  1. I have an employee with a car that we occasionally send on errands to pick stuff up. I know in the US there is a standard rate published for mileage reimbursement. But wasn't sure if there was something similar in Thailand.

Based on some quick math I was thinking I would reimburse him 10 Baht per Kilometer (gas plus wear and tear). Does this seem high/low/reasonable to you guys?

  2. Just as a follow up...I was specifically looking for an 'T' Reveal and finally stumbled across a place that sells them...albeit in plastic (Beggars cannot be choosers).

http://www.thaifukuvi.com/pcm/product/Pages/furnishing01.aspx (appears to be the same company http://mscthailand.net/furnishing/furnishing01.html)

You have to buy 100 pieces but at 48 baht each for the FP-12 its not too bad. (If anybody needs a few I think I might be able to spare some!)

  3. Mig welders are not very popular here (as you've noticed!). So finding a decent entry level model is going to be pretty difficult I think, there just isn't much of a market for them. Supplies will be subsequently sparse as well. I might suggest that you get a Tig welder, you'll be able to do the thin delicate stuff and can also use it as a stick welder for the big and nasty. Welpro has a wide range of readily available models and appears to be a pretty respectable company. Also someone referred me to this company that sells some western brands... http://www.diamondinter.com (likely at a premium though).

  4. I think you could make a simple double enclosure based on the same principles that are used to sound proof a gas powered generator. There are tons of plans/pictures online if you approach your problem from that direction, obviously a generator is much louder and runs hotter so the same concepts should be more than sufficient.

  5. Haco do make RCD protected outlets, but I've never seen them on sale.

You could go to their office on Ngam Wong Wan (paste these GPS Coordinates into google maps: 13.860323, 100.528711) and buy directly from them. Of course would be advisable to call and make sure they have it in stock.

  6. Another option is Lanko 534. It's marketed as being for "Rebar Anchoring" but the data sheet suggests that its is suitable for all the usual epoxy tricks. (http://www.davco.com.my/images/product/Lanko%20534.pdf from the malaysian site so the data sheet is english but the number is the same for Lanko Thailand).

Just under 600baht for 2kg (also comes in a 1kg kit). Don't have any first hand experience with it yet. But can report back at the end of the week.

  7. From my own research for a SIP's project I am working on it is only imported in Thailand...therefore a bit pricey. But it is here just not readily available.

I purchased a couple of sheets of Dow Roofmate directly from local rep. They have 1" and 2" (2'x4' sheets). Unfortunately I can't recall the price but I can dig up his contact info if you are interested.

Also try Khun Rajen at "Home Builders" he is familiar with all things roofing, a great, friendly resource. He spent about 20 years or so building in the states and has been back here in Thailand for another 20 or so years dealing with "specialized" types of western type construction. When I last purchased some roofing products from him the subject of rigid insulation came up. He said he used to import it and might still have a source.

Good luck, please report back on your findings!

  8. Maybe that's the one I was looking for when I found the other. They both look similar. I wonder if anyone here has attended both and can offer a comparison.

I've been to both, there is definitely a lot of overlap between the two. But from what I recall the Architect Show has a lot of booths where designers/builders/moo baans are offering their services, also more furniture and domestic wares. Its geared more towards consumers and people who might hire an architect. Where as I think the Buildtech show has more materials, fabricators, some light manufacturing, etc. Slightly focused more on the construction part of the process not the designing part. Buildtech is still pretty consumer friendly, not as industrial as say http://www.metalex.co.th/ or http://www.intermachshow.com/.

I say go to both, I always find something to be interested in.

  9. I have yet to find it myself. I was planning on using double L's just like suggested above as reveals for some interior finishes.

Just last week I asked my aluminum window installer about it, he swears it exists. I'll report back if he comes up with something.

  10. I've seen it at stationary stores near universities. I think I've seen it at the Suksapan store at Future Park Rangsit (there are several Suksapan locations ..http://www.suksapan.or.th/). Its definitely around, my students use it. What I have yet to see though is Basswood for model making..I've never been that satisfied with the texture/grain of balsa wood for scale models. I would recommend that you go to Bang Po (Soi Furniture) and get some sheets of nice veneer. Just laminate to get the thickness you need.

  11. If you'd really like to take control switch primer colors too. They likely used the red color for the first coat....have them switch to grey for the welds so that you can more easily verify where they've reprimed. Then have them paint the whole thing in a third color, white (that way you can see where rust is forming).

...At least that's what I did for my house.

  12. There are a couple discussions that cover the merits (or futility) of lightning rod systems. But I am specifically looking for a retail location that sells the parts, my electrician is willing to install the equipment if I supply the materials. I have a steel house with a steel roof so I would be needing aluminum conductor cable and the associated aluminum parts.

Anyone know of a source for parts/cable etc?

    Thanks!

  13. A lock set / dead bolt was one of the few things for my house that my father in law insisted I would need to bring with me from the states. I certainly wouldn't trust the quality of a Thai brand lock but it seems there are plenty of imported, high quality options locally (at Bangpo and also Crystal Design Center).

If you are there and coming back here then I would go ahead and buy what you need at Home Depot for a fraction of what you would pay here, have some spare keys made, pick up one of those installation kits and you're set.

  14. It looks like BR are jiggering their TPE-BKK-TPE schedules. They were supposed to expand, but that expansion has been pulled back, and they may be further reductions.

BR updates their schedules on 9 Sep 2011. Still looking into this; only the TPE-BKK-TPE segments seem affected. Will follow up.

You're right. It appears BKK to TPE is the problem.

If I query TPE-LAX-TPE I can get a ticket....but BKK-LAX-BKK is still unavailable. Unless EVA is going to pull out of Thailand altogether I can't see what the problem is.

  15. Hmmm. Slightly more reassuring to find that other airlines are doing the same thing. It just so happens that when I checked CathayPacific and Thai I was able to get prices.

Seems a little ridiculous that I can't plan 3 months ahead of time to make arrangements for international travel. I guess I could understand a rolling window where they were reticent to commit to prices, but a calendar year seems pretty irrelevant to this situation.

  16. I have been trying off and on over the last few weeks to check prices for BKK to LAX in January 2012 on EVAAIR.com and I keep getting "We’re sorry! There is no available fare to fit your itinerary. Please contact us for assistance."

I've booked many tickets directly with them and never had any problems (except when they canceled the BKK to NYC flight). At first I thought it was some strange computer glitch but this morning I finally called and was told that "Prices aren't available for next year yet...Maybe at the end of this month...An agent won't have prices either." <deleted>!?

Does anyone else think this is strange? Is EVA going under or something!? Is there anyone out there that has tickets booked for 2012 with EVA?

  17. You could try a store at Bangpo (Soi Furniture) called "Thai Fitting". They have a section with all kinds of locks, hinges, handles on display. It is a step above Homepro/work for sure.

I just tried looking for a website for them, all I came across was a splash page that appears to be them. They are about 50-75 meters in from the beginning of the Soi on the right hand side.

While at Soi furniture you'll come across plenty of Hafele displays and I believe that "UFAM" (a Thai Hafele) is located around there as well.

  18. I hope you never have a fire in your roof. These foams are very inflammable and highly toxic....Do some fire research first.

PU Foam contains a fire retardant agent. Tested to B2 (DIN 4102).

My understanding (based on my extensive interweb research skillz) is that the foam is self-extinguishing under "normal" conditions, it won't burn without a continuous flame present. HOWEVER it is apparently possible to create a 'perfect storm' condition where the great insulating qualities of the material can allow a fire to build up such an intense heat that the foam basically spontaneously combusts regardless of the addition of any fire retardants (my interpretation of what I've read). The simple solution according to ASTM E-119 Section R314.5.3 ATTICS is to use an "ignition barrier"...protect the foam with gyp board, sheet metal, even particleboard board can apparently work for this. This is easier to accomplish when you spray on the underside of the roofing and have a vaulted "cathedral" type ceiling. I am a fan of a sealed attic condition (and this crusty old ASHRE paper (pdf) seems to support that), Crossy however appears to prefer a vented type attic. Which ever makes you sleep better at night, just don't mix the two approaches.

Please feel free to correct me or draw your own conclusions. We all like to prove ourselves right but I would certainly appreciate links to articles or tests that both support or refute anything about this topic.
