1. Plants you should by at Tarad Thai in Rangsit, better prices (can haggle) and a huge selection, Tarad Thai is on pahonyothin in rangsit just past the tammasat campus outbound on the right side.

The plant section is from the main entrance of tarad thai all the way at the end, passed the traffic lights going straight another 100m on the left.

Alternatively on the way from the outer ring road to Nakon Nayok (Road no 305) you will find a lot of road side shops selling plants cheaply.

A nice selection of flower seeds are sold by http://www.trgreen.co.th/ (use translate.google.com if you cannot read thai) under the brand "Green Garden" they are located in Chonburi city.

Their products can somtimes also be found in lotus/bigc

  2. Re. D-link routers, for 24/7 heavy operation they do have some problems in their firmware. Such as hanging, rebooting, slowing down to a crawl. After 1 Dlink router I switched to zyxel, they seem to perform much better especially the newer models with integrated wireless n and the latest firmware.

Re. Wireless n, it does perform much better through walls and if you use wireless n equipment on both sides the speed is similar to a wired connection. As wireless is collision based, using many systems on 1 access point may of course slow it down. I use it in the house instead of having to wire many rooms.

  3. Agree with the above mentioned temperature ranges, 37-47 should be fine.
However generally it is so that a hdd can keep working up to 60 degrees but they won't last very long at those temperatures.
If you use a hdd in an enclosure make sure you get one which runs cool by design like the new WD green ones.

4. I haven't seen the camera in question but I doubt if it is an automated speed camera of the type seen in Europe. For that to work they would need a full back office operation to identify the owner of the number plate, identify who was driving and send out a fine notice by post. I can't see that happening in Thailand for a while yet.

Highway police regularly uses the "gun" type manual speed camera's on a tripod. They usually hiding on the side of the road without police car nearby. After taking the picture they send it to your vehicle registration address, for you to pay a 400 Baht fine at the police station or through the post office. If you fail to pay the fine you won't be able to renew your car registration.

Highway police only sends fines to drivers that drive faster than 120 KM/H.

  5. People are concerned for their safety right now and are looking for information.

Not only that, there are a lot of factories now trying to decide how and when to send their shift workers home tonight as clear information about the curfew applying to Chonburi is not available.

  6. There are reports of "rioting" somewhere in Chonburi but yet to hear reports of exactly where in the province.

Correct, at Thai Oil Refinery on Sukhumvit near Sri Racha, started at about 12:30, this seems to have included a bomb threat to the refinery. Might be a good idea to avoid that area. No info about the current situation

Update: Robinson Sri Racha now closed because of red shirts

  7. I got an Hitachi, works great for 2 years now.

The reason for picking this and not the cheaper types is the material used for the pumphousing and pipes, it is made of an alloy.

Previously my pumps simply burst their tanks after 4 years of service.

Cheaper pumps tend to rust inside and discharge particles into your water mains, which is neither healthy nor pleasant.

After installing a high capacity pump keep an eye on your pvc pipes and taps, they might not be able to cope with the pressure, and start leaking.

  8. The attached link contains a table that details severance pay details, but only comes into play if you have been working for an employer for 120 days. If you have been working for more than 4 months but less than 1 year you will only get 30 days severance pay by law; more than a year then 90 days + depending upon time.

From previous experience I must report that these severance pay rules do not apply to foreign teachers. Since 2004 there is a so called "Foreign Teachers Act" where contracts are automatically limited to 1 year, therefore severance can never be more than 30 days.

  9. I had a similar experience, but after 6 years of employment at a school. The best way to handle this is to get the best deal you can get and get out of there. It sounds like your latest offer is very reasonable. There is a foreign teacher act (from 2004) that states among others that there is no more than one month of severance pay for foreign teachers as their work is always based on a yearly cycle. So my advice, get the check, cash it and leave it. Of course you could insist on having a official termination letter with dates and signatures, but that would just delay the process with the same or worse outcome.

  10. The problem is the price of the spare parts, as there is no stock to speak of all parts need to be imported and that makes the parts very expensive. Even existing brands and models such as Jeep have the problem of inflated (new) part prices.

  11. Hi, is there a formula for calculating area size for air conditioners? How many BTUs are necessary per sq metre, for example. We're looking into putting air conditioning in our house here (Phetchabon), but I don't know the first thing about it, and though I've tried to read up on it, frankly I'm baffled. :)

    -------------------

Yes there is, I've used it many times, it is a collection of formulas (originating from a engineering handbook) that calculate the heat-load on the room from the outside and inside based on some standard figures for insulation and transmission effects of materials.

In general for condominiums it comes down to the quick and dirty method mentioned above.

The most important factors are (in order of effect on heat load):

    1. Size of windows in the room, (heat radiation coming in from sunshine and transmission at night)

    2. Size of walls/ceilings that get sunshine from the outside (heat transmission coming in)

    3. Required temperature difference inside vs outside

    4. The use of the room, i.e. using at night only when there is no sunshine

    5. equipment in the room, fridges, lights and number of people.

For example, a big bedroom 24sqm with one small window used at night at about 24 Degree C can easily be cooled with a 11-12 kBTU unit.

In general I would say if the room is affected by direct sunshine and the AC is used in daytime, the quick and dirty method is quite okay to use,

If you really want the formulas PM me, it is quite some things to write up and people might be bored with it :D

  12. Did the same thing a few years ago:

    1. Make sure you sort out your taxes, otherwise Visa and WP will sort themselves out

    2. Simply leave before your WP is cancelled

    3. Only if you would want to change your non-B to a non-O but for that you would need the return slip (proof of cancellation) of the work permit

    4. That's what I did on advice of immigration, after coming back with a new visa, that new one is the only thing they base a new extension on.

  13. I heard a rumor yesterday that TT&T/Maxnet was bankrupt and Jasmin Internet is in the process of picking up the loose ends. Haven't been able to get it confirmed anywhere though... This supposedly should be the reason people are being called up and ask to "re-signup" for their Internet service as reported by several...

My brother in law is manager of internet services in the north, he told that the problem is that the company managing of TT&T is in the process of being removed from it's responsibilities while the major shareholder wants to take over management of TT&T. This has now become a political struggle as the managing company does not want to leave it's role. This is causing a lot of insecurity among staff and problems in their corporate structure. So untill these problems are resolved things will not improve.

  14. It actually depends on the LCD tv itself, I have a Toshiba 32" which manages to filter the bad or moderate pictures in such a way that it comes very close to what a CRT would do. Simply bring a VCD with horrible picture quality with you and test it on the tv before you buy this will give you quite an idea how your cable signal would look.
