  1. Italian food is like any other "you like it or you don't" but when you get places Like "le coq d'or" advertising food at outrageous prices I wouldn't be seen dead in one of them.

Where do they think they are "downtown Paree, New York, Rome, Milan or wot"

5,000.00 and 6,000.00 baht for a plate of food, they can take a F/F

You can go to places like Pun Pun Restaurant (and others) and get a well cooked nourishing meal for 200.00 baht. OK the ambience might not be quite the same (Pun Pun's is far and away better) maybe Pun Pun doesn't have a pick up / take home limousine but shyt this is at best a 3rd world country (well isn't it?)

But you get these folk who think that they have to show their "supposed" wealth and just throw money away for what is really no more than crap food.

Italians!, put them in the same basket as the majority of French folk (not all I would hasten to say)

What has Italy done for the world other than the so called discovery or "pizza"

    SFA...

Thank you for all great information/recommendation. Without knowing all street names, I am going to look for those restaurants on Chiang Mai map. Thank you again.

  2. We would like to try one Italian restaurant in Chiang Mai while we are visiting there out of Phuket. We saw a few last time we were there and obviously could not tell which one is worth try. We would like to have lots of variety of pasta dishes with home made pasta. What do you think ?

  3. We just bought tickets to visit Chang Mai from Phuket. This is our 2nd year to be...very much looking forward to be back. Now We are looking for place we can buy big quantities of fire balloons. Is there anyone know where to go ? Fire balloon in Phuket is not cheap ! Thank you for your help.

If you drive along the old Chiang Mai - Lamphun Rd and turn left just after the Gawilla Army barracks (where the big tree forms the intersection) you come to the Chiengmai Gymkhana Golf club on Ratutit Rd. If you continue past the entrance and go straight where the temple is on the left (instead of continuing round the corner towards the Railway station) and along the perimeter of the golf course you come to the area where the home-industry shops that are making these things are all located.

A little further along this soi is the Juniper Tree resort and about 100 metres past that you will see the first of the shops that makes and sells the Fire-lanterns. This area has about a dozen such shops. Most of the web-sites that say they manufacture them actually buy them here.

The web-site for Juniper tree resort probably has a map on it.

If you can't find that area, some have retail outlets on old Chiang Mai-Lamphun Rd in Nong Hoi Market opposite Holiday Inn Hotel.

Thank you for all informaiton, everybody. I will try to locate them.

  5. Me & my husband decided to take a short holiday after very, very long time (= too many years) not taking any holidays to Chiang Mai and just got back from it.

We have been living in Phuket over ten years and must say, Chiang Mai was quite different from Phuket for lots of things. May be because we did not know....it was quite good to be there and we try to go back there within a year, though we should study more before heading up there again.

So question to people from Chiang Mai, where do you find one of those "REAL" local pot food places/restaurants where it's open for dinner time ? And finally towards to the end of our holiday, we located a restaurant to serve Kao Soi some where away from center of Chiang Mai. Is that so hard to find Kao Soi restaurant in mid town ? Assuming we will be staying some where inside/near gate or Night bazaar area.... we really liked Kao Soi, but very hard to find in Phuket.

If some one can teach us how/where to find them, very much appreciated...just to remember we have been living in Phuket very long time, so we are NOT seeking farang type Thai food restaurants. Thank you.

  6. was reading somewhere that tesco is planning to open an express store in chalong??

    any news about this?

    thnks a lot

I thought I read it was going to be on Chaofa Road somewhere. Though the other day we were told by a local that they were building one halfway along Wiset Road between Chalong and Rawai Beach - though I've not read about this anywhere. Be a shame for all the local minimarts round Rawai area. Anyone got the word on this.
