  1. I do not smoke, but I would like to grow a few tobacco plants to spread around ther base of trees and vegetable beds as insecticide. Any idea where/how to find seeds/seedlings? I have ask local nurseries here in Chiang Mai and nobody seems to know.

  2. Be aware that there are many dialects within a generally called kham muang. Speakers in Pusang have different expressions than in nearby Lampang, then Chiang Mai and Nan speakers will have very different words for the same thing. There are as many dialects in the North as there are cities...

  3. I hope there were no more injuries. The last time this happened about 50 people were burned to death in their cars during peak hour traffic after a gas tanker rushed through a right turn. I don't know if any justice was meted out in this case. All the burnt out cars were parked on a street nearby for quite some time afterwards.

Yikes... when and where did that happen? I don't have any recollection of that kind of incident.

    Around 1992...

  4. Duh! How do sunglasses stop eyes from becoming irritated?

Duh! If you don't understand how wearing glasses prevents particles from getting into your eyes. Honestly!

For the dumb ones: sunglasses on motosai !

  5. Is it flooding in Hang dong too? Just like to know if I can go home (Bor Sang) today.

Hangdong (road) lies 10-11 meters above the bank level of the Mae Ping. There is no way the water could reach it....

The only possible flooding could come from overflowing of little brooks or clogged gates of a canal, and therefore it could only be very localized.

  6. Normally once the centre of a palm has gone for any reason it is doomed

Normally, but not always: I have had palm resurrection after loosing all leaves and even new centre leaf. Try stuffing the top part of the tree with tobacco leaves or residue: it act as a perfect insect repellent. I have seen rice farmers spreading tobacco residue at the time of planting and it seems to keep all bugs away. I have been told that too by farmers in India. I am searching now for tobacco seeds or small plants, but have no idea where to find any here around C.Mai. Anyone can help?

  7. if it was very expensive it might have been stolen from some thai museum or temple and you gf recognises it.

why bringing thai art from the uk to thailand? you had run a risk of confiscation (and prosecution)

I brought it here as I now live here. Not such a hard thing to understand. I also stated it was declared to Thai customs and they let it in no problem and as far as I am aware you only need a license to export Buddha images not import them ? Maybe somebody can clarify ?

Do people actually read posts before posting ?

You got a licence because your piece is of no importance: Not stolen from a temple, not broken off a whole statue: it is a brand new handicraft, this can be seen kilometers away (did not even need to enlarge your jpgs). It has no other value than the bronze (or perhaps brass) value per weight + workmanship, I would say 2,000 bahts from the wholeseller. Sorry for disappointment if any.

Thais do not like to see Buddha in parts, they worship the whole figure, thus perhaps your madam reaction.

  8. Sorry, not hijacking the thread.....I wonder if you guys with Polynesian connections have seen my Kava thread in the Farming forum?

I have strong connections with Fiji and Tuvalu.

I would bet my bottom dollar that the further south you go, the more breadfruit you will find.

I used to have a few different types of breadfruit, and when I get to Thailand, I too, would like to have some.

Varieties. Yes, I too would wonder what types {as there are a few} might thrive well here. I'll check on your thread. Thanks.

It is called sakey in Thai. I have planted a tree in my garden (still too young for fruits) here in Chiang Mai, and I have seen them all around the province. How do you eat the fruit? Just peel its skin? what is inside? never has some before, but i like the shape of the leaves.

  9. It is allowed to import seeds into Thailand (in small quantities for your personnal use) and you don't have to hide, smuggle them or declare anything. Even small plants (except restricted species, ask the list to the customs department). The only restriction being that they should not come with soil (!!), but being Thailand, a little soil (nit noi, mai pen rai) around the roots is OK.

I did shipped seeds from Oregon (seedrack.com) and was not asked for duty fees or had to leave them for a quarantine period. I did pass some young plants in a transparent plastic container through the airport coming from abroad and was not even inspected, although the officers clearly saw what I was carrying.
