  1. I have two questions regarding required bank funds to obtain a non-immigrant O-A/retirement visa.

First, the requirment assumes one has an established bank account in Thailand. I've been told that without a work permit an individual can not open a Thai bank account. Is this correct and if so then how does one deposit funds into an account they can not establish?? I am currently not living or working in Thailand.

Secondly, aren't there still restrictions in place that dictate any funds transferred into Thailand in excess of USD 20,000 requires 30% to be put in escrow for one year with the Reserve Bank and no interest?? Again, assuming this is correct then how do you transfer the funds without giving the Thai government a 30% loan with no interest??

    Thanks for any replies.

You will not be able to open a traditional "checking account" but you will be able to open a "savings account" which has the same priveleges as a checking account. You will get an ATM card which can also be used as a debit card.

I recommend Bangkok Bank which has banches all over Thailand.

  2. Congrats on the easy secural of your retirement extension with a POI from your Embassy. I have done the same for four years. However, I'm hearing that Immigration is now requiring the POI be issued by your Embasssy yearly as oppossed to adequate for the duration of your passport. I have used the same POI for all of my extensions in the past. Did you happen to ask that question when you presented it to Immigration?

If you are truly a "sit on the bank under a tree" type fisherman.....here's the technique I recommend.

    1. While buying your Leo, buy a bag of medium size fish pellets (fish food), a small bag of rice bran (made from rice hulls)and a bag of potting clay (used in the pots to plant water lillies).

    2. After you find your tree on the side of the lake.........mix the fish pellets, rice bran and potting clay together (adding a little water to keep the mixture pliable). More clay than hulls or pellets so it will form a ball of clay loaded with the pellets and bran. Once this is done throw into the water where you intend to fish. It will attract fish.

    3. If using a local fiberglass pole.......rig the line to be the same length of the pole. Add a float, a small weight and medium black colored hook (they don't like silver).

    3. Bait that hook with pieces of prawn or a worm or whatever you can find. You can even use one of the fish pellets in your mixture once it is softened a little.

    4. Now just wait, drink, and scratch your antbites.

    Good luck!
