This must be a US type problem. The streets of Chiang Mai are no different to the streets of central London, with the main difference being that in Chiang Mai is a lot smaller and you have a bloody great squre moat and river to get bearings off. This is an easy city to find your way around, the only problem is if you are going to take notice of the one way streets!
I do agree that most people here seem to be crap at giving directions though.
It was also last week that I was complaining to the missus that the majority of Tuk Tuk drivers were totally useless at finding there way around town. They seem to have no concept of the quickest or shortest routes, and allways try to find their ways from main roads. They could do with introducing 'The Knowledge' style exam here.

Give it a break! How is giving bad directions and getting lost a US problem? A number of studies suggest that women tend to refer more often than men to landmarks, whereas men refer more often than women to the cardinal directions. Maybe you and Drew A. are just more in touch with your feminine side than a typical US male…

Could statins boost your bedroom performance?
There have been a lot of news reports on statins, particularly Crestor, lately. A new study, media reported, suggests that Crestor can help apparently healthy people with normal body weight to reduce heart risk. But should we jump start taking statins? The medicine does not come without side effects.
Statins are well known to effectively lower cholesterol, which is believed to be the culprit for heart disease although experts have said it clearly that this type of medicine works well in people with underlying heart conditions, but not in healthy people simply because the risk reduction in healthy people is not that significant.
After all, we have quite some alternatives available to be readily used to reduce not just cholesterol, but directly cut the risk of developing heart disease and stroke. For instance, Dr. Dean Ornish's diet along with his lifestyle program works in 99.999 percent of people to stop plaque buildup in arteries or even reverse the progression. By the way, don't think you have no problem with artery blockage. Evidence shows that as many as 70 percent of healthy young people may have their artery blocked to certain degree.
Those who feel uncomfortable with the cheap dietary invention and are reluctant to follow the famous Ornish's diet and lifestyle program may still try to take some supplements like vitamin D and red yeast rice, which have been known to be very effective in lowering cholesterol. Just remember that cholesterol is not the only risk factor that is involved in heart disease.
As mentioned early, statins can help people with heart condition and there is no doubt about it. For those people, the benefits may well outweigh the risks.
Still there is one possible benefit which may not be well known to many people. Taking statins may boost sexual performance in men with erectile dysfunction (ED).
At least one study by Ferrer E and colleagues from Prous Science in Barcelona, Spain and published in the Jan 2007 issue of Drugs Today suggests that statins have emerged as a promising therapeutic option due to their multiple modes of action.
Ferrer et al. writes in their report that ED is a disorder involving impairment of the vascular endothelium and is associated with cardiovascular disease. They say not all phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors may help patients with ED.
They suggest that "The use of statins as adjuvant or alternative therapy in erectile dysfunction has opened new avenues for the treatment of this disorder."
The possible use of statins in men with ED is not far-fetching. Miner M and Billups KL from Brown University in Swansea, MA reviewed previous studies and found that Ed is linked to hyperlipidemia/dyslipidemia. Statins can modify the blood conditions and thus at least theoretically they may help men with ED.
But no one should venture to start taking statins for that possible effort because of the efficacy and safety issues. Still, there are many things men can do to improve their performance. Physical exercise, vitamin C, peanuts or arginine supplements, omega 3 fatty acids and garlic are some foods that men can eat to boost their performance in bedroom.

ok somewhat off topic here,
How much is the current rate on yours then.....JT?
I have a normal market rate, I frankly don't even look at it. I never carry a balance (unless on a zero interest deal) so I what is known as a DEADBEAT to the card companies. I like to have the cards for convenience and in case a major expense comes up.
I worked for Citi Credit Cards USA for about 3 years. I left last year. You're not considered a deadbeat as long as there is activity on the card. Credit card companies get a nice commission on all your purchases. However, you would be considered a "gamer" if you constantly switch cards to get a lower interest rate.
Your previous post is correct. Credit card companies will raise all your rates for late payments. Sometimes they will give preferred customers a little slack. But, I wouldn't chance it in this financial shit storm. They have real time data from all the credit agencies. You can run - but you can't hide...

Check out DiscWizard at Seagate. It works with any brand of hard drive and uses the Acronis engine. It's free and easy to use.

I recall this was a special (older) version of Acronis True Image customised for Seagate,
which mainly works with Seagate Discs. If non-seagate disks (Hitachi, WD, Fujitsu etc) YMMV
(your mileage may vary). Suggest caution if non -seagate discs.
Indi
It's been updated, per the Seagate site. Also see: http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/seagate-di...-free-download/

because 84% of forum users are not in thailand than your lash is pretty pointless
That's an interesting number. Did you know that 76.3% of all statistics are created on the spot?
BTW, his "lash" is not pointless. It is his view. Why would you dismiss that as pointless? It took balls for him to post it.

Not to me ... I value honesty. Flattery or false preconceptions just let me know this is yet another person setting up a barrier to meaningful contact.
And we all know how endemic such barriers are here.
I am an Aussie and tend not to sugar coat, as compared with Americans. I find Europeans are usually direct, too. Europeans won't smile unless they feel a good reason to.
Many foreigners here willingly suspend disbelief. I can understand why. But one of my favourite occupations is observing and understanding people, so I prefer truth, as the other sees it.
The "negative misconceptions" may have their validity, too.
With that attitude, you leave me no choice. I'm throwing my Crocodile Dundee DVD away!

Criticizing without critical thinking (challenging the answers not the questions) is easy. Especially for those who are used to letting the western media do their thinking for them.
How is your post relevant to the original post ? I'm afraid you shoot yourself in the foot.
That's good critical thinking. You should rest now.

samskywalker,
I fully subscribe to your "hit and run" approach to making a difference. Isn't it shocking how these ungrateful Thai's don't fall all over themselves whenever a benevolent 'round eye' deigns to help them out of their plight?
I noticed you're a 'newbie' too. I left Udorn in July '75. I was also stationed in Korat in '72. In case you're wondering, I married the mother of my half-Thai, half-American kids over 30 years ago.
I live north of Chiang Rai. But, I'd like to learn more about your center.

I don't have the Becker s/w. I do have two other Thai dictionaries installed on my Palm T|X (see links below).
I like the Paiboon more than the LingvoSoft for its Thai keyboard and phonetic spellings.

Trying to land and hitting a hillside at high speed seems like conflicting information. I was a helicopter flight mechanic in the US Air Force. We practiced auto rotations all the time - with the engine in idle speed.
We lost a transmission once and had to do it for real. You only get one chance - it can hurt a lot if you miss. -
Hey Techie Bods,
I brought a new Linksys WAG200G ADSL wireless modem/router for home (TT&T line, premier account) but the thing loses its connection with the internet (DSL and internet lights go off) and it cannot reconnect (to the internet).
When first turned on no problems finding the connection all the lights on, all good, wireless working, then usually 20-30 minutes later it loses the connection and cannot reconnect. I have to unplug the thing (no switch) and turn it back on again, this sometimes works sometimes don't.
This happens if the wireless is disabled, if I am downloading (torrents), surfing or if it is doing nothing at all.
The connection using my old modem that came from TT&T has no problems whatsoever so should be something to do with the new one.
I set the thing up with the installation disk that came with it.
I have been searching around alot, I have updated to the latest firmware and checked my optimal ping rate thing (dont know) but it was 1430 and changed the MTU settings to that, but still no joy.
Anybody here have a similar experience and know what to do? Or any really intelligent people who know what might solve this?
They seem like a popular choice here so hopefully they cant all be bad. Please help before I break the thing.

Have you seen this?

I registered several years ago and have not bothered to re-register. They have local area 'wardens' I think, but I am not sure what a warden would do (in the USA, they manage prisons!). What disaster might they warn me about, that I would not already have read and commented on, here on ThaiVisa? If there is a military overthrow of the existing govt., I doubt the American embassy would help. Nothing like the German consul at Nanking during the massive gang-rape by the Japanese, 1938-39.
The only American consulate is in Chiang Mai, a nine hour bus ride from the embassy in BKK. It's a real consulate general, staffed by diplomatic professionals.
I was working in Iran when Jimmy (idiot) Carter convinced the Shah to leave. Our military people were evacuated. The rest of us (US citizens) were left to fend for ourselves. I was lucky to leave the day after the Shah left. The unlucky ones became hostages.

I live north of Chiang Rai. I have a Sierra PC card, with service from Cat Telecom. I also have a USB adapter/PC Card holder for my desktop.
I've had no problems with service/speed in the Chiang Rai area and in Chiang Mai, using a laptop with a built-in PC card slot.
I no longer need the equipment if you're interested.
Usa To Thailand And Back Again
in Visas and migration to other countries
If it's a one-way ticket from the US to Thailand, just use the Thai passport all the way. Use the same name for the airline ticket. We've been there, done that and got the t-shirt!
