  1. I should be sitting on a beach now in Sri Lanka but since its the busy season I am freezing my butt off in Chiang Mai.

I was there a few months ago and the exchange opffices are open 24/7.

When you leave the arrivals area, after customs you will see them all hanging out of and over their offices all shouting at you to change money in their bank. The reates are all the same and from my experience they are similar to those offered outside the airport.

Not sure about them changing THB, I have never see the rate on their boards.

Get some small notes as well because taxi drivers, food stalls have no change.

Google : Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank and see if they mention THB on their site. Keep in mind that there has been a scare here recently about fake 1000 notes so if you are bringing any of them with you, make sure that they are spotless and have all the watermarks.

If you need help or advice on places to stay, PM me and I can do what I can for you

  2. I think you completely missed the point of my original posts TingTongrb.

Your original posts had a point ?? :o

I am not in Chiang Mai either but I am posting through the general forum - I guess that is OK....

Oh dear! Another one. Please, please, please read my original posts again. If you still can't grasp the point let me spell it out for you. I was suggesting that this forum is becoming disturbingly mundane which I feel is highlighted by people posting about the weather today. I also said that I am as guilty as anyone else for posting about it. I was implying that the forum could do with a bit more creativity as well as to continue providing us with a range of useful information about CM. Nowhere did I say that I think it is not ok to post in the CM forum if you are not in CM. I was merely stating (perhaps a little bluntly) that it is of no particular interest to anyone in CM what the weather is like somewhere else. Or maybe it is? :D

Please read things carefully before making smart remarks. If you still cannot grasp things then go back and play with your lego and don't waste time posting. :D

    Regards,

    Hill16

    P.S. Happy New Year!

will you get off this f---ing forum and get your ass down to tuskers for a beer!!!! see if we can cheer you up a bit you grumpy old c--t!!

Looks to me like someone did not get to see the Late Late toy show this year, either that or he is dire need of a selection box.

PS. I still have 5 baby hamsters who need homes in 4-6 weeks.

  3. When my 1 year was up and I changed it to the 5 year I did not have to do the test again. You license has to be near to expiration before they will give you the new one.

There is a hospital a few blocks before the office that will give you the medical cert for 60 Baht. I got repremanded for smiling when they were taking my photo, you gotta have that standard polititians sour look for all official photos.

The lady at the counter is the most helpful govt employee i have ever come across.

  4. chiangmaifurnish.

Dont ask me what sex they are as i am not an espert on hamster genitiles especially when they are 3 days old

Dont worry about that coz your wife or gf wil have sorted that one !

the girls will be wearing pink coats ..... the boys blue !.

That is NOT funny dave2, only because it is true. We are in the pet shop a day ago and she was looking little knitted coats for the hamsters !!!

I pointed out that they had fur coats already but that seemed not important.

A friend of mine has a german shepard, actually from germany and he has the poor thing wearing a sweater, well his wife does.

Please, will someone take the rest of these lovely little creatures off my hands before they end up riding on the front of the bike with me.

  5. Congratulations granddad! :D

I see your kids are giving you great fun and before you know it a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggeee off-spring, if .... you don't do anything about it soon. And that is by no means giving them chocolate :o Duuuhhhh, granddad's spoiling his kids too much. :D

"Grandad" does not feed them and if given the chance would consume the chocolate if he saw it first. Basicially, they are real easy to take care of. They eats their nuts and stuff and any vegetables that you just happen to have lying around.

Glad to say that 3 of them so far will be leaving home. Dont ask me what sex they are as i am not an espert on hamster genitiles especially when they are 3 days old.

  6. I guess it is too late for this year but if you are looking for a turkey for next christmas the I can highly recommend the pre cooked ones that Rinping Supermarket does. I devowered one last night and it was the tastiest bird I have had in years ( i will leave this sentence in so it can generate some spice to yet another food thread ).

It cost just under 200THB a kilo cooked and then they can also add in the extras. The stuffing was not that great nor was the gravy.

Fell asleep soon afterwards dreaming or jelly beans and wheels going round and round ....

Like UG, I enjoy eating and this turkey was unbeatable and I have cooked and eaten many.

  7. Even though I sat them both down when they first came to live with me and lectured them on " safe sex ", our Hamsters have now given birth to 8 red jelly bean like babies. After doing some basic maths and looking at a calendar, if this continues at this rate we should have 347 of them by June.

So in about 4-6 weeks it will be time for most of them to pack their pouches and look for other accommodation in the Chiang Mai area.

So we are looking for responsible hosts to step forward and adopt one of these little red things !

I am assuming that they will grow fur soon and stop squawking at night when they are hungry.

They are the small variety, parents are brown and affectionate and are fond of chocolate, lettuce and unprotected sex.

If you would like one you have to first get past the Gatekeeper ( my GF ) and convince her that you can take care of it. She is rapidly becoming attached to them and the thought of my apartment turning into a zoo is scaring me. One wheel going round and round and around all night is enuff for me.

You will need a cage and they are readily available through out Chiang Mai. They are easy to take care of and as they are up all night on the wheel you could utilize this free source of energy and hook up the TV to it. I rekon they do a few miles each a night between " encounters "

PM me if interested please, you cant see them for a few weeks unless you want to risk having mummy hamster taking your hand off. They are not toys and not suitable for small children.

They make great company for someone living in a small apartment as they do not take up a lot of room.

  8. I got a huge red sack I use for laundry, you are welcome to borrow that if you want. I reckon for under 500 Baht you could get a suite made down in Chinatown. I have a lady there who makes good cheap curtins for me very fast when I bring her the fabric. I have also seen good red cotton for 25Bt a SQM.

The easiest way to put together a beard is to buy a couple of cheap dolls and give them a haircut. What to do with the bald dolls afterwards I will leave up to you.

Oh, if Santa is planning a walk down Loi Kroh then it would be best if he avoided shouting " Ho ho ho " unless he wants to get caught up in a stampede. :o

  9. New licence does not have an address on it so it can be changed anytime by going down to the office. The photo is also digital so it can be replaced with a minimum of hassle.

I agree that dealing with the people there was a pleasure, deffinately the nicest DMV I have ever been to.

Dont forget you need a new medical, the Hospital up the road charges something like 50 Bt for some Doctor to look into your mouth with a torch while you say Ahhh.

  10. I made a long term investment last year and purchased a sheet of first class stamps in the hope that by 2053 the cost of sending a letter will be $ 265.00 and my Grandchildren will be able to sell it on e-bay and pay for my funeral.

PM me and in the mean time I will ravage through my bundles of other usless cr*p and see if i can find one for you.

  11. They have been hanging around that bridge for weeks now . A while ago I turned left off the bridge and and was ambushed by 5 of them all drooling at the thought of the big fine they could get out of me. They usually run and hide under a rock somewhere when the sun gets too strong or just after midday.

While on the subject of bikes, there was a mess of an accident at the intersection of Pantip Plaza on Chan Klan last evening, the road is still covered in blood. There was a huge crowd, anyone know what happened. I saw the Tourist Police there as well.

  12. If it was set in Germany then my guess as well is that it was 'auf wiedersehen pet' .

I'm trying to find the name of a movie that I saw years ago. It was a British film, comedy-drama if I remember correctly, about five UK construction workers from different parts of the UK, all with REALLY strong regional accents, sharing an apartment. Their accents were so strong that this film, although everyone was speaking English, had English sub-titles!

Anyone remember the name of this movie?

    Thanks :o

sounds like 'auf wiedersehen pet' written by dick clement & ian la frenais, bits and bobs on 'youtube',

  13. Down on Chang Klan I had to close the windows in the apartments because there was black soot blowing in. The wind must have been blowing my direction as it reeked of smoke. Possibly the reason I have a headache this evening, I am coming down off a pesticide high.

  14. "Ah okay! Actually, i can now recall watching a group set one off near the ta pae gate area and it getting caught in the overhead electricity wires, and thinking what happens next. Typically for thailand it managed to get itself airborne "

You mean sonething like this ?

  15. I did the visa run a few weeks ago and hopefully the following helps.

I got the Green Bus up, the 8 am one. They have now changed their buses so that they offer 2 class of seats on each bus. The front of the bus in VIP and the back is 1st class. Same bus, same movie, same air con but a big difference in the price. Book early and dont get railroaded into the expemsive front seats unless you are tall and XXX large.

Bring 10 USD with you as advised, it works out alot cheaper than if you use THB. Make sure that the bill is new and that it does not have a seriel number starting with CB. I saw the looking closely at every note they got this time.

This bus goes back at 3.30 giving you plenty of time to do some shopping on the Burma side and pick up some dodgy porno dvd, fake viagra and stale cigetettes. Expect to be followed around all of the time you are there by these nice vendors.

Dont get too many ciggs as the bus gets stopped at least 4 times on the way back and I saw the police going through some Koreans bags and hassling him about his ciggs. There is a limit.

  16. A agree with Drews list however as I have lived in Baan Thai I would say that it is the better of the group. While it is a little older than the Huaykaew Residence its in a better area and the rooms feel better. I seem to remember that Huaykaew charges to use the pool ? I saw both before deciding.

You will need the usual deposits but on the plus side, WETV is free and the wireless internet in my building / floor was fast. Dont get a top floor as you will bake in the heat in the hot season. Ask the residents in there about which builing is best because some complain about noise from some nightclubs.

Just across the road from Baan Thai is a new apartment building that I guess should be opening soon so they will be egar for business.

I do have to admit that I did pass gas on numerous occasions while on the mattress so hopefully you will not get my old room. :o

  17. quote]Thats funny, i too remember bashing hel_l out the button "B" .anyone else ?

That brought a smile to my face and also brought back memories of the days back home when i used to suppliment my pocket money by stuffing a hanky up into the coin return slot. The good ole B button.

In those days I had nimble little fingers capable of doing such a thing. People always assumed I would end up as an Gynochologist and not in real estate.

Anyway, I would do the rounds of " my " phone boxes every few days to collect.

What a little thug I was when I was 8 but I always had money for comics.

  18. Nimmanhaemin.

eye candy to be found at bars like 'warm up'. Although i havent been allowed to investigate further :D

( i am allowed to rubber neck on the way past though :o )

Also the bottom of the night market could possible take off.. see: http://www.chiangmaifurnishedapartments.com/

If you really want a flash pad, at the base of the mountain by CM university which is near Nimmanhaemin. imo.

Personally im wanting to get out to the mountains in San Kamphan...

    I agree with you UKWEBPRO.

I have lived in both places and each has its own thing going.

I spent 2+ years on Nimenhaemen and did get a sore neck from all the rubber necking but after while I just felt like a dirty old man because all the real lookers were more than half my age.

Nimenhaemen area has loads of coffee shops and cafes and lots of places to hang out.

There is a new apartment building going up there called the Punna, google it for the link as I dont think I can post it here. You can see what you get for your money.

Lots of nice affordable apartments around the area if you are thinking of renting mid to long term.

Chang Klan area has some newly built japanese designed apartment buildings. There is a different vibe down there as you are closer to the Night Bazzare so its quite touristy. The area does not have the ambience/ scene that Nimenhaemen has but it commands a higher price per SQM + higher rents if you are an investor.

Big advantage for me as I found out yesterday is that I am 5 minutes away from a Dukes restaurant.

Both areas have a Bake and Bite which is a popular Falang breakfast haunt.

If you are coming to Chiang Mai to retire and are thinking of buying Vrsushi, then I would certainly not rush into things, spend some time here and get a feel for the city and for what each area has to offer.

  19. Its as if you read my mind Chuckler.

I was there last night and was so imressed with the burger that I seriously considered telling the whole world, but then I thought that another burger thread would last about the same time my burger lasted.

A bit skimpy on the fries, but the meat... I have not tasted anything so delicious since I left home.

Dukes is deffinately now on my calander for a weekly visit or two, waistline permitting.

  20. I recently bought some night lights that are charged by solar energy from a new store on the upper floor of Pantip Plaza. They seemed to have a decent selection.

I think the same people own the new teak furniture store on the ground floor as well.

  21. " What an absurd waste of money "

I noticed it last night as I was parking in the city and the first thought that came to mind was that the cops would soon be busting cars for driving in it or parking in it and motorcycles for not riding in it.

Not a waste of money, in fact they might be thinking the opposite.

  22. Where do you get them UG?

A place called : ตนานุวัฒน์ on Chang Moi Road and the label says "Taiyo". My staff just told me it was under 3,000 baht, because I can't remember.

I am 5 foot 11 and very fat and it has lasted about 2 years with no problems.

I too suffer from the effects of good living, cheap beer and an addiction to Moo-kat-taa.

I went on the same hunt a few months ago looking for a chair that would not collapse under me. Most of the office chairs are not designed to hold people over 50(ish) kilos. I realised this once when I was in an internet cafe with a tiled floor. I plonked myself down on the chair and two of the castors shattered.

I have seen many chairs that feel strong but when I sat leaned back on them I didnt feel that they would last long.

My solution : I bought one of those extremely comfortable massage chairs. They dont have wheels so you cant skate around the office but they have firm support, you can lie back verticially on them ( useful if you want a nap ) and they come in a range of colours. They look kinda nasty but when you are sitting in it no one knows.
