  1. Tesco has the Western Digital media players. Some with hard drive, some without. I've got a few and they are pretty good. Can play pretty much any type of video.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Craig, this sounds like what I'm looking for, will take a look in Tesco after work tonight, thanks.

  2. OP, if you already have reservations regarding exchanging the pre-2011 50 pound notes in Pattaya, why don't you just tell your friend to exchange them for the newer version before leaving for LOS? Or why hasn't he thought of that? Rather curious......

Assuming the notes are genuine, I don't see a problem exchanging them at Bank Gold, Soi Rungland, just off Pattaya Tai and just east of 3rd Rd. They also tend to give a slightly better exchange rate than the more, "tourist" exchange booths towards the beach / central Pattaya.

  3. Does anyone know if there are shops locally where I can buy a Sumvision Cyclone Media Player (3TB), if not Sumvision then similar media player that is SATA compatible (not IDE)?

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Soi 1 opposite 'Art In Paradise' just off 2nd road. 190Baht - can't argue with that. I think it's called 'Big Fish'

    +1

Haven't been for a couple of years, but used to be very enjoyable. Sorry I wasn't sure which Soi it was on earlier.

  5. The one at the north end of 3rd Rd is supposed to be good, though I've still not managed to drag myself that far.

I quite like the one at the south end of 3rd Rd as it has whole fish.

For about 170-180B you get what you pay for, which I suppose is all anyone can reasonably ask. It would be interesting to see what sort of ingredients they could provide for perhaps 250B though.

Yes, for an extra 70 or 80 baht i'd imagine there would be a massive difference.............NOT!!

Why wouldn't you expect a massive / significant difference if the price was increased almost 50%?

  6. Since you're eating mainly western food once or twice a day, and given that you're annoyed enough by some of the practices these cafes and restaurants carry out very commonly that kill off your custom to start a thread on it, I'm guessing you must have visited an awful lot of different establishments by now?

Would you care to mention the names of the ones which you paricularly like, or are satisfied with, and the ones that don't cut the mustard for you, without naming and shaming of course?

  7. I do agree that for an unknown shooter they might be able to do a better job of appraising mental stability before allowing them access, but that is about all you can do if someone decides to kill himself at a shooting range.

How do you suggest they appraise the mental stability of tourists coming to the range?

I wonder if they notice a customer is drunk, if they will still let them handle a gun? My gut tells me they will.

    Yes they will.

A few years ago I used to visit Koh Larn fairly regularly with friends that would be over here visiting, normally we'd spend the majority of the day at the main beach (forget the name, where all the speedboats come in to) swimming, jet-skiing, eating, and drinking. Then on our way back to Pattaya we'd always have the speedboat skipper take us round the side of the island and wait for us there whilst we walked up to the shooting range (normally with a beer in hand).

There, we were able to hire any firearm available, and although we weren't falling about drunk must have smelt of alcohol to anyone who hadn't been drinking. Sometimes some easten Europeans would turn up absolutely slaughtered, and they were still allowed to use the firearms, this did worry me.

They also sell alcohol at many of the shooting ranges. This is not only in Thailand, but Cambodia and Viet Nam too.

  8. Not all riders of motorbikes here have licences nor have been taught the skills to avoid simple hazards like wet roads, roads slick with oil from fumes, other vehicle actions etc. and they often ride at speeds that are beyond their ability to control in all situations. Having excess weight from more than one passenger compounds those things... hope they are all OK.

Three young guys (about 20yr old the OP mentions) on one motocy involved in an accident at 5.30am, with no mention of any other vehicles involved, and there were no issues regarding inclement weather either if my memory serves. I would guess the simple hazard that should have been avoided was the bar / karaoke that they had just left. I could be wrong of course.

  9. His name is Sakhda and he's a very competent and fair mechanic. Used to work in the dealership garage for many years before he opened up his own garage at home. I got his details and the recommendation from TVF and I'm happy to pass it on.

    081-715-6819

He's in North Pattaya. He's even come to my house before on the dark side to have a look and lend a hand when I had some issues one time and refused to even take money for his help.

We've had him do service on our vehicle a few times now and he's always fair and does a good job.

he has been the subject of a favourable thread on TV before

    good guy!

    Thanks for the recommendations gents.

I have spoken to Khun Sakhda, and made an appointment for him to collect my car from my home (his suggestion) next Wednesday morning (subject to confirmation on Tuesday as he informs me he's very busy). This could work out well as in the OP I mentioned that there are a couple of other things that require looking at aswell as a service, a bit of rattling and vibration from wear and tear, which you would need to drive the car to diagnose properly I would believe (although I have a pretty good idea what the problems are). Additionally, he doesn't live that far from me (SSCC), so could be handy in the future too.

I'll let you know how things work out.

Timekeeper, thanks for the link to the older thread, many positive posts regarding the work of Khun Sakhda which is reassuring.

  10. I was hoping I could get a few recommedations regarding the above topic.

I know I could trawl through hundreds of posts on probably many threads on this forum and others too, but I'd prefer to receive up to date info / recommendations on the subject and not waste time going through all kinds of negative and off topic posts.

I'm looking for a reliable / reputable garage in the Pattaya South / Central / North area who can service and possibly fix a few minor other repairs to a Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4x4 Auto (120,000km service)? Travelling a little further isn't a problem either, the main point is that the service is carried out thoroughly!

Before anyone suggests going to Chevrolet, I would have done but for the following; initially I would have done but they have a two week waiting list which I can't really wait for. Other reasons, but not the main one, are I didn't mind paying main dealer (rip off) prices when the car was still under warranty, but as it's now seven years old there isn't anything to really gain from it. Also the service staff at Chevrolet have proved over the years that they aren't the most diligent, and on a few occasions I've had to take the car back to them for rework (when conveniently nobody can speak English, (I know I'm in Thailand so I should be speaking the language).

Cost is not a major concern, as I use my car to travel to and from work, and as such the majority of servicing / wear & tear costs are reimbursable, but will require a proper receipt, not a, "Fred in the shed" back street job.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

  11. Does anyone know whether Rennet is available in Thailand / Pattaya?

I've never seen it being sold here in town. Are you trying to make cottage cheese by any chance? We make it without rennet without any issues.

For sure it's available in Thailand as it comes from cows and they have cows here. I'm sure you can buy it from a dairy farm like chokchai.

    Mozzarella.

There are many different types and sources, including alternative sources of Rennet, was just wondering whether anyone had come across any here.

Rennet comes from the stomach of cows (all mammals actually). Yes, I have come across it here from dairy farms.

If you are looking for rennet from a certain animal other than cows then I don't know.

On a side note.. many times you can use another form of acid (citric acid)in cheese production instead of rennet.. like vinegar or lemon juice..

    Thank You for the reply.

I'm not getting into an argument / discussion as to where Rennet originates, whether it's calves / cows, cows / buffalos, etc. I would be interested however if you could clarify your two replies, whether you're sure you can buy it from a dairy farm, "like Chokchai" or yes you have come across it here from dairy farms? The reason I ask is that, "like Chokchai" sounds like an educated guess, whereas, "Yes, I have come across it here" implies a definate response.

Was the dairy farm, "Chokchai" where you came across it?

  12. Off topic post removed, Can we please at least try to answer the OPs question.

I am sure a lot of other people will also be interested in this topic.

We assume he is talking about Pattaya but maybe he can confirm that.

    OP, you may want to have a look at this link;

Xmas dinner is consistantly good value, and personally I think this year more so than other years even. Also, you can be sure of a festive atmosphere! You will probably need to book soon (as I have).

Looks good and priced pretty keen...just the dessert seems a little measly...only pudding and fresh fruits?

All you can eat Xmas dinner for 595 Baht, with Xmas pudding, custard, and fresh fruit. What more could you wish for, cheese board, dates, possibly pancakes, hot crossed buns, or an easter egg!! thumbsup.gif Come on, I think, "a little measly" is rather OTT.

Please let me know what your Xmas dinner is like elsewhere, and how much it cost.

    Seasons Greetings

  15. 400 baht, the problem is what?

because that excludes the doctors fee, medication etc,.It's for taking his fever, bloodpressure and size and weight.

For the sake of 400 Baht (just over 8 UK Pounds, or just under 13 US Dollars) is it overly extravagant to have, I presume your (your boy) Son's weight, Temperature, and Blood Pressure checked at a top hospital as a precaution? I don't think so, not unless that equates to too many bottles of Chang, I'm not trying to be disrespectful but all this talk on a forum regarding a pittance of money to have your Son looked at my competent doctors quite frankly amazes me! Would it really matter if it was 4000 Baht? Not to me I can assure you, and I certainly wouldn't be wasting time on an Internet forum discussing it!

In the OP you mention, "some kind of minor", well, diagnosis complete then!

Thank You for the suggestion of advise regarding eye doctors (opticians?), I'll give it a miss since my eyesight (as well as common sense) is fine.

As far as other currencies are concerned, I mentioned it for the sake of others who may not be as familiar with exchange rates, and to save them time figuring out just how little in terms of monies you value health.

Apologies if you don't like my way of thinking, but I'm obviously not the only one with similar thoughts.

    P.S. BKK-PTY has free parking!
