  1. 1. Begin with registering the domain as "private" and use your home address

    2. Start by setting the business up as a personal venture... if it starts to grow, then think about incorporating a company

    3. Personal bank account

    4. There's loads of ad and affiliate networks out there... a quick search on google will find you many. The ideal situation is to sell ad space privately, but that may seem difficult in the early stages. Better of finding a product/service that is related to your niche/users and finding an affiliate program you can promote. You receive a commission from the sales you generate from your ad space. Many networks, such as cj.com wire funds into personal bank accounts.

    5. I'd outsource the project if you can't code yourself. I highly recommend spending time to write a REALLY detailed spec before looking to hire someone. I've used Guru.com many times and as long as you choose someone with previous work examples similar to your project, and has a good feedback rating, you'll be ok.

  2. Hey all,

I have taken on a project that requires to do A LOT of uploading and downloading and with the not so fast net speeds here in bkk, I was thinking of jetting away someone for a couple of weeks to do the work. The only problem is I'm not sure where in South East Asia offer really FAST net acess? I'll probably rent a villa or something so that will resrict a lot of places, however I need to start searching somewhere.

    Any help is much appreciated.

  3. Dashes are best used in the URL to separate keywords, although it doesn't matter for the domain name with regards to SEO - The reason being that other sites linking to you will most likely add spaces between the words and you'll obviously add spaces between the words in the body text.

An example: type "seobangkok" or "seo bangkok" into google : the top site is listed for either combinations.

Personally I prefer domains without dashes, they seem a little easier to remember and are a little less spammy in my opinion :o

I always give the same advice to any newbies starting out on-line: learn SEO and outsource the rest. Outsourcing design and development is very cheap, whereas hiring someone that knows SEO inside out works out very expensive. Check out seomoz.org - A great site dedicated to teaching newbies SEO.

  4. I'm itching to play some face to face poker and with my missus having just booked up a weekend away with uni - I thought this is a perfect chance to go and check out the poker scene in Macau and get some games in. If any members are up for joining me, feel free to PM or leave a post here! I'm planning for 4/5/6 July.

    Cheers!

  5. I'm a huge wordpress fan and wanted to know how many other's living in Thailand use or want to learn more about the free publishing platform, Wordpress?

Wordcamps are being set up all around the world, which aims to bring wordpress users under one roof for a day or two for networking, learning and sessions from the people who know a thing or two about WP. I'm toying with the idea of setting one up in Bangkok, but would like suggestions on how I could find out the level of interest.

I have the resources to organise speakers, sessions, venue and sponsors. That just leaves attendees.

What do you guys think? Are there enough people in Thailand, and the neighboring countries that use wordpress to make such an event work out?

Failing a big(ish) event, maybe just start off with a small group meeting up in a coffee house to see how things went? I know there are a lot of web publishers that are based in Thailand, and an opportunity to meet others in the same field sounds like great fun!

  6. Some nice phuket lobster will be fine. I'm holding a bit of a dinner party next week and wanted to do something a special :o

The restaurant sounds like a cool place to check out (thanks for the link!) but isn't there a market where I can go and buy them from? Where do all the hotels get there's from? I'm looking to buy for 8 people so would prefer to go to a market if poss.

    Thanks again!

  7. Lately I've really been getting into cooking at home, but think I need some more inspiration for new dishes to try. I thought the best way is to buy some new cookery books, hence this post :o

What's the best cookery book you have ever read/bought?

Any books that take cooking to a whole new level? (like the Elbulli book but without the price tag)?

What cookery book do you refer to most?

    All cuisines welcome!

    I look forward to everyone’s responses :D

  8. Does anyone know of anywhere in Bangkok that sells live lobsters? I'm thinking maybe a fish market may be worth trying, so if anyone knows of a good fish market in bangkok, please let me know :o

It's worth noting that I want to cook the lobsters at home.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. The users make this site/forum what it is... my feelings are that you should allow them to promote their business if they want to. Banner placements still take up more on-screen real estate so I doubt you'll loose business there.

But hey, this isn't my site so I guess I have no choice but to follow the rules (until another forum takes over thaivisa that allows links) :o

  10. I'm a member of a handfull of forums but Thaivisa is the only one that doesn't let user's add a post signature.

It would be great for people that have their own sites/blog related to Thailand that would benifit other users.

I'm guessing it's because Thaivisa is worried about a decrease in direct advertising if people were able to display links?

Would appreciate thoughts from thai visa admin :o

    Cheers!

  11. I do exactly the same thing as what your looking to do. I live here by choice, invoice a company in the UK on a monthly basis for work.

I wonder how much experience steveroma and friet have with running an IT business with Thai staff in Thailand as I disagree with some of their comments.

There is not a shortage of excellent Thai IT professionals in Bangkok... If you treat your staff well, and with respect, your staff will help you recruit new staff. From my experience, Thai's are also not that bothered working for a huge company - it's all down to the working environment and their fellow peers - those 2 factors are the most important things, even above money, from my own experience. Also don't be fooled that most good Thai programmers are freelancers - it takes a particular kind of person to be able to work as a freelancer - i.e - have a business sense as well as being good at coding - they are around, but not as many as you think.

I consider my success with Thai staff down to treating my staff well - I take them out to the cities best restaurants, I buy them fruit smoothies every day, I have a fridge stocked up with goodies that they can help themselves to, I give each staff 2 monitors, a nice desk and chair. I pay for their travel expenses. By treating them well, they spread the word and soon enough your a desired company to work for, either if you have 5 staff or 100 staff.

    Maybe I've just been lucky?

As for your questions (that haven't already been answered above):

    2. How well can we expect them to communicate in English ? Are there any cultural barriers that make communication more difficult ?

This is the down side - I speak okay Thai but I do have someone in the office who translates my specs just to make double sure they understand what is required.

    5. What salary levels are we looking at ? We are hoping to hire the correct candidates at 30,000 - 40,000 THB monthly.

My programmers all start on a 3 month probation at 18k, after 3 months when both parties are happy to continue the contract, I increase the salary to 22k, with double pay over time opportunities everyday (2 hours) and paid travel expenses, it works out at around 25k to 27k

Good luck - If you have any Q's, just let me know here or via PM.

  12. I was going to spare you 10 minutes of my time writing a detailed reply, until I noticed this sentance..

I'd love to get together offline and chat or PM. I haven't quite figured out how to do it on this forum yet, but my yahoo id is dsieg58 if you get a chance.

How the hel_l do you make serious money on-line if you can't even use a forum?

    Something smells fishy...
