iv just come back from thailand and had a new dish with the helping of a thai girl. the soup dish is called gaang bah or something like that. i thought it was hotter than somtam to be honest

as i'm going to thailand next weekend, i had thought about going to a cookery class. yes, i know i'm a tourist, and yes, i know the cost of the class is expensive as it lasts a short amout of time. but is it the real deal? i love my spice and so i wouldnt want a fobbed off thai meal. i would like to use lots of thai ingredients but i have a feeling this wouldnt be the case. could anyone tell me if they have joined one of these classses before. if tis the real deal or just the normal tourist run of the mill

eat papaya salad then if you can handle 10 chili's. as for snake head soup, awsome!! i had this when i was in vietnam but never thought of looking for it in thailand
the amount of times iv asked for pet pet saying i would like it spicy and i find it isnt spicy really upsets me. u cant really complain that everyone else is eating authenic thai food and you have bland thai food with no spice. what can you do?
-
my fav thai food is papaya salad and kaeng plaa kup kluay lai mamung or fish with green banna and mango. but these are foods which i have made myself.
i bought kra pow in 7-11 stores and that was spicy as hel_l but great tasting. normally i just eat street food as i find authentic thai food hard to find in tourist areas, even if i ask for phet phet.

i was speaking to a thai friend on messenger last night. i asked what did you eat for dinner for tonight. although there was no response, she didnt know how to explain it in english. so i asked her to use thai scripy. this is what she typed.
ข้าวผัดหมูสับ
กับต้มจืด ตำลึง
ใส่เต้าหู้
i seached on google about it and i knew the links would be in thai. maybe if i'm lucky it will have pictures. i found one. from the picture, the top one was pork, peas and rice. i guess these are just local dishes one wouldn't find in a cookery book from WHSmith's.
can anyone help me on the thai/english names please

when i was in thailand i eat at roadside hawkers with a lonely planet phrasebook in tow. i knew some words for meat eg chicken but i'm confused. looking at your site and listening to the Thai flip book from rapid share, chicken is spoken as kaw kai rather than what i thought, Kai. so what does the Kaw bit mean then? what was i saying when i pointed to chicken and said kai?

Seems i can't edit my post so after spending 30 mins looking through my guide book to edit, i find i'm not allowed to edit. sorry for double posting. here is a brief description of almost all the pictures

when i was last in HuaHin, i only went to 2 hawkers. some days they were there, other days they were not. i never did ask what time they turn up, but normally when i rolled out of bed, they would of been there.
looking at my slightly not so detailed lonely planet book and scanning my near faded memory, i'm sure of street stall hawker is somewhere down Th Phunsuk on derelict land, oppisite a row of tourist resturants. as for the other one, its down soi selekem, where the soi stagers in all directions. its usally sitting there oppiste a message parlour.
one other one i know has no photo menu, only thai script. only ever eat there once. after that only when i'm hungry, the blasted thing has shut shop. thats on the corner of Th Naep Khehat & Th Chomsin

if you want not to suprised but shocked - have to visit india
next time. currently saving my dosh. anyway, i found two other train market video's and lucky for us they have english subtitles so you can follow the journey yourself. just remember these names, Samut Songkhram is locally known as MaeKlong. you'll see the name of the railway station at the begining of train market 1.
Samut Sakhon is locally known as Mahachai which again, is spoken in the 2nd video.
i'd love to follow this as its only a short distance from BKK
mm, i got a question? how is it the topic poster was able to put up a video from youtube and i cant? what am i not doing? iv already tested it on my friends website and it worked 1st time. i have the embedded code but instead of the picture, i just have the code
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="<A href='
name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="<A href="type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> -

i bought some thai stuff from a shop in Peterborough. the way i see it if its from an asian shop and its got asian characters on the packet, its deffo the real deal. [not bland western 'spice' from sainsburys]. so i picked up a jar which is called ''Bamboo shoot [tip] with bai yanang, cha om, chili & oyster mushroom''
best for cooking thai, vietnamese or lao food, but does anyone know of any cooking recpies i can add it too? would it be better in a spicy soup or eatern cold as a side dish.
my cookery books doesnt even list this for thai food. its normally very basic asian food with a bit of spice
cheers

i was backpacking in asia for 2 years and eat nothing but asian food. now back home in Blighty, i still havent eat a westernised meal for 9 months.
no sunday roast for me. its normally chicken curry with rice
-
ah great, just the topic i need.
can any of you tell me if possible what the Thai's add to grasshoppers when you buy them on the street. if i can make the same taste here, and now how to cook them Thai style, then maybe i can chip down to my local pet centre and buy some.
when i visited Hua Hin, i also eat flying ants with onion rings or something like that. again, is there anything added to the dish rather than deep frying the ants.

thanks for the fast reply guys. i thought i could rely on TAT but i guess not
i thought the rocket festival was pukka which i saw for the 1st time last year. still, would of been nice if the sky wasnt so cloudyProbably the best festival that I have been to during my time in Thailand and seems to be getting bigger each year.Enjoy

last year when i was in Thailand, i visited Ubon Ratchathani and picked up a booklet about the candle festival which is held in july. as i'm not buddhist, i havent got a clue when the lunar event is held. all i know is its for a month and during that time the festival is held on Asanha Puja Day.
i'd like to arrive a few days before the event and as the guide sujests, visit some of the villages where the candles are being made and at least look like i'm interrested.
could anyone give me a fortnight time frame for me to be in Thailand with the correct dates for the candle festival. i have aready emailed the TAT office in Ubon Ratchan' but that was 2 weeks ago and still no reply
ta very much
