and 5 yrs old, so we would have time to make changes without impacting too much on their education.

  9. would that rule out getting a retirement visa, if one has a record of being arrested, but no charges were pursued, hence no conviction?

    thanks,

    an innocent man here

A criminal record means having previous criminal convictions. You will be able to get a letter from your local police department sayng you have no criminal convictions. Being arrested doesn't constitute a criminal offence. Even if you had been charged that still doesn't count. You would only have a criminal record if you had been to court and found guilty and therfore have a criminal conviction against you.

  10. Also - If your airline tickets are for a 6 week stay, you would be better with the visa as they may refuse to take you without it.

Almost certainly. No visa ... no go.

I am in a similar situation. The wife is Thai and kids have Thai and UK passports . We are travelling to Thailand via the UK on BA. We will be staying in Thailand 35 days so I am currently in the process of getting a visa. I called BA and pointed out that I could get an extension when I arrived , but they still said I should get a visa BEFORE I travel as they can be fined heavily for allowing people on the flight without the proper documents and I did not want to risk not being allowed on the flight. So my intention is for the children to use UK passports to enter the UK and Thai passports to Thailand , the wife already has a UK visa and I will have a Thai visa.

    Fellow tractor boy !!

Town fan ? It's not good at the moment ! the natives are getting restless!

You have to enter Thailand within three months of the Visa being issued.

Yes Town Fan here, you know it's really bad when a home draw with Hull is a good result !!

  12. There goes the theory that Grandmas know everything!

Little Tony was staying with his grandmother for a few days. He'd

been playing outside with the other kids for a while when he came into

the house and asked her, "Grandma, what is that called when people are

sleeping on top of each other?"

She was a little taken aback, but decided to tell him the truth...

    It's called sexual intercourse, darling."

Little Tony just said, "Oh, OK" and went back outside to talk and

    play with the other kids.

A few minutes later he came back in and said angrily, "Grandma, it is

not called sexual intercourse! It's called Bunk Beds!"

  13. Do you know if you have enabled (or disabled) your cookies ?

    Tools/Internet Options/Privacy tab.

    (default setting is Medium)

    Also:

Tools/Internet Options/Security (Default Level button). Default setting is Medium. If it is set to high, you may have problems with automatic log-ins.

Yes mine are enabled. It's only this site I have problems with. I've been constantly checking three other sites where I have "remember me" enabled and I don't have any problems with them.

  14. This is strange. I have just come back to the site and now I have to log in again. Same thing get the "welcome guest /log in" but now if I go to a forum I am not logged in and have to go through the process again. It's only happening on this site.

  15. I have the same problem with remember me . Tried on another computer at work aswell. Thought it was a settings problem at first but all other sites I have to log into are remembering me apart from this forum site. I've got all my cookies enabled etc , but I have to log in every time I visit the site

OK I just realised what is happening. When I return to the site I get the "welcome guest /log in " page which makes it appear that I am not logged in, however when I actually click on any of the forums after that I am actually logged in.
