  1. If you pay for the insurance and they issue it, the insurance has to pay. The legality of your situation is a separate albeit significant issue.

That's absolute bu**sh*t. You have to have a legal licence. It is not legal to drive in Thailand without either a Thai licence or an International Licence.

I would think that your insurance company would have every right to refuse your claim.

Some policies state Thai driver license and some just say drivers license.I had a Lawyer read my policy and check. That was about

ten years ago. I am sure when you rent from hertz or Avis in Thailand your foreign d license Is accepted and there for legal.

  2. This has happened to me many times, but today is just the latest case...

I was at Chiang Mai city hall with my girlfriend today and there is literally like 100 dogs just walking around so I say "this is how you know Thailand is a third world country"... and she got super pissed... Told me to go back to America, completely overreacted....

Does this happen to you guys too? I mean, I said it in a jokingly manner, but I kind of wasnt. Thai people like to think they are super first world... They spend 6 months of income on an Iphone.... 6 months of income on a purse.... This makes them first world in their minds I think.... But Thailand is far far far FAR from first world, and I'm not sure they ever will be.

I took my Thai wife to Oregon to see my rental houses.(I live in Canada) after seeing what these people lived like and the filth they lived in she said to me.. "I thought America was a number one country" I had no answer

  4. Could I have one point of clarification, please. I am renewing my 5 year license to another 5 year license. Will I need a medical certificate? The gentleman who started this thread said no, but he was the only one who was going from a 5 year to another 5 year. All other examples were from a 1 year to a 5 year and stated you did need one. Should I go ahead and get a medical certificate just in case?

    Thanks!

I did 5 year to 5 year with no medical

  5. I just met a guy from Holland who's one year license was expired a year ago. He went to rayong office and he was told he had to do the whole gamut.letter From immigration, computer test, drive around etc. and then they told him because he was on a two month visa he would not be able to apply for five year when it was finished he would have to do the one year again. He may have got bad info but he gave up.

  6. The posters are not trying to be clever just passing on real facts as it has happened to them.I have been coming here for 25 years and the rules change from city to city and bank to bank.I opened a new account at SCB udon thani last week and even though I had a account at three SCB nong kai branch I had to wait 3 days for all my I.D. info to be sent to Bangkok for approval.A new rule since Jan 2013. It would be unclever(stupid) to not look at others peoples experiences

  7. Most of the expats I know who retired here are not really interested with integrating into Thai society.

They have their farang friends and they are happy with that.

They play golf, drink and chat with their mates.

They realise they have nothing in common with most Thais and have no interest in mixing with working class Thais.

Most dont speak thai and are not interested in learning thai.

Frankly I think they may be better of than those that hang around looking for approval from Thais who are almost invariably of lower social status but of course feel they are better than the farang.

A very accurate view in my opinion. The farangs who move upcountry seems to be the saddest ones, as they attempt to attain Thainess but of course never succeed. The ones I know in Pattaya that lead a sort of parallel existence seem to be having a great time. Great weather, great food, and stunning women everywhere. What is not to like ?? Not sure what to think about this guy. Maybe he was living the dream in his eyes, but certainly not in my eyes. RIP.

Yep all of the guys I am talking about live in Pattaya.

I could think of nothing worse than going into social isolation in Nakhon nowhere.

Certainly most Thais cannot understand why a farang would move to the boonies where he is socially isolated. Turn the tables and that would be a death sentence for you average Thai.

Some how you know what most thais think? I don't think the thais of pattaya are average thais!

  8. My brother in law has 3 children. He died a year ago. I attended his widows wedding yesterday. The new man was there and the children. There are several other second marries that involve Children that I am aware of and yes the men are respectable. What a truly ignorant comment.

  9. Sorry to hear your Samsung experience. After a short while the phone will start shutting off randomly so you can't trust it as a phone anyhow. You will likley then leave it at home as I do and take your old Nokia so you have a phone that works and just forget about the $700. Mine wasn't a grey phone but they can't seem to fix it and of course no refund From Tellewiz
