Been renting an mg zs for a year and a half paying 18k a month. Think we will be in Thailand for the rest of this year and one more.

Can I rent an electric car for a similar price if I rent long term?
Is it worth it? I just like the idea of an electric car.

    Thanks!

EVME have an app - if you download you can check their prices.  If you rent for a year you'll get a better deal, although doubt you'll get something as cheap as you're paying now.

I've just had a look and they're quoting the following for 12 month rentals :

BYD Dolphin Standard Range - 23,799 per month

MG EP - 26,099 per month

MG ES - 32,099 per month

    MG4 - 33,699 per month

    BYD Atto 3 - 37,799 per month

    Tesla M3 Standard - 43,599 per month

You or your parents will need plenty of money to cover healthcare and residential care eventually, if they haven't got any money then back in UK is best where a home and care will be on the state

Yeah that's sadly the case these days isn't it. Thankfully as a family we're OK in that respect, so it's just about making sure we choose the best option.

    Question that immediately jumped out...

What would happen if something happens to you?

Despite their current vitality, over time they are going to be increasingly dependent on you, and if for whatever reason you can no longer manage their care, sounds like they might find themselves to be in a fairly vulnerable position.

Yes that's a very good shout and something my wife and I have talked about.

My wife gets on with them very well, better than I do in fact! She's like a daughter to them and vice versa, she'd 100% continue to care for them if something happened to me.

Something happenibv to both of us though is rightly something we'd need to think about and have a plan b in place for.

I know a couple of people who have brought their elderly parents out to live here.

    With money, it is easy.

Retirement visas (1.6 mil baht in the bank for two) and then self insure.

For any major surgery, they fly to Turkey or Vietnam. Last op was hip replacement in Turkey.

The old folk love it here and have no desire to go back to their own country.

Good advice from cmjl - come for a holiday. If they like it - stay.

The only problem the old folk had - Thai driving test. They are in their late seventies/early eighties.

Good to know thanks.  Don't think they want to drive here so no worries on that front.

Out of interest why do your friends not get their medical care here ? Is it really that much cheaper in Turkey ?

It's a good idea, my parents will be going into a home soon in UK, cost around £13k a month, certainly would have been better to bring them to Thailand

Ouch! That's insane. Did you investigate the option of bringing them here?

What age are they? I am 76 myself and I moved back to OZ because I need to pay health insurance in Thailand and over 70 it will cost you an arm and leg. I still do cooking and cleaning just get my Thai wife to drop me off at shops to buy food since I gave away my car last week

They're early 80s and reasonably healthy. However, in the past year you can see things changing.

Good luck with your move back to Oz.  Having your wife to help out must be really good for you. Perhaps I'll send Mrs Melp back to look after them if we can't make this work 😀

As your parents are still mobile why not invite them for a long holiday(2-3 months) to see how they manage. The problem with moving so far away from all they are familiar with would probably be boredom,I've seen this with elderly friends where their families move them into their homes,it's ideal for the family but the elderly are then away from all that is familiar to them which includes their friends.

This is a great idea, not sure why I didn't think of it!  I may well suggest this to them - thanks for the idea...

  9. Has anyone ever brought their elderly parents over to LOS to look after them once they get to an age where they start to struggle on their own.  If so I'd be really interested to hear how you/they handled the move?

We're getting to that point with my parents back in the UK.  Going back to the UK to care for them is not an option, and I'd really rather they didn't end up in a carehome in the UK. Ive no other family in the UK, so that leaves us with the only option of bringing them here.  They've no underlying health issues, other than old age, and are both fairly adventurous and have indicated they'd be willing to come and live with us.

We'd then employ maids, nurses, carers etc as necessary and based upon their health.

They could afford to self insure for any health care issues, so there's no real worry there.

Immigration would be a pain, but I've been through it many times, so can set it up for them. They've no issues meeting the retirement visa requirements I think. Unless there is an issue if they need some form of insurance which maybe be difficult to get?

I appreciate this is a bit of a broad question, but I'm really just looking to hear people's experiences if you've done something similar.

    Many thanks in advance 🙏

I bought a new phone yesterday.  I've always been a bit tight when it comes buying phones, so just buy the cheapest that will allow me to make calls and download the odd app.  Anyway I've got the Samsung A05s, just setting it up now and when I try to install the BYD app, it says the app is not compatible with this device ?  I thought once these apps were compatible with Android then they'd work on any Android device, I had no problems using it on my previous cheapo Nokia that I'm replacing.  Anybody got any ideas ?

Managed to sort this now, so please ignore the question!

I did not ! I have, however, done that now and low and behold it's there!  So many thanks...

Thanks also for pre-emptively answering my next question of "how do I turn on the wireless charging" !

Regarding the latest Seal software update:

I see that, with the latest update, the pedestrian alert sounds will be gone with no way to turn them back on. Although I don't like them, I would really prefer to have them and have the option of turning them on and off; kinda funny!

    I'll miss them.

For a start, what am I gonna do with the freezer full of Häagen-Dazs ice cream?

I'm unable to turn this on, don't have an option anywhere within settings and AVAS is not on the swipe down from the top menu.  Like you, I'm a bit sad to not be able to sound like a spaceship whilst cruising thru the moobaan, I'd been hoping to feel all futuristic and all that!

I have no audio on my BYD navigation, its not muted at the scroll button in central panel, on the navigation screen itself i have around 1/2 volume

and on the audio tab i have:

    IMG_2162.thumb.jpeg.df7f85a391293e36fdf294fd2238bd05.jpeg

i get all the relative beeps from sensors, BYD lady talks to me and music plays from my phone via Apple CarPlay but navigation is silent.

    Any thoughts gentlemen ??

Mine has the same issue.  Everything looks set up correctly, but there's no sound on navigation.  If I'm listening to music then it quietens the music as if it's trying to provide me with guidance, but there's no sound that then comes out.

Hi everyone, I don't think this has been touched on in this thread.

I was wondering if anyone got the native Spotify app to work on the car with the supplied/built in SIM card. After about a week I have been told by the dealership that Spotify won't work with the SIM card, only if you connect WiFi like a hotspot from your phone? Seems illogical to me. Furthermore, the SIM card is supplied from Singapore, hence the R in the 4G logo on the top right of the screen.

I don't feel confident that the person I spoke to really knows what they're talking about, but perhaps what they said is true? Does anyone have any insight on this? If this is true, can the SIM card be switched out to one that I can get locally?

    Thanks!

Spotify works absolutely fine for me.   Logged in no problem at all, haven't tried listening to Hank Williams though .  I haven't changed the data provider nor have I connected to my home wifi as yet - it just worked out of the box for me once I'd picked up the car and logged into my Spotify account.

Initially very good, but need a good run out to test in sunshine and nighttime, probably have a run somewhere this weekend and on Monday will take the car for a blast on the number 9 Highway ( going for the rear view mirror camera fitting ).

Couldn’t fault them on the fitting quality or responsibility though.

Going back next week for the logo removal, usually do it myself with a rag and alcohol .

Good to hear.  I ended up going with Solar Gard BPH 40% front, 60% all around & 80% roof.  I'm a bit concerned the roof may be a bit too dark, but let's see when I get the car!

On electric meters when you see a number like 5 (15), 5 (100), 15 (35), 30 (100), etc.,  the number within parenthesis  represents the maximum amperage that meter can handle/accurately measure and an electric company will match the service going to your residence with the proper sized meter.

The first number which is not in parenthesis is called the basic/calibration amperage which will be in the general ballpark of what a typical residence might normally pull amperage-wise which would typically be one-third or less of the max amps.  And for calibration checks a key calibration point is approx one-third of full range.

The two numbers printed on an electric meter can vary greater depending on design, quality, specs required by the electric company, etc.

Like a residence with a single phase 100A service here in Thailand would usually have a 30 (100) meter installed but it could very well be a 5 (100) meter...all depends on the electric company.  A 5 (100) meter will be a higher quality/more sensitive meter than a 30 (100) meter....both are rated for 100A service  And although they would probably be pulling less than 10A without any high current devices running (like air cons) when they do turn on one or two larger air cons they could approach around 20-25A....or maybe turn on an electric water heater or clothes drier then the current is going to probably be up around 35A which is about one third of the 100A max service.

Thanks Pib, that's very helpful.  It's a fairly new property, so perhaps for newer builds these more sensitive meters are becoming more standard.

Either way, good to know the max amperage should be suitable for a charger as I'd rather not have to deal with PEA to get a second meter.

  18. 2 hours ago, Gweiloman said:

What sort of meter do you currently have? 15/45 or 30/100? If the former, you can either upgrade or have PEA fit a 2nd meter, like I did, for your wall charger.

How would one know what sort of meter they have ? Just looked at ours and there's nothing to indicate to a layman like me whether it's 15/45 or 30/100 (not that I know the difference anyway, got so much to learn 😅).

I have a suspicion that the price without the subsidy will remain the same and the manufacturers will absorb it.

I think they’re making huge margins with ChineseEV’s

I'm inclined to agree.  It would be a tough sell from these manufacturers to all of a sudden put their prices up by 150k.  I expect to them absorb most, If not all, of the subsidy once it's gone.  Perhaps we'll see them tweak the promotions they offer, eg no free wall charger, or higher promotional finance interest rates etc, as a way of offsetting some of this.

It's the former, all EV's get the incentive, and it goes to the importer, presumably with a lot of red tape involved. Does not change the bottom line to the buyer, we get a heck of a deal right now, but I am not sure how much longer this program will be in effect.

Thanks, yes that what I thought it was. Totally agree there's some great deals on the EVs at the moment.

It'll be interesting to see what the manufacturers do when it does eventually end...
