  1. About a month or two ago I started seeing these brand new, bright blue and yellow, metered taxis around town. At first I thought it was one or two from BKK as sometimes happens, but no, they had Chiang Mai tags and written in Thai across both front and rear windows "TAXI CHIANG MAI".

How is it that this momentous event has gone unnoticed? I was led to believe there are members of this board that keep their collective fingers :o on the pulse of Chiang Mai. How many are there? Has anyone dared ride in one yet??

    Curious minds need answers. :D

  2. A few weeks ago I was in Khon Kaen and happened by the Kosa Mall. There was a booth selling pirate software, DVD's and porn VCD's. What caught my eye was a stack of CD cover sheets for MP3 CD's. I bought a number of them and was lucky enough that all but one plays well and on anything that plays MP3's. I'm hooked now and want to buy more. My problem is that I cannot find a shop here in Chiang Mai selling them. It's like hush hush to even bring the subject up when I asked the DVD shops in the night bazaar and at Computer Plaza.

Does anyone know of a place in CM that sells MP3's. Shhh, I can keep a secret.

  3. Don't know if there's been a posting about Blue Panorama Airlines yet.

Blue Panorama is a private carrier that caters more to tour groups traveling from Milan to, among other places, Bangkok. The fares are cheaper than any others I've found. About 30K baht including VAT will get you there and back. I believe there is a time restriction on when your return flight needs to be taken. Within 30 days, I think. If you're stay is longer than 30 days the fare goes up and is similar to EVA and Austria Airlines.

I just booked a flight last week from Bangkok to Milan round trip but had to adjust my dates due to the popularity of the new service.

Blue Panorama flies out of Bangkok on Fridays and Sundays. Return flights are on Thursdays and Saturdays.

They have an office in Bangkok that you can call.

  4. You may be refering to Lhan Express Intl. Ltd. They are at 87/1 Moo.7 T. Banwaen, A. Handgong, Chiangmai 50230. Their number is 053-434490-1. Ask for Ratchada (Aud). She speaks excellent english. Hope this helps

  5. I actually saw my first crosswalk signal light in action last night. This one is in the Night Bazaar and was used extensively. The funny thing was that the farangs were teaching the Thai pedestrians, by example, how to use the lights. The motorists were stopping in plenty of time also. Just the odd motorcyclist had to hit the brakes in a hurry. Maybe this will catch on.

Of all the locations, throughout the city, of the new traffic control lights the engineers forgot the most frequented crossing. This being in front of Central department store on Huai Kaeo Road. Nothing's prefect I guess.

  6. Along the same line of IT, does anyone know of a shop in the greater Chiang Mai area that understands how to set-up, program and repair computers? Since Hard Hat Computers is no longer, I assume a few of us will need to look elsewhere.

  7. TT&T had a promotion last weekend in Chiang Mai at Airport Plaza. They worked in conjunction with Ji-net, Loxley and CAT. CAT offered unlimited 128/64 for 999 baht per month, all inclusive. The modem was free but I don't know about an installation fee or if there's a one year contract required. I chose Ji-net. Their package was 3500 per month, all inclusive, for unlimited 256/128 with 50 MB mailbox and included the modem. No service charge but had to sign a one year contract.

I've been using CSLoxley's ITV for over a year and have had really mixed service. I'll keep everyone posted on the differences I find between the two.

  8. Gentlemen, I think we have to go back to the primary reason newspapers exist, and for that matter why the privately owned media exists. It's profit. The private sector will publish what they think we want to read. That is called marketing and is profit motivated. I don't think any newspaper in the world will change that objective just to add another plaque for accuracy in reporting to some obscure wall in a conference room somewhere. Needless to say nationally operated media has their own (not so) hidden agendas.

Who was it said, "Don't believe 75% of what you hear and 50% of what you read"?
