  1. Doing the right thing?? Ooops.

By who??? The wife and kids when they have no income and no possible way to stay safe and alive?

By the police who make significantly corrupt decisions daily concerning thousands, if not millions of lives?

Or by the laws which say people should be locked up in sh*t holes, because that is the fate they chose (what about an accidental hit?)

Turning yourself in would be doing the right thing??? I heavily doubt it.

Surviving would be doing the right thing.... and how to do that???

At least you could do good on the outside (and maybe drive carefully!)

I would like to think someone would stop for me too. Though, if they were going to suffer, their family was going to suffer for years during imprisonment and they were people trying to survive just like we do, then what right do I have to say that he has to turn himself in if it was an accident? That he should do the right thing? I'm sure the baby and wife didn't hurt nobody, but who's gonna suffer in this scenario? One family, or two? (We'd be reasonable to assume that the assailant would suffer some degree of suffering....)

  2. That is a terrible event. There have been numerous deaths of foreigners; both long term residents and travellers, recently.

There are many people who say the car driver must be something descriptively similar to a low-life or so, because he didn't stop, and hasn't turned himself in.

    Would you?

I certainly wouldn't. You'll end up in a cage for what good; so your wife and kids don't have a stable income and suffer tremendously emotionally, financially, etc..... so the police can scratch another tick in the black book..... so you can 'learn' from your mistake, which truely may have been entirely accidental and coincidence- while you sit in a slumy prison cell rotting away and freaking you out for what?

  3. I don't get why red shirt supporters always bring up the elections won by TRT.

Vote buying= INVALID election results. How many times you need to be told? Get over Taksin, he wouldn't give a hoot about you. You think even if he did come back that he's gonna be foriegner/Thai friendly?

Taksins supporters held a special ceremony to rid him of bad luck. They included names of his enemies, including Abhisit and Prem. If you agree that Prem is his enemy, then 'you-know-who' must certainly be as well. Maybe another reason why Taksin didn't get his pardon???????????? Got an excuse for this one?

If you disagree, then what are you complaining about??

Taksin, TRT, Samak, PPP, Somchai...... who cares! Did they ever promote transparency? I never saw their govt spending plans aired on TV. If you need someone to hate, how about the guy that's got your tax dollars too, and he's been living it up in Dubai. If you're happy to pay for that, sure, go ahead.

I'm sure if he could ever come back to Thailand, he's gonna love foreigners!! Another war on drugs, but this time mostly foreigners and southerners will be the victims. Nothing to do with drugs I assure you.

  4. Thai mothers.

All your kids came back home from school today?

And one little girl in Chang Mai will never go home again, thanks to Burmese illegals, if you believe the reports.... Africanteacher- get your facts right, lets hope you are not a teacher in Thailand.

African teacher has a point which is just different from yours, and you greatly misunderstand what he/she is intending to present; and being a teacher in Thailand has nothing at all to do with it.

    Back to the topic connel707

  5. Thailand are just more aware of the need to conform to international humanitarian issues as compared to Myanmar. Cambodia is still shaking from a dark historical occurance.

(And the foreign minister's comment is spot on for Anglena Jolie, but not the UN, as they mutually lever their ways to persuasive success).

How this will affect Thailand will be interesting, at least as tensions with Cambodia are high and straining, while Myanmar pumps metamphetamines in to kill off the Thais and destroy the societial structure.

If you've ever played the original board of RISK, you know that if you capture Siam, you are in an advantageous position, given that your Army is strong enough...

If both attacked in the sublime ways as they do in real life; from drugs to weapons trades, business or misunderstanding, what would Laos be doing?

What do these countries have in common?

By then, the whole Thai government is upside down (or missing, again) because of another coup (The last one being 'silent'; as the military bent Somchai's ear.....) but I would agree too, agree given my options!

The military has to have the power, because they understand the full importance of national security (in this extreme situation, also attacked on the inside) so they can continue to employ the opportunity to profit and if anything did go wrong, the Prime Minister cops the blame, anyway.

    The good life, ya know.

So, who is the real PAD?? And why not charged already?? Not defending the red shirts, but if it were them at the airport, they would be all locked up by now.

I still believe the country must not accept Thaksin back as PM ever in its history, even if done wrong or he was/is guilty. I am most sorry for Abhisit, who has clearly run into the same closing dead end as Abhisit has.

I think Abhisit is trying to stand well with some incompetent ministers and the military and all of course, in the media; the biggest think tank scandal ever to be employed as a persuasive device.

Taksin, like Abhisit was probably a good guy too, but their days are always numbered, or if not, Taksin and Abhisit get the blame.

The most significant thing Thaksin ever did was rearrange his generals.

Now are you red or yellow? Or how about aware.

  6. I've read this forum for many years; never post! Great to read.

It doesn't look hopeful for some members on this forum to stick around at this news!

In this case Thaivisa will win more forum readers, to greatly offset the ones they're losing now.... not to mention the benefits and contacts....

I don't like it; it's a bad idea and could be pocked with hidden agendas.

However, I would have made the same decision!

I still would now! $ :D $ Competition catches up quickly!

but MOST importantly; WAS every other newspaper closed?? :o

  7. Well, Thailand isn't all that bad against some of the politically defensive members on here, and it certainly isn't the greatest and most efficient.

However, it was pleasing to see some court rulings against corruption in the last few months, that's gotta have been a step forward (assuming they were guilty in fair and just trials). It may have been the climax of any future justices to come!

Personally though, my impression is that everyone involved in any of the alliances has broken the law and the one with the greatest exectution of the furthest reaching plan from here will eventually take the reins, though for how long who knows!! See how many coups in the last 75 years??

But as for either group thinking about Thailand as a unified people.....? I doubt it.

All sides have made unlawful errors having their own motives.

Off course the leaders opposed to PAD are leading from the front, not. Both sides are as guilty in the fighting. The truth is this country would not know democracy if it bit them on the bum. May be the should do a US style constitutional republic, while still embracing the monarchy.

Interesting idea, I bet someone's thinking of it.....!

  8. Too many loopholes in Thai law.

In most cases where Thai persons owe money to Foreigners (or other Thais for that matter) they will remove everything they own onto other people (family, maids, drivers) and simply plead poverty. They might still be driven around in a Benz, but on paper it is not theirs.

Anybody recalls how rich Thaksin's maid was :o

In the West this would generate a big inquiry in how his family/maid ended up being so rich, and how the bloke manages to drive a Benz while being poor. Mainly by the tax people looking for missed revenue! Not so in Thailand, where these people have the lower level tax people and coppers in their pockets!

So basically these judges aren't doing much wrong, they are just following the laws, and in Thailand you simply can't make a person without money to give you back much. They will probably propose something like a monthly payback of 25% of the bloke's salary, which will amount to something like 2000 Baht. Big help on a multi million Baht debt!

Thanks guys, especially Monty and Gary A.... good advice and insights.

If English contracts are not valid, then how can Thai investments be taken seriously? More importantly, are English contracts valid if the developer and the investor were both of Foriegn descent, neither being Thai, but the deal was witnessed and signed by two Thais?

Would that one have a fair chance of legal support at getting money back?

  9. Better be a good lawyer. Some friends of mine invested in real estate near Pattaya some time back. One guy still has nothing(house or money) 2 years later, even with a stipulated completion date. Other guy even had a clause in his contract saying "if not happy, you will get your money back on **/**/07 date". Over 18 months ago, in fact. He also has nothing.

Lawyers are unable to help him, seems that contracts drawn up here are not enforceable as they are in the West. Both foreign and Thai developers are able to hide behind this loophole.

Mind you, there are some straight developers out there, just have to look around. Best advice I heard over here was from a Thai lawyer who said, "if you can't see it, can't feel it, can't walk into it, then don't buy it".

Cheers goys, great to get some feedback on this. He's a bit worried about it. However, the developer has been continuously emailing stating "we're ready to sign in some more investors..... the new project is coming and you'll get your money....." ... So, if nothing else, It acts a testimony for him that the developer has assured his commitement to the contract... could this be used as a type of evidence?

  10. Hello

I cannot give specific information, but can elaborate enough to get some answers.

My friend has put money into a real estate investment. The owner of the investment plan drew a contract saying that if there was no profit in some time, then he would give the money back to my friend. The time period is not yet up, but the other investors involved in the project have all withdrawn; leaving no project, just the investment plan owner and the contract.

Therefore, is it valid for my freind to get the money back?

    another explanation:

    1) friend put in money to investment and signed contract: stating he would recieve profit from the project

    2) He signed the contract AFTER the other investors; the project existing because the other investors held a majority in the investment and that his money would be paid back after a time period if no profit was made

    3) all other investors pulled out of the project, leaving no effective project

    4) the time period is not yet complete, another year to go before money can come back according to the contract

Does anyone know what would happen with the money my friend paid? Nothing in the contract states anything about if the investment went bad cause all the other investors pulled out......

  11. Read these again; this one by xangsanhua (or something! Sorry bro-) great post

It's nice to be happy, but 90,000 people is neither a minority or a majority. It's simply the number of people who were bussed into the stadium through whatever incentives and strategies were required for that purpose.

The 90,000 might represent the voice of the poor farmers, or perhaps just their local grandees - those who wield the power and have the real voice in the countryside. It would appear from the Bangkok gubernatorial elections, however, that the 90,000 represent only about 25% of the Bangkok electorate. Do the 90,000 represent a majority of Thai citizens with a secondary or higher education? Does this number represent a majority of Thais who are no longer tolerant of flagrant and gross levels of corruption? Perhaps the 90,000, who presumably believe criminality is an acceptable aspect of populism, reflect those who say they don't care.

We are starting to hear the language of moral equivalence, as we did during the Cold War, when Soviet dictatorship was seen to be morally equivalent to US imperialism. Now we are presented with the UDD as the legitimate equivalent of PAD, but the PAD leaders have not been charged or convicted on any grounds of corruption or theft. The middle-aged and elderly people, women and families that comprise the bulk of daily PAD attendances (from my observation) have not been bussed in in large numbers for a one-off Nuremberg-style rally such as we've seen tonight. The PAD have been invariably right in their analysis, though most agree their "New Politics" needs more discussion. The UDD and their PPP backers seem to have only one agendum, to overturn the law and the constitution in favour of their Leader, a man whose criminality has been established, but whose resources can buy him loyalty in a patronal society.

Well-resourced political leaders throughout the world have always been able to mobilize the numbers. It tells us nothing about minorities or majorities.

This one by animatic (great post)

He was ousted so that the control over the check and balances could return to normal hands,

not his since he used them as a weapon against others.

And so that he could be prosecuted for the crimes people knew he had done, but couldn't touch him for

because he used the checks and balances as weapons against ALL dissenters..

Once checks and balances had been partly restored, he was investigated and prosecuted

and in two case there have been judgments. Both against him or his interests.

He is now a criminal on the run in another country.

His crimes have anulled his right to return and become a legally elected dog catcher.

He was ousted because his crimes were well known and had become intolerable.

And because he was looking very instable and paranoid in the last 3-4 months of his premiership..

Fascists get power and keep power.

This junta returned it rather quickly as junta's go historically.

They were as benign a "bunch of thugs and fascists" as ever out on a uniform.

And a reply to this statement by JAG

There is nothing benign about parking tanks downtown to announce that you have deposed an elected governement.

------- Yes, there is. It was only a symbol to convince the public on 'moral' grounds; making Taksin look like a criminal even more

I agree with both posts in many ways. There is also a rift between the expat pol]population based on these political events. It's not really about politics, its about cheques and balances and media.

    Cheers

  12. Pumpuiman, I'd say you've been duped with 2nd hand information. You clearly haven't been to BKK lately, like your sister in law.... why don't you take a ride on your buffalo and go check it out before relaying 2nd hand information, miles away from the source.

If anyone has a photo of a collection box, feel free to upload it, eh!

    cmsally says very well:

"Take a moment to demand more and maybe push the intellectual level up a notch or two and then maybe the country can make some progress."

That would include information sources for this forum too.

I would be very dubious of pro-PAD newbie posters who've suddenly come out of the woodwork to put most of their posts on this particular thread. :o

Toptuan, counting is a feat you haven't quite mastered. You prove the point exactly; terrible information.

Being a newbie to post isn't all that bad either; you learn alot more from listening than speaking. You may learn to count, too.

I'm not pro-PAD, I'm pro-democratic; whoever may pave the way to acheive that!

  14. This is the OP

Thanks guys, that helps alot. The matter is a little more complicated too, if I may explain and ask:

Ok. Because it's international school holidays and the teaching term finishes on June 13th, I have 2 months paid holiday, and my work permit actually expires on August 21st (but I am not required to go back). I recieve full salary until then, as it is the end of my contract.

IF I sign a new contract and change the work permit over to the new school on August 1st, is that grounds for my current school to say "hey, you're employed by someone else now, so we don't need to pay you salary from August 1 to August 21st.."

OR do they need to complete the payments as arranged?

Cheers guys, and thanks again in advance if you can help with this.

  15. Hello :o

I've heard various stories, and can't find any concrete evidence on the following. If possible, please assist with your knowledge.

Background: I am a 29 yr old, Australian man, living in Bangkok. I have been working in an International School for the past 3 years. I am changing to a new school.

The current employer has said he will assist in transferring/changing the work permit directly to the new school (if possible), without me having to leave and get a non-immigrant B visa/or tourist visa (to re-apply and get another work permit when I come back).

Question: Is there any way to move from one place of employment to another, without having to leave the country to get a tourist visa or Non-immigrant B? Is there any way I can continue to go to the new school by just doing paperwork changes and not leaving the country? If so, what would I need, and how should I proceed in doing it?

I re-phrased the question again for clarity.

    Thank you in advance.
