This place is fascinating, beautiful arts and crafts and textile displays. Comfortable, classy reading room, Cool and calm. A delightful place to spen several hours.

No need at Boston consul. Seems to be mostly dependent on who's issuing the visa.

Firstly if getting a retirement (non immigrant O-A) the money can be in your home country until/if you want to extend at the end of a year at immigration in Thailand. You get such a visa from Thai Consulate in your home/residence country.

To open an account here requires finding the right branch (someone knowing procedures) and expect they would accept a simple letter that you have your Embassy notarize. Requirements vary by both bank and branch managers. But you can open an account on a tourist visa at some.

Is being unable to open a bank account in Tland a new thing? I've had accounts at two branches of Kbank and am only here on two tourist visas every year.

Do you live in Thailand or just travel there? If you live in US, you might try local banks. My husband and I travel in Thailand at least 4 mos/yr and use a bank in Maine (Bangor Savings) that pays any and all ATM and foreign exchange fees.

Bites look like tiny ant bites that are hot, itchy, last a long time. Hard to figure out because they are almost too small to be seen. Can get cortisone cream at pharmacy plus atarax 25, an antihistamine that works great for me.

Not to mention airbrushing and photoshopping.

I am also interested in this - have 8.1 and still using revo and cc.

The Beach was an awful film imo, but the book was excellent.

Not sure about Canada, but I know a Thai who has a 10-yr visa for US.

Where you have to cycle by parked cars, be careful of car door opening into your path. Also, be careful at intersections along the boat where folks turning left will sometimes cut you off. Had my first accident that way last winter after using a bike for 11 years. The driver who hit me had insurance and everything was paid for ((30,000 baht limit) while still there but still having issues at home.

I've ridden many times from Bo Sang into town and have never had an issue with traffic aside from smog. The biggest safety concern is with vehicles parking in the motorbike/bicycle lane, forcing you to merge right into traffic.

Check out your local banks at home. We have found one that in Maine that refunds usage fees like the 150Baht at AtMs plus no foreign exchange fee. Sometimes credit unions offer better benefits like this than regular banks. Just shop around in whatever city you live in.

I doubt you'll have much luck at that price. Seems the used English book market is fairly limited in Bangkok. I go to Dasa.

If they don't have something I'm aching for I hit Kinokuniya. All new books and pricey, but a great store.

Take a trip to Chiang Mai - tons of great second hand bookstores on every imaginable topic, but for under 100 baht, mostly paperback novels.

Wisdom, yes, plus Kwakwaka'wakw nation (in Canada) believe hearing an owl foretells imminent death. A good book is "I Heard the Owl Call My Name."

I think these FF air miles plans are pretty much all the same now. A " free" roundtrip long haul flight ends up costing you $300.00 to $500.00 for taxes and fuel surcharges, which is still a OK good deal IMHO if you got the miles and you're flying from North America to Thailand for a vacation.

Anyone know of a FF air miles plan that is actually 100% free?

My husband and I flew RT from BOS to CNX for 65,000 miles each with UA, Nov-Feb. Fees and surcharges were only $65 each.

I'd say that's a pretty good deal.

The guidebook, "helpful Hints for Getting Settled in Chiang Mai" mentions a health food store called Imboon Supermarket which "specializes in health foods and vegetarian supplies." They give the address of 188/1-3 Muang Samut Road. I don't know about this because I haven't been but the guidebook in general is good. Any one been there and would like to comment?

I'm not sold on Kasem store, at least the one on Nimmanhemin Road. I went there about 2 weeks ago and I was the only person in the store for the 10 minutes I was there; their supply seemed to be "mom and pop" store stuff, nothing special at all. Three clerks all were talking with each other since they had nothing to do. Not a good sign. Given the likely low turnover, I would be worried about buying from them.

The Kasem's near Wararot is always busy, great selection, great employees.

You might want to check with George [uG on the forum] at Gecko Books as I think he has a database of books at his main store which lists the books at all his stores it might help to pinpoint some books and save you a trip to some of his other stores.

You can actually search gecko books online - it will tell you which branch has the book you want. But check out non-gecko bookstores, too!

Not a Ferang in sight! (most of the year) 20 minutes drive to the town.

Surrounded by rice fields and mountains on the outskirts of little farming village, suits me just fine.

Lamphun is wonderful - a 5 baht trainride to Chiang Mai if I want western food or a bookstore.
