  1. The red shirts are not terrorists, they are peaceful protesters. Governments use the word terrorists as an excuse to kill innocent people. Its very irresponsible of some posters coming on here labeling these ordinary people as terrorists. I think posters on here would prefer Thailand to be ruled more like Burma.

    Hmmm

    1. Kidnapping of CAT CEO

    2. Kidnapping of high ranked police officer

    3. Kidnapping or army train with men and weapons

    4. Hostile take over of the city.

    5. Violent threats to storm shopping malls

    6. Grenades causing death

    7. Weapons stock piling

    8. Destruction of public property

    9. Threats of violence and more bombs and grenades.

You are right, this is not terrorism this is would be what? patriotism!

    10. Breached the Parliament building, causing MPs to be airlifted out.

    11. Incitement to Riot

  2. Something so obvious to us who have been here awhile, but I've told women back in the U.S. that Thai women pursue lightening their skin VERY seriously.

Almost every skin product has whitener, even men's. Women back home bask in the sun to get a tan, women here wear hats, jackets, gloves, anything to shield themselves from the sun. I explained why dark skin is not desired, then they could understand (sorta).

Something else very surprising to women back home: tampons are not used here, at least by 99% of women I would guess. I never see them in the stores.

  3. (If there is a thread somewhere which already goes into this subject in depth, please advise)

Often I am asked by my friends and family about the differences between living in Thailand versus back home (in my case the U.S.). As you know, there are so many ways Thai culture, habits, traditions, etc are different. I started a list. Maybe it would be of interest for future readers for us to list more here: (please no bashing)

    Thais:

    Hate confrontation

    Rarely display anger publicly

Eat mostly using a large spoon, with a fork used mostly for guiding or separating (or perhaps chop sticks)

Often do not even own a plain table/dinner knife

Never blow their nose in public

    Never use handkerchiefs

Surprisingly often pick their noses in the presence of others

Are for the most part usually very polite to others

Rarely have body odor (in my experience)

Often take 3-4 showers per day due to the heat

    Women love the TV soaps

Salt and pepper shakers rarely seen here

    Usually don't have a toaster

Like to go to the market to buy fresh food every day, sometimes every meal

Rarely store leftovers in the refrigerator - leave out covered with a dish and eaten the next day

Typically are lousy drivers using minimal safety prevention

Men LOVE their beer, often drinking every night with neighbors/friends

Sincerely believe in and fear ghosts

    Please add your observations !

  4. The anti-government troublemakers (Red, Black, rogue, whatever) must be so disappointed now. With the Army saying no force will be used and with talks underway, their excuse for planning/executing acts like bombing fuel depots, etc, is no longer valid. And they were so looking forward to reading about high victim counts. Bastards.

  5. Dispersal or not, I am hoping the recent show of support for the PM is making him reconsider his stance, and not to give in yet. I just hate to see the mob force him to step down before the end of the year. That remains the best compromise.

But the Democrat party will be disolved by the end of the year so what is your point?

I'm not sure what the timetable is for the actual dissolution to be complete per the EC's ruling, I thought I read it would take some number of months. But irrespective of that, my point is I don't want the mob to win anything beyond Abhisit's original offer of year-end or an EC-related timetable.

  6. the best way to meet thai women is just go to thailand and meet them in person wherever..however...meeting them on the internet is an alternative for those that have never been there yet and want to have someone waiting for them when they arrive, plain and simple

Having a woman waiting here for you is dangerous for many of us. Even if she is only somewhat appealing to you, she quickly gets her hooks into you (good sex, treating you like a king: cutting your toe nails, ear and nose hair, etc. :) ). Then the idea of getting to know a different woman who may be a better fit becomes encumbered with feeling of guilt. The longer you stay with her, the more the difficulty until you can become trapped. Happens a lot. That's why many guys returning here after a visit don't return to the same woman, an easy though arguably cowardly escape from a relationship you know you don't want long term. BTDT :D

Want to have a woman waiting for you at the airport? Never mind. Take a taxi to Pattaya or stay in BKK and go anywhere. Look for a smile and that woman is interested. No matter how unattractive or fat you may be, very attractive (young if you prefer) women will be interested in you. Have a pleasant expression, don't act like a snob or a jerk, and a decent women will not be quickly turned off.

Don't think the internet is needed for you to meet a woman here! It isn't! It is hard for many of us who are not given a second glance by a woman back in the west to understand this, but it is true. Surprising to the newbie here, but 100% true.

  7. I am hoping against hope for some accountability for outright acts of lawlessness. Such as the breach of the Parliament building - PMs evacuated by air lift - give me a f@cking break! And the orders to stop the train, buses and hold soldiers in Khon Kaen to mention just two, not to mention INCITEMENT TO RIOT!

There needs to be JAIL TIME for some Red leaders! Compare it to a snowball's chance. They'll insist on immunity and will get it.

  8. Going to bed, very interesting day. Good news about possible end to the violence, but bad news the mob prevailed in this manner, not good for Thailand. Also sad Abhisit's days are numbered, I believe he could have accomplished much for all Thais given more time and cooperation, and greatly improve the country's international standing. Hopefully he will return to be PM once again. Just my opinions, as you have yours. Good thread. G'nite.

  9. Good offer from the Reds.

    <snip>

A good offer, it came after foreign Diplomats visited the Reds area and discussed with them.

Obviously the diplomats did not see any terrorists, perhaps lots of old people and children but not anything else ??

Well done the Reds for listening to the Diplomats and making a good offer.

Now its up to Abhisit to accept it, or spit in the face of the people once more.

I would say this is a good "next" offer. Not another dam_n ultimatum. My guess is the Diplomats basically got through to the Reds that they needed to be open to reasonable proposals or this thing will get so nasty everybody will be losers.

If they can accept 90 or perhaps 60 days, this can all end now. Abhisit would be conceding a lot (I know you don't agree). I believe he knows he has been whipped in this battle and won't win.

  10. I've got this (strange) feeling now. With the Army saying no force will be used to disperse, it took all the air out of the sails of fury. Now, the Reds say they will accept 30 days and want to negotiate tonight. A huge weight feels lifted.

I think it may all be over soon -- peacefully -- anybody else feel this way?

  11. <snip>

The RED are so stupid & unimaginative; <snip>

(unsure if you are being facetious or not, doesn't matter - my reply fits either way)

Actually ct I think their leaders have outsmarted the government almost every step of the way for the past 6 weeks.

Crude maybe, but some crafty people are running this thing for the Reds, as evidenced by the choice pick of the 3 Army officers attacked (the Colonel killed) on the 10th and its ramifications on the upcoming Army leadership reshuffle.

Now Army says no force will be used to disperse the protesters -- I thought this was a promise (to disperse). See? Red's outsmarted the gov't and Army again. They are winning. I think they will get all they want or very close to it.

  13. Everybody realize having a 3G modem which connects does not mean you are running on a 3G signal. As I stated above, it could be a 2G signal therefore not giving you the speed you are expecting. I don't believe all modems have an indicator (colored LED or whatever) like mine does which displays the actual signal type, in which case you may need to call their call center to inquire if 3G is available in your location.

  14. A few days ago I bought as AIS 3G Aircard (Huawei E1552) after having problems with my old Edge (from go3G) working on my new pc under Windows 7.

The Aircard works fine here in Lopburi, but according to the modem light color (green instead of blue), it is only connecting at 2G. I heard from a member only Chiang Mai has AIS 3G, Bangkok only 2G presently. Accompanying control software very good. Manual: so so.

Please post your findings so we all can benefit. I have only used AIS, not the other service providers.

  15. These red shirts are terrorists. Bombing their fellow countrymen should not be tolerated in any way, how could any constitution protect such actions? Thailand's Mai Bphen Rai stance on law is going to be it's own undoing. I don't think this is just another protest and back to business as normal. The world has evolved a lot since the massacres of the past, with communication and global competition now at play there are more elements to consider. Also I don't believe there was ever someone as well funded and powerful as Thaksin behind the scenes before. We all smile at Thailand's charming incompetence when it's something silly like an elephant taking a dump on Sukhumwit but there is a dark side to an ability to institute law and order as well. Thailand is slipping further into violence and disorder undoing decades of progress.

Thailand's root problem is the government cannot assure law and order, period. An Army with a mind of its own, police with minds of their own. No PM of any political persuasion is able to maintain order without control of forces required to do so. The fundamental problem IMO.
