Well, I take it all with a grain of salt...
We live a 100 km's east of Roi-Et and in our village the local gossip goes that I'm at least
10 times wealthier than I really am.
A couple of years ago a farang friend of mine died and his wife proclaimed that he left her
10M baht. He died in the cheapest hospital you can find because he could not afford better
care. He ran out of money...
What people say and what really is the truth are (in Thailand) two completely different things.
Like I said, I take it all with a grain of salt.

It wasn't the power outage that killed my Mac Pro, it was the surge that fried a main board as soon as the power returned.

All my Mac's (mini, iMac, MacPro) are behind a Ups.
Learned this lesson the hard way, like you...

Since 3,5 years we live in a small farmers village in the mountains 50km from Mukdahan. And yes, Ban Farang is here known too, the biggest and nicest house of the village.
Nice and friendly people and no jealousy (as I know of). Never thought I would be able to live in such a remote place, I nicknamed it Ban Boring but over time I started to love the place.
Where I escaped to Bangkok on regular basis I now just want to avoid crowded places like that. Nature, friendly people, freedom, nice climate and a steady relationship for over 12 years, life couldn't be better. Home finally!
Of course there are disadvantages; I have to travel regularly across the country to get my cheese, salami, canned veggies and so on. But that does not really bother me.
And for pizza (I love a nice Italian pizza), Pizza Company isn't really appealing to me, neither does KFC so I'm ok without it.
In a radius of 50km there are some farangs to be found but till now none of my liking.
I have not gone native, hardly speak the local lingo (too old for that I think) but I like to think that I'm well accepted in our village. It's the life I have always dreamed of.

Hi All,
I live in Thailand (retired) and leaving soon for a 3 weeks holiday to Europe to visit my kids.
Upon returning I would like to stuff my suitcase with all kinds of groceries I can't get here.
Think about peanut butter, stuff to cook Italian & Chinese food, special cake mixes,
canned vegetables etc etc.
Would that be a problem when I pass customs in Bangkok?

A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich.
The barman looks at him and says, "Hang on! You're a duck."
"I see your eyes are working," replies the duck.
"And you can talk!" exclaims the barman.
"I see your ears are working, too," says the duck. "Now if you
don't mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?"
"Certainly, sorry about that," says the barman as he pulls the
duck's pint. "It's just we don't get many ducks in this pub. What
are you doing round this way?"
"I'm working on the building site across the road," explains the
duck. "I'm a plasterer."
The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn
more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from
his bag and proceeds to read it.
So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich,
bids the barman good day and leaves.
The same thing happens for two weeks.
Then one day the circus comes to town.
The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to
him "You're with the circus, aren't you? Well, I know this duck
that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer,
eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!"
"Sounds marvelous," says the ringmaster, handing over his business
card. "Get him to give me a call."
So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says,
"Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying
really good money."
"I'm always looking for the next job," says the duck. "Where is it?"
"At the circus," says the barman.
"The circus?" repeats the duck.
"That's right," replies the barman.
"The circus?" the duck asks again. "That place with the big tent?"
"Yeah," the barman replies.
"With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in
caravans?" says the duck.
"Of course," the barman replies.
"And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in
the middle?" persists the duck.
"That's right!" says the barman..
The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says ....
" What the hell would they want with a plasterer???.

Possible yes, but unlikely to help.
To do this you would need a VPN in singapore which would tunnel your connection through that route.
But you still have the same (or further) distance to travel at the speed of light (60ms is about the theoretical maximum to europe).
You still have the same number (or more) of switches and gateways to pass through on the way.
Plus you have the added overhead of a VPN encryption at each end.
There are cases where this has been known to help, but generally that means the VPN by accident forces a slightly more efficient route than the ISP uses, which could be fixed by the ISP updating their routing tables.
I have a KIRZ leased line and had issues with speed and latency initially.
Due to the price (25k) I just kept on at them every day for the first month or so and eventually we got it fixed.
Since then has been perfect.
One thing I have just spotted - do you understand the difference between MB and Mb (Mega Byte vs Mega Bit)?
1B = 8b
I very much doubt that you have a 1MBps line since all ISP's operate in Mbps
So if your line is 1Mbps and you are currently getting 300MBps then it would actually be 2.4Mbps.
Thanks for the info, just this morning I've contacted overplay.net and they will give me a 48 hours subscription
in order to test the connection from Thailand to their Singapore server (and from there to Belgium).
Yes, I know the differences between megabyte & megabit, just sloppy writing...
I have (or I should have) a 1/1 Mbps line but only get around .4/.2 Mbps (and a ping of over 700!)
Have complained for over 6 months now and TOT does not seem to be able to fix it.
It's very costly, around 150K baht per year so I'm looking for alternatives...

Peter

Hi All,
I'm an application developer and based in Thailand (North-East) and connect daily to a secured server
in Belgium, Europe. Since last year I have a TOT Leased Line (1MB down&up) with 75% International
speed but lately I'm only getting 300KB down and 150KB up. The contract is up for renewal but I'm
going to cancel it because it's a waste of money. I still have a TOT ADSL 10MB down and 1MB up
and that's (internationally) as fast as my (very expensive) Leased Line.
If I do a speedtest for let's say Singapore then the speed is very good and the ping is way better than
my connection to Belgium so i thought wouldn't it be possible to connect to Singapore and from there
to Belgium. My guess is that the gateway bottleneck in Thailand is worse than Singapore...
I have no idea if this is possible and if so, how I have to accomplish that... any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Peter

I know exactly what you mean, I have been here for 7 months (Isaan) and I have nick-named our (small) village Baan Nothing or Baan Boring.
Have a very beautiful wife (for 9 years), love her to pieces and although I speak a little Thai/Put Thai she's about the only one I can talk to.
Get a bit bored by talking to our dogs (I do!) because the farmers over here are what they are.. simple farmers and conversation stops after
'pai nai/pai sileu?' and 'kin kauw niauw?'. I do escape to Bangkok from time to time, have a friend over there and we talk & talk and hit the
bars at night. Need to vent my frustration once in a while. After that, I'm ok for a couple of weeks...
I'm near Mukdahan not so far from Sakon Nakhon!
Dengue Outbreak
in Health and Medicine
Posted
Well, it looks I have contracted Dengue this week. Three days fever, some joints hurt like hell, completely without energy, headache, eye balls hurt, dizzy, you name it. Three times bloodwork shows the PCT going down from 25 to 20 and today 18. WBC going down as well. The doc thinks it could well be Dengue but
their equipment can only detect it from day four or so. And, it's rampant in our area...
Meanwhile I'm pretty sick but hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and hanging in there...
