  1. Seems to me like a seriously fecked up thread this one. I get the feeling theres some other sleazy underlying factor why somebody would present a question like this to the board. Just stick with people your own age is my advice and you won't go far wrong.

Ok, now imagine you have a 16 year old son. Are we now allowed to continue the discussion? Thank you so much.

Just adds to the common stigma that all of us that live in LOS are all perverts.

Non perverts aren't allowed to discuss these things? Oh I see.

  2. i tend to agree with that. it enables "travellers" to be able to spend months in a country moving around in a little bubble without ever having to speak or interact with a local of that country.

Ah, as opposed to..... package tourism? Tourism of the Beach Road-Second Road loop kind?

    They interact more then?

Come on we're talking about tourism; and the Lonely Planet demographic I think has its fair share of local interaction, likely more than any other group you'd care to mention. Or at least Lonely Planet offers people the information to go out and explore for themselves. More so than package tour bus tourists, surely.

Of course they're not at the high & mightly level of interaction and local understanding of us expats, but hey, who could know more about Thailand than we do. Heck we know more than most Thais do, don't we? :o

  3. Lonely Planet and the Lonely Planet Zombies who consider this silly book to be the Bible of travel are responsible for ruining many a formerly fine place. If it's in the Lonely Planet, it's on the way to being ruined by mass tourism, backpackers and people who don't have the talent to search for interesting places on their own.

Well, that's simply incorrect. A huge chunk of the guide is about North-Eastern Thailand, and in great detail. Show me where the mass tourism is there? South just the same, conscientious listing of bus and ferry time tables around Nakhon Si Thammarat.. Backpackers or tourists anyone? People just go for the beach areas, as well as places they consider cool & 'vibey', like Pai or Vang Vieng or Ko Pangan. That sets the stage for someone to open a more up-market resort, and tourism continues to develop from there.

The guy who writes it lives in Chiang Mai and some of his recommendations leave a lot to be desired. Also, excellent places are left out.

You have to take the shelf-life of your recommendation into account. Like if you recommend something on this forum then some people may visit the place, but 2 weeks later nobody will ever see it again. When you have to write something in a book in print that will be the 'current edition' for at least 2 years (so say 3 years from the time you write it taking production time into account) then you cannot list all the places that are currenlty 'hot', because chances are half of them will have closed or changed owners one year down the line. That's why some of the places listed can seem a bit stale; at least they're still around!

It says to drink drinks without ice for God's sake!

Where does it say that? From memory, it says to be careful with shaved ice, the stuff that comes from the big blocks that are sitting unprotected in trucks or on the pavement. It says that the tube ice is usually safe. I can't fault that recommendation, especially as a guide book you want to err on the side of caution when it comes to health. And picking up a nasty bug can easily ruin a short holiday.

  4. It was a protectionist / false nationalist plot. His company, his sale. Thailand to this day does not have tax on selling shares, so if anyone thought that should change then the generals had ample chance, but obviously declined.

I for one would be happy to see Thaksin become PM again, though he's probably quite through with Thai politics and I can't blame him.

BTW, the consensus on the airline forums seems to be that there's nothing wrong attempting to land in crosswind like this, that's quite standard really, though at the last moment there was a big gust of wind that threw the plane off-balance, then the pilot was lucky/skillful to recover from that and go around. Some also say he should have gone around earlier than he did, but it's tough to call for sure. The plane landed safely on a different runway minutes later. That runway was closed for the day after that.

Plane did actually hit the ground with the left wing and damanged the left winglet / wingcover. No major structural damage though.

  6. First of all, there's a difference between being "stingy" [which I believe is implied by 'cheap charlie' though I'm not very familiar with bar slang so someone please correct me] and "just not having wads of money to throw around for fun".

Very rich people can be stingy.

Very poor people can be quite generous, given the circumstance, and you need not look further than many, many locals in Chiang Mai to see evidence of that.

Also, sometimes choosing a cheaper option for something can be good to not lose your connection with 'the common life' in Chiang Mai, which in my case was what attracted me to Thailand in the first place. Too many people end up spending more and more and become less and less in touch with their surroundings, then sometimes even become bitter even though they have loads of money to spend, but no happiness to buy.

  7. I wouldn't be overly worried about that. As a city it's much bigger so tourism in any form won't have the same overpowering strangle-hold on everything like in Pattaya. And secondly, if anything I see a downturn in nightlife for tourists.. People just don't seem to do nightlife in Chiang Mai.

  8. I think they're super friendly at Mad Dog. I don't know Nick but his staff sure are friendly, polite and cheerful. Real gems. (I didn't vote for the place because of the limited menu, but nothing wrong with the staff attitude. And the same set of people has been there for a long time, that's also a very good sign. )

  9. All of the above seems to deal with prostitution, though.

In those cases the law is 18 years old if I read correctly. However as prostitutes will come from a background where family isn't likely to cause a fuss over the act. She's a prostitute, after all.

However in cases where the girl, or boy, is just about any age but from a well do to family, the law might be the least of your concerns. For sure her family could stir a fuss, and allege all kinds of things.
