  1. I've often wondered why there are so many Brits in Thailand. I'm talking young Brits in their late 20s, early 30s, who should be pursuing careers in England. Instead, they are here working shit teaching jobs just so they can stay. What happens when they're 65 and have nothing? I have an excuse - I'm retired, got a pension and a ton of bucks in the bank. I'm here to chill. Is it realy that bad in England? Must be a miserable little island....

very funny, probably the same reason the phillipines is over run by yanks ? ? ? ahem :o

  2. We all know the answer is to take 50% of them off the road, stop them parking up and onlywanting to work private hire and to get some proper taxis to work on the meter.

Until then, the little bastards can starve on their Bt5 or Bt10 forever (which they won't as the maths proves) save the few good ones.

i remmber about a year ago (or just before the prices went up due to fuel inflation) a bkk taxi, meter on of course,i could go a 17 km trip for about 100 b.no rip offs and an absolute bargain, still cheap now,i salute these guys !!! ( the ones that don't smell of a sang som distellary anyway)

  3. [surprise surprise that this thread is so long.

i cant get my head around the bb system in pattaya, they charge what they like, and go whatever route they like.10 b is just for short journeys, they want 20 any more than 2 intersects.

why cant there be a system of numbered routes, which drivers follow FOR A FIXED FEE,like buses back at home, after all,it is a baht BUS.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE,HAS ANYBODY BEEN TO OR LIVING IN UDON OR UBON......?

    I T W O R K S J U S T F I N E T H E R E ! !

yes,of course,it is a mafia related rip off business.

in the end i got peeved of to the extent that i just went out and bought a m/c.

  4. I have a friend who is from the UK,he has two small children together with his Thai wife, they are legally married/registered in Thailand.

He wondered if it was possible to claim Child Benefit from the authorities in the UK,that deal with this situation, and, are there any THAI VISA members in a similar situation, who maybe enlighten him on this subject.

    All replies greatfully received.

    thanks

    KC

i looked into this, after hearing about a french national being able to do just that,(claim benefit despite living abroad)i looked into the dwp website, all thru the small print, and i couldn't find anything positive, but,i would love to know someone who has found a way round this,as i've just had no.2 come into the world, and that money would be REALLY handy,as work here has dried up so much, the visa and permits alone cost more than the income. will be watching this thread very closely !!!!

  5. I agree that the cost is ridiculous. The US consulate charges $30, which is around 1000B at current rates. Even this seems too much, but is much more reasonable than the UK consulate. I have both UK and US passports, so could probably choose where to go. It's a pity there's not an open market for this---competition might bring the price down! Neil

not just on residency,me and a friend did our affirmations to marry(not to each other of course,he snores) cost 3500 b just for a sig and stamp.fin unbelievable.i gather tho that these costs are for the existance of the consulate, and the help they may be required to give their fellow countrymen in certain circumstances,i gather if i topped myself they would inform my next of kin for free. ????

  6. I heard news today that WW was broken into recently. Hope that all is well for Richard and Ting and not too distressful for them and hope not too much stolen.

just the big screen t v,and float money.buggers probably caused more damge through the actual entry and additional stress to r+t.happens everywhere,i know, just not pleasant when yrself or friends are the victims.

  7. hello richard,i thought this topic was dead, hence no further input after the reply from marcoh, with details and directions.only after another one of your customers mentioned a ho-haa on the thai visa website involving you business and n-joy,i felt i had to check the archive on this subject to see if it was anything to do with my original post, and,it turns out it has.

just to put you in the picture,it was on a visit to ubon in early december 2007,there were no other customers in,so i asked yr wife if there were any other places farang hang out,to which her reply was,no-this is the only place, i was surprised,so repeated the question adding 'near the river' and'up the big road'.again answer was 'no,this is the only place in ubon for farang'.i didn't believe that could be the case, hence the original thread.

didn't mean it to start an argument.

you were in japan i think at the time.

anyway, enjoying yrplace as well as loiu's

just wanted to put you in the pic

    cheers

    jason

  8. It never worked. The rule is 90 days in a six month period (not 180 days). Overstay payment at a land crossing is subject to arrest en route so not a good idea. It could also result in other country not allowing entry and then you would be arrested as illegal entry upon return to Thailand and deported.

sounds like i'm fukced, was going to get married next month as well to save going through all this krappe, whats the 90 days in 6months,90 days of exempt stamp or 90 days of visas ???

  9. I got a double entry tourist visa in laos. After my 2X60 days I did a border run and got 30 days entry without visa. Can i still do 2 more 30 days and then back to Laos for a single/double entry proper tourist visa.

Someone told me they have changed again and you are not allowed back to thailand within 6 months under any circumstances (they wont give you a proper tourist visa)

Also is the double entry tourist visa for thailand still available in vientianne? Or where?

i'm having a problem myself, after my non-0 finished,i did 3 cambodia runs,1 60 day t v in laos,30 days extension at immigration, but as some cambodia runs were done a few days early,i am short 5 days,ie i have done onlly 175 days and not the 180 required.i went to immigration (pattaya) to check i could just pay the 5 days overstay on the next border run, i was told that i had to leave the kingdom by aircraft and pay the overstay at the airport, anyone else heard of this, has the 3 runs followed by t v's 3 times finished now.......???

  10. i am aware of a bar called 'the wrong way cafe'

but are there any others in this town, that would be suitable for the likes of farang,

food not important, just cold beer and other company that speaks english !!!

Try N-Joy, that is nice and more home deco than WW, it's bit off from the town but close by ver reasonable rated accomodation cross the street (Ubon Jail) :o

N-Joy Bar & Restaurant in 300/1 Phalochai rd., run By EEt & Loui (Aussie) Phalochai rd. is west of Chayangkun rd., pass Tohsang hotel, Ubon prison, its 200 meters after the big rooster on the opposit side

and close by Nevada hotel there is lot of joints where you can speak Eng, but not so much farangs there.

Also Swing party house in Chayakoon road opposite of Kasikorn Bank.

    thanks marco h,

was beginning to worry there'd be nowhere else to go,the owner of the ww said there was no-where else !!!

am moving to warin next month to be nearer my son, just need the odd evening out now and then, but didn't want karaoke being the only other option.i know about the ones near the nevada, the one nearest the grand i watch the footie in when i'm up that way.

thanks for the directions as well !!

  12. I am in the States and got a call from my GF about our dogs. It appears that they were poisoned. Two have already died in the late morning and three others have a high temp., 8 hours later. I am not sure who did this but hope to find out. The pain in our hearts is unbelievable as these dogs have been with us since pups and have been well taken care of, shots, fixed etc. Is there anything the law can do ? I am not who the SOBs are who did this but I have to make them PAY! Can I take them to court if I fine who they are ? Please advise as I can no longer think clearly. I am mad as hel_l ! :o:D:D
sorry to hear this,my friend in udon called me in tears a few days ago,her dog poisoned by a neighbour, albeit accidentally(sort of)....neighbour was trying to poison a soi dog due to it taking his chickens, but the friends dog took the bait instead, i say again, she is VERY upset.

this country needs some sort of warden system countrywide to collect stray dogs and do whatever with them. i get pissed off many a time with 'soi dogs' aggressively barking and coming up to me, only been bitten once in 3 years, but it only needs to be once if rabies is there....

anyway,my point, this country needs to do something about strays. . . . . .thats it.

  13. You don't have to marry. You can apply to the Home Office in the UK through the embassy in Bangkok to register your son as a British citizen. The cost is approximately £450.00.

    Scouse.

as per the british embassy, child needs to be legitimised before he can be registered.the rules changed about a year and half ago,if born after july 2006 no need to marry, just my luck. :o

i understand i can still register him without going through marriage, but its very very expensive and i don't like the words on the form from embassy, saying its at their discretion.the marriage will also give me a lever for non-o visa's anyway,as i am on t r 's at the mo.

looks like this needs some pro advice, thanks tho :D

I am not sure that £450.00 is expensive, when in regard to your Son.

    Moss

its the wording on the form from the embassy, married ,piece of cake 100 quid, cheers

    not married,pay 450 and ''''' erm...maybe.....'''''

its not the 450 that would be a prob ,its the '''''maybe''''' that may mean NO !!!

  14. If you liked it, you are certainly free to look for another destination.

I monitored myself last night, and I got the impression that many tourist were wandering around the city, wondering what happened and why most of the bars were closed. Certainly most of them did not enjoy being banned from having a beer.

agreed, hard enough for people to earn a crust here,

i certainly would be pi55ed off if i came 6000 miles and paid a lot of dosh for my 2 week annual beano and couldn't even have a beer.

i do agree that some places are just to over the top with regards to music and a5540les selling moody gear,i just use my feet,i very rarely venture into pattaya nowadays, much more sedate near me in soi khao talo/khao noi.

  15. Maybe I'm a bit behind the times here, but I was under the impression that you needed to have been married at the time the child was born to claim British citizenship for him.

as per the british embassy, child needs to be legitimised before he can be registered.the rules changed about a year and half ago,if born after july 2006 no need to marry, just my luck. :o

  16. What do you want to put in the pre-nup?

its more about losing my lifes savings, she knows that i may re-settle with him in the uk at some stage, thats not a prob with her

but she a devious sort (sound familiar?) and her friends like to stir things up as well,

so its about protecting my money basically

  17. dunno if anyone can put us in the picture,but...

i need to be married to register my 2 y o son at the uk embassy for dual citizenship, but i don't trust his mum an awful lot.

is a pre-nup legal in thailand, does it have any standing if the marriage falls flat,(likely)

where can they be done , any one else done one,at what sort of cost blah blah etc

  18. i am sure this has been asked a million times before, but can someone give me some sensible advice?

    i am in pattaya,am a british citizen 42 y.o.

my non o visa from the uk has expired and now i'm on the dreaded 30 day cambodia runs.

i need a new non o visa, but hopefully without the hassle of returning to the uk just yet, since baby number 2 is on the way.i'm not yet married to the girlfriend, but will have to one day :o before i resettle back in blighty with the sprogs.

i've heard about tourist and non-o visas to penang, but where is best place to get a 1 yr non o,am looking at vientiane, sawannaket,or kl.

if i manage to only get a single entry for 90 days, what is the procedure in getting a 12 month extension.

with a 12 month extension ,do i need a tm.47to leave / renter the kingdom, how much does this cost?????

    any relevant advice appreciated,
