  1. I've read Neil's books and have also found them entertaining.

He used to include his email address in his books so I contacted him a couple of times regarding his tales.

I received friendly replies on both occasions, seems like a genuine guy.

I've lent out the books, never to be seen again, I'll have to try and buy the buggers again.

  2. jeeze.. this is a 1st.. with all the available bikes in the UK. Your friend wants to buy a Thaid bike..... :whistling:

Depends on the rarity of the bike and the availability in the UK.

It's a bit like saying Jeeze...this is a first why would someone import a 57 Chevy from California with all the available cars in the UK.

  3. A friend here in the UK has seen a bike he fancies on Thai Visa classifieds.

There is no problem getting it checked out over there but if he wanted to ship it over to the UK would an export company take care of the packing/crating for shipping?

It would be nice to hear if anyone else has done this to see what problems they encountered.

  4. OK, sorry about that Isanbirder, maybe the wrong choice of words but reading the posts one could be forgiven for believing that the existence of ghosts was beyond question.

However many people, myself included, believe that the only people who can harm you are alive and not dead.

  5. Tthe company I mentioned is Fast Car Hire. They offer inclusive car rental with various car rental companies. In this case it is the multi national company Budget.. With this in mind it would be pretty pointless checking to see if they were trying to fob the missus off with private insurance.

    Thanks for the info anyhow.

  6. Mrs Coxhoedave is back off to Thailand next week and has decided to hire a Honda Civic through Fast Car Hire via the Thai Visa website.

The rate includes "First Class Insurance" or Collision Damage Waiver with Zero Excess , Third Party Liability and Vehicle Theft Waiver.

Is this not the same thing?

  7. York is a splendid little city and if you were to manage to make it in mid August you would have the added bonus of the famous York Ebor Festival which starts on 17th August. The 19th is Ladies Day which Mrs Cardholder may enjoy. There is also a race meeting on the 5th of September (Press Family raceday). You'll also find the place a whole lot cheaper than London or Dublin.

Another hugely underestimated place is Durham City. It's almost like a scaled down version of York. Less than an hour by train from York £20 return.

Here's what Bill Bryson said about it in his Tales From a Small Island ""Durham, I think, as anybody who has ever stepped out of the railway station and looked across the valley will appreciate, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world." He added "If you have never been to Durham, go there at once. Take my car. It's wonderful."

Whatever you decide to do or go I hope you both have a brilliant time.

  8. Me and the family had the misfortune of flying with them London - Bangkok return about five years ago.

We were one of the first to arrive at the check in desk, however there seemed to be some sort of a problem with our tickets (which had been bought and payed for a couple of months previous). Whatever the problem was, they were unwilling to let us know. After about half an hour of Russian telephone calls and the tickets getting passed around they decided everything was OK.

Once on the flight everything was uneventful.

After the problems checking in we decided it would be a good idea to get the return flights reconfirmed about 10 days before we flew home. When we tried this we were informed we were not on the computer but to try again later. I must point out that we did not book up on standby.

Everyday on that holiday we were trying to get the return flights sorted. We were ringing the airline, our British travel agent and also a Thai travel agent. It really took the shine off the holiday.

Then, at last, 2 days before the flights we were told that we were, in fact, on the computer after all!! Our joy was short lived when they told us that they had changed the aircraft from a wide body to a narrow body and we were not guaranteed a place on that.

When asked how they proposed to get us home they were pretty vague. "Just turn up at the airport a little earlier than normal and everything SHOULD be OK!"

As it was we were in the bloody airport ages and were at last told we had been found seats on a Thai International flight home..Great!!....but the gate was about to close, so please hurry (run).......Not Great!! with a 9 year old son and a whole load of hand baggage.

I would never fly with this joke of an airline again. Absolute amateurs!!

You pays your money and takes your chance but if I were you I would have no hesitation in canceling your ticket, even if it costs you a few quid, and flying with a "real airline".

  9. You are correct to suggest that there are far more motorcycles on the road which are more dangerous than cars, However to come to the conclusion that this is the primary factor to the appalling death rate on Thailand's roads is way wide of the mark. The average standard of driving in Thailand is very low in comparison with western countries.

You also suggest that MOST Thai Taxi drivers/delivery boys drive like this.

Quite simply, incorrect. In 25 years of visiting Thailand I've never sat on a taxi driving in such a dangerous and irresponsible manner. A driver with such small ability wouldn't be alive for too long.

You also seem to be of the opinion that you were called a d*ck simply because you were a foreigner and not Thai.

IT IS NOT A QUESTION OF RACE!!

If you drive like a d*ck, you're a d*ck and you'll be called one regardless of your race or the colour of the skin.

  10. Why do you think a British pensioner living in Thailand deserves and/or might be elligible for the UK winter heating payment?

So far over £10 million has been paid out to Brit retirees abroad (including warm countries such as Spain). So maybe it's not strange that a person living in Thailand feels he may be also entitled. However it is only for Brits living within the EEC and I can't see that lasting too much longer.

  11. It's easy to cut through traffic on a scooter or motorcycle. It works great up until someone cuts you off or acts unpredictably.

I have done this enough on my motorcycles to see the good and the bad.

You want to take a guess why Thailand has road accident and fatality rates a multitude higher than Western countries? Seems like you haven't figured it out.

simply because there is more motorcycles in Thailand.

    You honestly believe this?

At the last count there were 19.6 road deaths per 100,000 population in Thailand. In the UK it was 4.3 per 100,000. This was due to many factors, poor/non existent driver training, poor law enforcement, high levels of drink driving. etc. etc.

I only hope that when you meet your inevitable demise you don't take an innocent party to meet the big fella upstairs (or downstairs).

  12. This has got to be a troll. NOBODY makes you do ANYTHING unless he's got a gun pointed at you. Why would ANYONE let some stranger put their hands on you, and especially a fat, ugly one?

    I shouldn't even have responded.

Maybe you are right Ian but at least he gave us all a bloody good laugh :)

  13. Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green,

Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock,

Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips,

Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

  14. Well done Chelsea!

I wrote earlier in the season shortly after witnessing Chelsea demolish my beloved Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. It was the finest display from any team in the 40 years I've been going and, after such a performance, I hoped that the title would go to the Blues.

Enjoy it lads (and lasses) I wish it was Sunderland but what the hel_l, I'm having a beer for you all as I write this.
