  1. Update - it took exactly 1hour and 23 mins to drive to Friendship Bridge, buy bus ticket, depart Thai immigration, cross to Laos, obtain Laos visa, enter Laos immigration do a U-turn and depart Laos immigration buy bus ticket, cross back to Thai , enter Thai immigration and drive home with my 30 day stamp. I know because I timed it and I was very very lucky with bus times and By the way don't go by the published bus times. The buses include Laos coaches and they seem to go when they feel like it or when full . I went at 1pm on. Tuesday as I figured wouldn't be big queues and this was confirmed. All in all a stress free run.

  2. I extended my non O visa for sixty days without any problems here in Mukdahan - however my extension is due to expire in one week. Normally I would be heading back to work in UK by now but we have applied for wife's settlement visa and kids passports and I don't want to go back before they have been granted/ refused. It has been 11 weeks since passport applications were presented and 12 weeks since visa application went in.

Expecting to hear any day now -

I was wondering if I could hop over to Laos and return same day would they grant me a 30 day visa exemption ?

I am confused by all the changes lately and hopefully somebody could clarify this. I could apply for a new non o in Savannakhet but I really only need a week or two at most - I don't really want to go down that route if possible. Can anyone advise ?

  3. Thanks for the reply 7by7 - my grumble really is about the time it takes from ECO making a decision to being informed by VFS. Ive heard reports of them holding onto passports for weeks before informing the applicant to make an appointment to collect. My wife didn't opt for the mail service as we enjoy an excuse to visit BKK every now and then. It's been 13 weeks since the application was put in.

It's been a long wait and our lives been put on hold until we know if she has been granted clearance - just looking forward to moving on with our lives. Thanks for the links - I have been round and round the .gov website many times over the past month so I know them all well.

As you say there's no tracking as such so just got to wait it out

    Regards

  4. Last week received an email from UK Visas and Immigration saying that since a decision has been made on on my wife's settlement visa would she complete a customer satisfaction survey on her experience with VFS.

As yet she has still not been contacted by VFS even though a decision has clearly been made. I don't know how long it takes to send passports from UK to Thailand but surely not a week . And with no way of contacting them we just have to wait until they feel like doing some work!!!

Needless to say the survey won't be flattering VFS at all .

  5. Well I won't be flying Thai then and probably quite a few more people will be put off by this latest safety policy. What's wrong with taking a completely discharged battery pack in your hand luggage? It's probably the cheap Chinese made battery packs that are "exploding" anyway -

I am all for safety aboard airlines but going down this route you might as well ban mobile phones, laptops and tablets as well ! They all have lithium ion batteries.

  6. Mall roof collapses in Surin province, 6 confirmed dead

    PNEVN570514001000101.jpg

SURIN, 14 May 2014 (NNT) - A severe hailstorm has struck Surin province last night and has triggered a flood that lasted for 2 hours.

Surin Province has been battered by a hailstorm that lasted for an hour, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds at 5pm on May 13th. The storm has caused damage to Global House, a major home building and appliances mall located in the downtown of Surin province.

Engineers suspect the winds had damaged the concrete wall attached to the roof, which caused the roof to collapse. This accident has resulted in the death of six people and one unborn baby.

As of now, engineers will inspect the building structure to determine whether it was built according to standards and also analyze for other possible causes of the collapse.

  7. You'd think that with all these academics and professional elites they could form a credible and media savvy opposition party - without having to resort to this nonsense which is already causing rifts amongst themselves about the way forward. The ruling party have left themselves wide open time and time again for a well organised opposition party to gain extensive political ground - and thereby put themselves in a stronger position at the next (real) general election - but no, let's all blow whistles and throw our tantrums and make demands without providing any real solutions.

I feel better now, rant over

  8. Thailand keen on reducing road fatalities

Measures to tackle road accidents include requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets while riding and discouraging all motorists from speeding and driving when under the influence, according to the Road Safety Directing Center.

  9. Why do people always say the government was elected? They PAID for there votes…. That is Not democratic. That is Corruption…and that is what the Yingluck Government is.

Yes there are handouts from all political parties to the electorate and it varies in amounts depending on how much influence you wield in your community but the way I see it is that the peoples votes were not bought but rather the people sold their vote to the highest bidders. It's an opportunist market.

You don't see many published manifestos distributed to the population before a national election here do you?

It really would be breath of fresh air if every Thai national of voting age could weigh up the pros and cons of all political nominees before arriving at a polling station and casting their vote based on well informed choice rather than tradition and greed.
