OK, I'm 80 now, on a non-O in Bangkok with a multiple re-entry permit. What's the chance I will ever be able to buy the insurance required at a price a normal person can afford or justify in order to re-enter the country as long as this requirement stands?

I got some flack a couple of months back for saying I may have to pack up and leave indefinitely, and not to slam the door behind me, but I can't be the one of this mind. My guess is that the world is stuck with this virus for at least two more years. Of course I can just decide to stay here and die before I ever see my grandchildren in person, could be worse.

I was reading through some articles about Butter, Margarine and Fat Spread.

Going back in time, Butter was the favourite. Then came margarine - offered as a healthier option to the beloved butter!

And now comes the 'fat spread', slowly pushing the margarine out!

So... what could be considered the 'healthier' option for our daily bread?

    And why?

    Butter is made of cream.

Margarine is made of first liquid vegetable oil (mostly cheap soy).

Can you imagine what kind of additives must be used to convert it

into a spread, not mentioning the process.

    Now you decide.

I need to fly to Toronto. Air Canada uses JAL Ana ANA as partners. Is it safe to book without fear of cancelation. Air Canada won't refund only issue a voucher.

Thai visa forum consists of Air Canada Experts! Under no circumstances ask the airline directly.

Is there a rule in Thailand if income of employees is written in contracts as pre-tax or after-tax amount?

I.e. if someone has a salary of 50,000B per month, is that the amount before tax or after tax?

And related to that: In some application forms (i.e. bank, credit card) people have to write their income. Pre-tax or after-tax?

There might be some forma where this is clearly stated, but for sure I saw many forms which just ask for the income amount. Which one is it?

Always pre-tax as everywhere in the world unless you  have a contract that says otherwise (common with football players...)

Unless the Thai relatives are visiting, I cannot say the price of beer really effects me.

I don't really drink alot. A couple of 50-60 baht large chang/singha light or whatever for watching the football on a Saturday or Sunday night and i'm done. Unless the wife wont wake up for her daily dues, in which case i'll go back have another ????

I neither live in Thailand nor understand the Thai judiciary system. However, if I were in your boyfriend's situation, in addition to weighing the helpful advice of others here on the Forum, I would also consult with a competent lawyer in Thailand to be certain about my options. Wishing you luck moving forward.

The best advice for his friend; so good to have friends who care ...  ;-)

Best of luck on this...        Some years ago I had air freighted to Thailand  9  boxes of personal effects, total  freight cost $750. I had printed off  Thai  regulations   re customs duties, in both English and Thai.  When I went to collect the boxes, I was "informed"  I had to pay 20,000 baht. No reason wa given.  I refused, and pointed out the regulations that I did not, given my Visa status applying.  I then asked to speak to the senior officer at  Customs.   Lovely fat ,gross female, with a magnificent moustache.

She looked through  all paperwork, grunted, and demanded  I pay 40,000 baht.  I asked to borrow her cigarette lighter, have my 9 boxes  placed in vacant land nearby, as I intended to burn the lot, rather than they get their thieving hands on them.  I was promptly offered discount price of 10,000 baht. In disgust  threw  the money at fatty. No receipt offered or given. Went downstairs to find some  female officer tearing my boxes apart.  I suggested to her she desist, or I would remove her head from her shoulders. She demanded 3000 baht. I threw 2000 at her feet, and while she was  grovelling around on the ground picking it up, gave her a free slime ball on her head ..I was  rather p....d off by this time. Since that date, my opinion of Thai officialdom has deteriorated even further.     So go to it, bring lots of money, you will need it.

Some years ago I airfreighted a air-container full of personal items and later a 4o foot sea-container with furniture, household goods, etc. (no electronics, no booze, though) and did not pay one Baht...

Everything is fine doing things privately from home or elsewhere without the proper paperwork, however if you have problems with anyone or someone is jealous of you making a few baht then you incur major problems including possible deportation. Unless you really are needing the money I wouldn’t take the risk .

You are not even allowed to teach free of charge!

(To illustrate this somewhat: A few years back, when farang members of a Rotary Club from Pattaya tried to distribute bottles of drinking water (free of course) to a flood-affected area in and around Bangkok they were not allowed to do so because of lack of work permit.)

  9. It is definitely a good thing that health insurance has become compulsory, but please, for everybody! As far as the requirement for health insurance is concerned, nobody understands why a distinction is made between visas called "Non-Immigrant O-A" and "Non Immigrant Retirement".

    Many more questions arise:

    1) Is there a proven record that those with an O-A Visa are more likely to run from a hospital without paying?

    2) Why the OPD? When you go to a doctors appointment (private consultation or hospital), you will have to pay immediately. In case of a bigger issue (hospitalization), the insurance pays. Insurance also pays in case of accidents.

    3) What about those that still have health insurance overseas (National Health, Seguridad Social, Krankenkasse, etc.)? How to prove that you are covered while in Thailand? Is a Thai insurance still necessary?
