  1. I bought my S101 from Eastern It.com Co.,Ltd located at Tukcom Pattaya.

They got a licenced Windows XP Home for me from a nearby shop (Bt3200)

When I bought the S101 it was the only one in the building so I was pleased that it was the 64GB SSD version. It came with free Linux

  2. I recently bought the E66 in preference to the E71 because the E66 looked better. :o

The E71 full qwerty is better for typing emails but still not good enough for my needs so I mainly the use the E series phone as a modem for my netbook when going online.

Does anyone use Opera Mini web browser on their E series.

I found it easier to use than the Nokia browser. Webpage text is displayed without the need to scroll sideways.

  3. Picked up the 64GB SSD version of the S101 from Tukcom in Pattaya.

Cost Bt 28700, no budging on price. Suspect they will be Bt20k within 6 mths.....

It came with Linux so licenced XP home cost me an extra Bt3200

Wifi and ethernet connectivity working well, havent tested Bluetooth yet.

Running Firefox-3 which has a nice zoom feature for text only. Makes viewing webpages much easier without having to scroll side to side.

Connected my 17" flat panel monitor to the VGA-out. The S101 will run both screens together but the resolution is down on the external monitor, but OK for my use.

Generally happy with it so far as a robust (SSD drive) ultra portable, only weighs 1kg, easy to carry on the bike.

Next purchase will probably be a Nokia E series phone so I can connect the S101 to the various 2-3G networks whilst motorcycling throughout Cambodia-Thailand and Laos.

  4. Just in case make sure that the E51 actually will work with the local 3G (Operating frequency - WCDMA 850/2100). If I remember well, AIS is working on 900.

Tested the E51 today at the Nokia office in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Connected to Camshins 3G network (900Mhz) no problem. Got the little 3G icon in top left of the screen, watched streaming video, and got 600kbps/300kbps from a broadband test site.

Nokia sites only list the E51 as WCDMA 850/2100, so not sure why it works so well on Camshins 900Mhz site. Perhaps there's an Asian version(900Mhz E51) that the Nokia websites don't list ?

What about cellcard, any idea what frequency they operate their 3G network on? They say following 3G phones are available in Cambodia:

I went thru several layers of customer service and was finally told Cellcard 3G use 800Mhz.

I questioned this and asked, do you mean 850Mhz, no, 800mhz is what he reckons. :o

Coverage for Cellcard is mainly just Phnom Penh, whereas Camshin is most major towns I believe .

  5. Just in case make sure that the E51 actually will work with the local 3G (Operating frequency - WCDMA 850/2100). If I remember well, AIS is working on 900.

I'm in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Camshin offer 3G here on the 900Mhz frequency.

Opposite the Camshin office is the Nokia (official) retail outlet. Nokia (khmer) sales guy reckons the E51 (WCDMA 850/2100) works no problem on Camshins 900Mhz network.

The E66 is 900/1800 and he reckons the E51 works just as good :o .

Very confusing and I'm wondering what works ok really means coming from the locals.

Is it the same as listening to a radio station transmiiting at 100 but having the radio tuned to 98. You can hear it but it could be better if you tuned in correctly.

Sounds like the E66 is a safer bet, plus I want it to work in Thailand and Laos. Anyone know the frequency of Laos 3G ?

  6. Thinking about getting the E51 for everyday use in Cambodia and as a notebook modem for the 3G network here. We have an official Nokia shop here that sells the E51 for $220 with one year warranty.

How does the E51 speed as a modem compare with high end $500+ 3G phones ?

  7. I bought one last week N10J , still playing with it and will post a report , so far very impressed , got it from Pattaya

    TL

Sorry to be off topic but did you notice if they were selling the Asus S101 10.2" netbook in Pattaya ?

Thinking of zipping over from Cambodia to pick one up as they dont sell them here.

  8. Found some more info on SSD size

It seems Thailand will get a better deal than some other countries wrt SSD size on the XP version of the S101. USA and Singapore only get 16gb ssd while Thailand gets 32gb with XP.

This new Eee netbook will be available in Bangkok from the beginning of November with a 32GB SSD and 1GB of RAM with Windows XP Home for 24,900 baht, according to ASUS Thailand country manager Pornthep Watchara-Amnouy....

....the S101 is just 1.8 cm thick and weighs one kilogramme, has a 10.2-inch screen and a keyboard that is 92 percent full-size.

Has anyone seen these in the shops yet and can confirm the above specs and price ?

  9. Looks like the big display touchscreens are coming out thick and fast

just reading about the Nokia 5800 due ~Dec 2008/early 09

Its got a 3.2" display but only weighs 108grams so it's more pocket friendly than the HTC HD at 146grms or the Iphone at 133grms

OS is symbian but presumably you will be able to view/edit excel-word etc by downloading the software from Nokia site.

Even though the review is positive I have very low expectations for a Symbian device. I'll come out and say it: I don't think Symbian can create a good touch interface experience. I just don't think it's possible. Symbian was designed in like 1980 and there's only so much you can do to software before you have to throw it out and redo it from scratch. Or course miracles happen... sometimes... it would be nice to be proven wrong on this one.

I think the main reason the iPhone touch screen works amazingly well - better than any keyboard navigation phone - is that the UI was designed for a touch screen from day one. It was a quantum leap in user interface design. It was so good that elements of the user experience are now finding their way into OS X.

    Hi Nikster

I think Nokia got it right with display size and weight, (3.2", 108grms)

Not sure if the HTC HD would be comfortable in the top pocket when I'm strolling on the beach. (Anotheruser, how do find the HD for pocketability ?)

I note your concerns re symbian and will watchout for that in further reviews.

Would you consider it worse than WM ?

  11. Hi bill, a few weeks ago I was quoted 3,210 Baht to have a licenced version of Windows XP installed on a new notebook , by the suppliers where the notebook was being sold .

    TL

    Hi TL

3210 Baht sounds reasonable, thanks for the info.

I'm in Cambodia so hopefully can get a similar deal over here.

When I bought my desktop here 7 years ago dodgy versions were installed as a matter of course. Too many problems with such versions now.

  12. TL

    Thanks for the links

It seems the XP version is 16GB SSD

32GB and 64GB models come with Linux.

If I bought the Linux version for the bigger SSD does anyone know roughly how much a computerstore in Thailand would charge to install a licenced version of XP ?

  13. There's a bunch of reviews here, the one from Pocketnow is very extensive with lots of pics

General consensus is HTC HD is the best WM touchscreen phone to date but doesnt match up to the Iphone as a multimedia device.

For business use one of the reviewers prefers the HTC Touch Pro due to the full slide-out qwerty keyboard but then we're entering brick territory at 165grms and its only a 2.8"display compared to HD's 3.8", 146grms.

    http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=porta...ews&id=1094

Paying $30 to get the keyboard to work in landscape mode across all programs is a bit rich considering the cost of the phone. No doubt HTC will bring out a new improved model in the near term

As someone mentioned before, give it 6-12 months and there will be plenty of big display pocket friendly smartphones to choose from.

  14. for the touch (or any WM smart phone) try the new Opera Mobile 9.5 beta.

It's a much nicer browsing experience over the stock browser.

I was using Opera actually. I am sorry that I neglected to add that in my post. There are a ton of things forgot to put in the original post.

    Anotheruser

Thanks for the HD review, will look fwd to updates.

I'm looking for a big display (non brick) WM 3G phone that gives me access to markets when on the move . Choice of WM mainly so I can edit/view my excel spreadsheets and sync to my PC.

Omnia seemed the best WM phone for my needs but HTC HD seems better again ?

  15. Yeah $800 is a bit more than what it sells for in Europe. I am not surprised. It would only be non USD prices however as the Touvh HD isn't being released in the USA.

Yep, I thinking more along the lines of USD800 was ~AUD800 a few months ago but is now ~AUD1230. Other Asia/Pacific currencies also weaker recently.

  16. ASUS EEEPC 1000 40GB SOLID STATE DRIVE

    http://eeepc.asus.com/global/product1000-spec.html

Is the above model available in Thailand (Pattaya ?)

If so, where, and how much ?

It only comes with Linux but I need windows. Do local retailers have licensed versions of Windows XP that they could install at a reasonable price ? ie, versions that will work with windows update ?

I'm thinking it would be suitable to carry on trips on the motorbike given the solid state drive. Good for emails, photo's, GPS tracking etc when on the move.

    Hi Bill .

may be email the guy's below , you never know ....

    hope they can help :o

Thanks for the links Mumbo Jumbo

Apparently Asus are releasing a slimmer version of the Eee Pc 1000 called the S101

    Might wait for that

  18. Since you can get 16 GB memory cards, the low internal memory on the HD should not be a problem.

Also there is the Sony Xperia X1 which is said to be available in Thailand in about a months time, it has the same screen resolution as the HD and also a slide out keyboard.

You might have a look at Omnia which has a generous internal memory (2 versions 8GB and 16GB) and also have a memory card slot if you need more.

I do have an Omnia myself, which i am fairly satisfied with, i especially like the compact size and that it basically have it all inc. a 5MP camera with flash.

Yeah, the Omnia was my 1st choice and I was just waiting for a legit seller with warranty to offer them in Cambodia or I'd pick one up on my next visit to Thailand.

However, reading the specs on the HD, it seems to beat the Omnia in every area except pocketability.

What negatives, if any, have you found with the Omnia ?
