  1. Using the "Search" function has become a waste of time. You see the first word in each post, but have to open each post individuall to find out what it is about.

You can not easily scan someones posts to see what their tone is like and you have to open every post to find a specific one.

Please fix it so it is like it used to be with every post available to read without any more steps. :D

I agree. It is a total waste of time. :o

  2. Frankly, the Thai food can be very good in SF but I wouldn't travel there for Thai food and its doubtful a Bangkok person would be super impressed. There are much better options there.

I'm in agreement with Jing here. ..... For me, a must stop every time I'm in SF is the kitschy Sam Wo's at 813 Washington Street (between Grant Ave & Waverly Pl) in Chinatown. Always a lot of fun and ridiculously low prices.

Sam Wo's home of Edsel Wong (RIP) who always made it a place to remember. Food wasn't very good in my opinion (late 1960s to 1970s) but Edsel's presence always made it memorable, especially for newbies.

For Thai food, I like the Marnee Thai sites one on 9th ave and another on Irving I think.

  3. Looking for a company which does shampooing and Vacumming carpets.

Has any1 used a company before? If u did could u let me know pls. Moving into the new place on the 25th so i need the carpets cleaned :o

Don't really wanna fork out lots of cash just to get a Vax machine :D

Not a really big job thou the carpet is just abt 40 m/sq

Coit carpet cleaning used to be in Washington Square area and advertised in the UBC monthly TV schedule magazine. Not sure if they are still there or not.

  4. I seem to remember many of the Marriott's I've stayed at have their pillows listed for sale, along with many other items like towels, robes, etc. Called the JW and was told they don't sell them there, so was wondering if anyone has seen pillows available for purchase from other decent hotels in Bangkok with similar quality to what you find in Marriott JW's and Resorts.

Westin Hotel on Soi 19 and Suk sell their "Heavenly" pillows and bedding in their gift shop. I don't recall the price for pillows but they were not cheap.

  5. Hey BKKJohn

    Jai yen yen.

I don't know JFChandler but have read several of his reviews of other restaurants and am usually in complete agreement with him. I have never seen him criticize a restaurant unfairly or try to be nasty to another poster. I think he only wants to help and is trying to help you improve your product with his suggestions, not just talking to be ornery.

Your restaurant is still on my list of eateries to visit in Bangkok. Keep up the good work in bringing good western food to BKK!

  6. I recommend the Rose Garden to tourists who will have only a brief stay in Thailand and are short of tour time. It is extremely touristy but gives some overview of Thai culture (silk making, elephants, wedding ceremony, muay Thai fighting, sword fighting, ordination ceremony, etc.) Some visiting friends of mine went to Rose Garden recently and it fit their bill perfectly because they got to see/do things that they wanted to do in Thailand without traveling around the country (ie having picture on an elephant). If you have seen it once, you probably don't want to see it again.

Does anyone remember TIMLAND in the mid-1960s?? I am told that it was the predecessor to the Rose Garden. I enjoyed playing the Rose Garden golf course one time.

  7. One of the reasons I like the Emporium is because the clientele is less likely to have conversations on cell phones and chit-chats in the middle of the movie. Not saying it never happens but don't experience it often when I go mid-afternoon. Once, when someone started a cell phone conversation, a po'd Thai told them to leave the theater if they wanted to talk. They did.

  8. Tourists could be the harbinger of what is to follow: as Burma knows, the sanctions will follow if Thailand gives in to authoritarian gang wrongly named "PAD".

This is just that tourists are the first to boycott the place before bigger sanctions are introduced.

Let's see how that guy who is trying to rent out a 1BR condo for 60,000B per month goes. Real estate may be the next victim.

Boycott normally indicates a protest by people/group avoiding the product, service, country, etc. to coerce some kind of change. In Thailand's case I think the tourists are staying away solely out of personal safety fears.

I doubt that the US would impose any Burma-like sanctions on Thailand because of the PAD protests. Many Thais argue that the TRT/PPP etc have been proved corrupt in taking over the govt (see recent court cases and EC rulings) and that the TRT/PPP should step aside for new elections.

I agree that the two biggest victims in this protest will be anything tourist-related (right now) and real estate (esp hotels) in the not too distant future. I had some tourist friends visit Bangkok last week and they were buying things at Suan Lum Night Bazaar at 1/3 the asking prices without prolonged negotiations. I had not seen that situation recently.

  9. Yes I was rather taken aback when the salesperson in the condo tower project I bought into proudly stated to me that they do not allow Indians to buy their condos!...

This happens with people of several other races and countries of origin as well.

  10. Not really. My wife's friend got pregnant and went for an abortion at a clinic some where along sukhumvit and paid something like 4,000

Sorry but i find that very hard to beleive (I mean the ammount being 4000 Baht i presume?)

    Was between 4000-6000 baht.

Most likely done by PDA Organization in Bangkok. This is the same outfit that runs Cabbages and Condoms restaurant on Soi 12. More contact info here:

  11. I am sure that Rutnin Hosp. is the one the OP meant. It is easy to reach by taxi ( on Asok, about 500 meters off Sukhumvit). It is also close by the MRT and BTS.

Rutnin is a great eye hospital in my opinion. I have used it for eye exams only and they were very thorough and professional. I have also heard many compliments about Rutnin for serious eye problems and it is used by the queen so that should be a good endorsement of it.

He definitely should be seeing the eye doctor ASAP with a detached retina.

  12. I bought a pair of simple wooden adult crutches today at S-C Pharmacy on Rama 4 next to the Pan Pacific Hotel between Suriwwong/Silom. These crutches come in many different sizes and are further adjustable for the height of the crutch and the hand grip.

I had no idea what the cost would be but saw some priced on the internet about for $32 USD (about 1000B) so was expecting the costs to be in that neighborhood .

I was pleasantly surprised to buy a pair for 250B (less than $8 USD) and the pharmacy staff adjusted them to fit. They also had many other aids such as commodes, wheel chairs, walkers, etc for sale. :o

Good to know for that next sprained ankle or twisted knee.

  13. .

The first year the BTS opened, an American was goofing around one night and walking on the railing bar on the upper level and fell to the street and died. That is the only death I can recall.

I remember in 2001 because I seen it from my car (after the fact). Rajdamri skytrain at about 630am some Canadian who just arrived the day before fell from the upper level to the street below and died from massive head injuries. I seem to recall that from the cctv he entered the station and pulled himself up to sit on the railing and slipped right over. I remember looking for the story the next day in the Post. This still gives me shivers when I think about it.

I recall it was Radamri also but thought it was an American from Seattle. I could be wrong, and often am.

  14. If it's short, anybody care to type and post the news story here?

Or can anybody provide a link anywhere online? Google is giving me nothing.

I don't have the story but read it today in the Post. The article said they thought he was an American between age of 50-60 and that he was taken to a local hospital by "bystanders". They weren't sure of the circumstances of how he ended up on the ground and were investigating. Believe they said he was in a coma.

  15. I could be mistaken but think open till noon on Saturday and closed on Sunday.

I use it sometimes on weekend and I thought it was from 8:30 until 12:30 on Saturday but it is definitely closed on Sunday. Be safe and don't go later than noon on Saturday.

  16. There is a new Mexican Restaurant called Mamacita (A Taste of Mexico). It is in the Court Wing (not the main bldg) of the Royal President Hotel which is off Sukhumvit and down Soi 15 about 300 meters. You could also walk down Soi 19 from Suk, and take the first left (after 300 meters) and you would see it in the Royal Pres. Open from 11AM until 10PM and the owner's name is Bee.

It is a small place with some outside seating and about 15-20 seats inside (a/c). Prices for food seemed typical: Burrito 160b (set 190b), Nacho salad 150b, Fajita 160b, enchilada 160b, quesadilla 160b. Drink prices were soda 35b, Heineken beer 80b, 1 liter pitcher of margarita 500b.

I only tried the tortilla chips and homemade salsa which I liked. I saw an order of some Mex dish (Enchiladas I think) and it looked good. I plan to go back and try more items to see how it is.

BAHT BUS DRIVER HANDS IN OMANI‘S WALLET

A faithful taxi driver brought back a wallet of an Omani passenger to Pattaya police. The content in the wallet was worth 500,000 Baht.

......Mr. Essa was delighted and confirmed that everything was still in his bag and he rewarded Mr. Jakarin, the faithful taxi driver, with 2,000 Baht.

Reward of only 2000 baht?? Should have been 5,000 or 10,000 as the minimum.

He's also lucky the passenger turned it into the driver. Mr Essa is a very lucky man.
