I heard a rumour that Ryanair are going to start charging 5 pounds to use the overhead lockers. I wonder if that will catch on.

Already happening. As of yesterday, unless you pay for Priority Boarding, your case is taken off you at the gate and placed into the hold (free of charge).  You can still take on a small (handbag/laptop sized) bag to go under the seat in front of you.

  2. Thanks to everyone for the updates.  It's nice to see at least SOME progress at this long overdue development!  It looks better than it has been for the last couple of years, though whether they will ever get around to building Phase II (where I bought) seems very doubtful at the moment.

I would be interested in any support or other group for those who have bought here - please contact me via PM for my email.

I have also formed a closed Facebook group for those who have bought a unit(s) here, again, send me a PM with your email and I will add you to the group.  Hopefully we can discuss things more privately there.

  3. Not sure how many bags you are travelling with, but luggage trolleys are available by the baggage carousels. They are the fairly standard airport ones, and will easily take 2-3 large cases.

From the exit after Thai Customs it's a 2-3 hundred yards/metres walk to the meeting point at Door 3, IIRC there is a distance countdown every 50 metres or so on the ceiling-mounted signs. Shortly before you get to the actual Meeting Point at Door 3 you will start to see hordes of limo and taxi drivers standing to both sides of the walkway holding up names. I use a limo service regularly without any issues. If all of the "unofficial" taxis and limos had been excluded from picking up in the terminal, the ensuing chaos would have made the world news, not to mention hundreds of forum posts on TV!

Edited to add: Assuming that you are carrying a mobile and do not want to pay roaming charges, there are plenty of mobile service provider companies willing to sel you a Thai SIM card with stands between the exit into the terminal and Door 3, in the event that you cannot find your driver.

  4. Hi folks,

I will shortly be visiting Pattaya for a month or so, wondering if anyone has up to date info on the best option for me as a smartphone & iPad user, wanting to use mainly data (maybe 3-5GB/month), with occasional local calls/texts?

I can use the smartphone as a wifi hotspot, so would probably only need the one microsim, but wondering what's best in terms of coverage/pricing at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any info. :)

  5. Just love the discipline instilled in the honour guard. Aren't they taught eyes front and not to look at the inspection party? You look through them, not at them. Guess a photo op was passing by and the family wouldn't recognise me unless I turned my head.

Although 'eyes front' is the way that the British do it, and possibly the US and doubtless several others, in many nations the drill is to follow the VIP/Inspection Party along the front rank by turning the head and eyes towards them as a mark of respect. I've seen the Chinese do it, not sure if it's a purely Asian thing though, But I suspect these guys were doing what they had been taught, Even Thailand must have it's share of RSMs! smile.png

Possible but they kept their eyes front in this one with Obama.

True, but there is probably a subtle difference between a 'red carpet lining party' and a formal 'guard of honour' which the VIP is inspecting. Also, in the Obama clip they are all saluting by hand rather than with rifles - if they moved their head and eyes round to follow him as he walked along their hats would be knocked off and rolling around. Amusing for onlookers perhaps, but hardly smart! laugh.png

  7. Probably ISS planets track in same plane and slowly. ISS orbits Earth 16 times every day and currently would be lowish down to the East. Color change is due to atmospheric conditions. See @Cmdr_Hadfield on Twitter

It's not the ISS. The ISS is only visible, as a very bright dot, moving across the sky apparently faster than a high-flying aircraft, for a maximum of around 25 minutes horizon to horizon. As its visibility depends on reflected sunlight, it's only visible during the couple of hours either side of sunrise/sunset. It's pretty much unmistakeable for any astronomical object and it will never appear as stationary or slow-moving.

And Chris Hadfield left the ISS a month or so ago and is back on earth. Though he still tweets occasionally, it's not from space. :)

As someone above said, if you have an Android phone or tablet, try the Google Sky Map app, point your phone at the object and see what it says.

  8. According to Mr. Matthew Driver, president for Southeast Asia at MasterCard Inc., the ranking is based on the number of international visitor arrivals and their spending, exclusive of airfare, in each of the 132 destination cities.

So it's the destination where more people use their Mastercard the most.

Can someone explain to me how that makes BKK the "World's Best Destination" for anyone other than Mastercard? blink.png

  9. ... Rt. Hon.Wiiliam Hauge, First Secretary of State, and Foreign Minister who was once leader of the Tory Party and Prime Minister of England...

No. No he wasn't. William Hauge has never been Prime Minister of England, nor has he been Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Nor anywhere else. And neither has William Hague! wink.png

  10. I was also there last week and I would take the 'March 2013' completion with a barrel of salt. There has been little significant progress that I can see since my previous visit in December 2011, and as others have said, there are currently no workers on site. Building A is just about complete and some basic fitting out has been done, B & C are probably watertight but not fitted out - they are used for storage, and buildings D1 and D2 are far from complete - D2 is still little more than a concrete shell.

The contacts given on site are now:

    Sales Manager - Mr Trent 038 303 871 4

    Project Manager - Mr Barry 038 303 881 2

    or

    Khun Aor (same number)
