  1. Whats your current adsl speeds/line stats like ? 4km is starting to reach the limit all depends on quality of line, and it speeds fall off the further way depending on line noise.

Oddly enough I normally get around 5Mbps DL but running the TV test its showing less than 1Mbps.

I'm between a rock and a hard place here do I kleep trying to get a microwave link, get a new ADSL line run in and pick up the additional monthly or go fiber.

Maybe ask tot how much for a new phone line installed up there if its not to expensive give it shot?

Fibre, or Adsl extenders linked above basically same thing, how much is copper in Thailand at the moment? Also with the copper if you go that way may need to include the cost of surge/lighting protection.

Price them up and see which is cheaper out of all three :)

  2. ADSL is usually limited to about 4km but I believe it can work up to about 7km with a corresponding drop in speed. So it depends on the distance (cable length, not line of sight) between your ADSL modem and TOT's DSLAM.

But if the meditation centre is only 1km further away than where you already have ADSL then it would seem hopeful.

I thought the total length from switch to hub was 3km if you are saying 4km+ then that has to be the answer.

I found a bit of kit that was effectively POE that would run to 1KM or CATx OR basic RJ11 from the us for 350USD. IMO getting TOT to run a new line is going to be the cheapest and also allow isolation of bandwidth for when the meditation sessions are being broadcast.

    Thanks for the other replies.

  3. For cherybl

Maybe wifi router or access point with a external aerial , depends on what is in between can you see the roof of their house from your house roof?

If you have a wifi router already maybe put it outside on a extention cord(doesnt need to be plugged in to phone line) to test the wifi strength and see if you can see it at one of the houses.

Maybe talk to a local tech shop about a external aerial, if its mounted outside you have to consider lighting protection. Its not something I have looked at for ages, check out http://www.air-stream.org.au/

  4. It is a great game and has lots of things to do the learning curve is high, but if you havent played it for while the new tutorial system is quite good and explains things alot more, also there is a lot of web sites with information now

and if you cant find something to do check out

Find a corp to join best thing you can do to meet people and do different things in game.

  5. You could use windows way suggested above on a amazon ec2 small windows instance(or linux if you're inclined) if you need more bandwidth then a home adsl link in the uk. If you dont run it all the time can be cheap and quite fast to start up and you can just pause the instance and wont be charged till you unpause it again.

Also i think Hide my ass has a free advert supported version or did havent looked for while.

  6. In all the time I have been in Thailand there have been so many mates from back home asking me if I have started "batting for the other side". They generalize that blokes coming to Thailand like men and ladyboys.

    How true is this generalization?

Does Thailand have a higher percentage of bisexual expat men than other countrys like Hong Kong, Spain, Norway?

I have been here a lot of years and now think that some acts performed by those half women half men would be accpetable for a red-blooded Aussie bloke like me. 10 years ago it would have shocked me.

Does living in Thailand a bloke?

Sexuality his a hard question for anyone. Someone in this thread said you don't choose your sexuality you are born with, while i agree with the born with it bit, we do discover, try, experiment and with our sexuality to discover who we are and come to grips with their sexuality. The coming to grips part because of the way society etc is and the and also way people are brought up can make harder or easier for some people to discover there sexuality and this can also cause some people not to able to come to grips with their sexuality(Suicide rates are much higher among gay/lesbian etc teens).

As for why many guys that come to Thailand who their mates(maybe not themselves) would class as straight, come back bi, gay what ever. Main reason would be peer pressure from their friends especially when in groups out somewhere. Most western countries even though it is changing with the each younger generation, its still seen as negative to be gay or bi by a lot of people. So these guys who might be coming back from thailand may have just discovered and come to grips with part of their sexuality. Which may not have been possible for them back home because of societies views and peer pressure. This I think is because its more out in the open and is just there in thailand and sexuality doesnt matter that much there. So they feel more free from soceities views and peer pressure(is there on holiday with one or two people normally best friends) as they are away from home and no one knows them so they feel more relaxed as their sexuality doesnt matter in thailand, so they are more free to experinment and discover who and what they are.

After working in a gay nigtspot for so long in a western country, I see this alot guys coming in with groups of people, who meet somone they like the look off may flirt alittle etc etc, but because of the people they are with dont want to be seen to me gay or bi. I have seen guys come back by themselves the next night or week again after this happens, to discover their sexuallity a bit more without the fear of having to be labeled by their friends.

Sexuality itself is hard to define its easy if a person just likes guy or just likes girls or both. But what about the ones inbetween those, some people only like to do certain things with other people of the same sex or sexual hybrids(transexuals and transvesttes etc). Some people like transexuals pre op some post op. The list goes on defining somones sexuality into our own labels and boxes is hard they never seem to fit because each person has their own view of their sexuality. In the end does it matter ? Who cares if people come back from thailand bi or gay or whatever after discovering their own sexuality, long as its consenting of legal consenting age, its not a problem for society and society shouldnt make it a problem for people. But unfortunalty for some parts of society it is, but that is slowly chaning which i regard as good.

These are just my view and opinions on this, shrug i dont claim to be right but above is just a short amound of can be discussed on this topic.

  7. How many places could he go to with a Nicaraguan passport without a visa?

    Even a diplomatic one?

Uhm ...just about every country in the world? And do you really think that Dr. Thaksin, with billions of dollars, couldn't get a visa to any country in the world if he needed it?

I seem to remember him getting knocked back by the UK just recently?

and I would be very surprised if australia gave him one at the moment.

  8. That's the idea of a business, to make money.

Can't expect a site to run for free or break even point, if it was your site you would refuse advertising after a certain point, would you turn away money ?

    I don't think so.

Yes i know the idea of a business is to make money. I think they are good on them.

Would I refuse advertising after a certain point, yes if it was making the eyeballs the advertising were meant for angry and not coming back again to put eyeballs further more on adds. As it does not make business sense.

And again I didnt say i expect the site to be run for free and i dont. They were your words not mine.

  9. Sure, the owner need to make some profit with that forum as well, like you need to make profit with your business!

The cost for to run a forum like this are very high. It's not the Hard- and Software alone which cost a lot of money! The cost of the Internet Connection and the used Bandwith is very high as well!

Did you guys know how much you've to pay for a 1 Mbps up/down leased line for an SME? That's in Thailand just a little as above THB 50,000 a month for. To run a dedicated server in an communication center is even more expensive an the higher the speed you need the higher the cost plus the cost for connection sharing and and and!

And TV has much more than just 1 Mbps! Otherwise TV wouldn't able to handle that huge amount of daily connection/traffic!

It would be very interesting to know how much you guy's are willing to pay every month for to use an forum like this Add-Free? And at the moment you calculate your budget for that, don't forget to add the all the cost and even the profit the owner has to make to your calculation!

    Cheers.

Yes bandwidth can be expensive, most people in this discussion so far have not advocated total removal off the adverts just they are on overload since more adverts have been added. But in your posts so far you are grandstanding that people expect the site to be add free and the owner cover the costs i have not seen anyone in this thread state that yet.

Maybe some people would pay for it to be add free many sites do have this availbable, maybe the owners should think about working what they think would be a reasonable fee and see if members who want to pay it find it acceptable.

Also I dont think you should be crying poor for the owners to much, one popular blog in thailand was making 10000 baht a month from one google advert bar with 2500 visits a day. Considering TV has 4 or 5 ? and averages about 2500 visitors a hour making that 60,000 visits a day. Thats around 960,000 baht a month at a very ruff guess per month. Not including contracted adds or commmisions from the travel, car rental etc etc

  10. Have to say, that the case is similar in Australia were I live (work in a gay night club) and most of the younger people tend to have missed the boat here for the sexual health message add that to the mix of of drugs (which basically makes then do anything, know people who have woken up in bed with multiple other people and cant remeber anything)doesnt make for a good picture in the next 10 to 20 years. Also I think they havent seen what it can do as they were not around when lots of people were dieing from it. The drugs extend living periods greatly now as well so its not so in ya face.

  11. I read somewhere that the discontinuation of Internet services in any western country would cause that country's economy to collapse within 48 hours.

I don't know where you may have read this, but it is pretty nonsensical.

There might be disruptions, of which the most recent catastrophic type would have been nine-eleven. But a discontinuation is all but impossible, given that the networks are heavily meshed (i.e., alternate paths) and built of highly redundant, high availabilty technology. It is common practice for these kinds of businesses to have multiple voice and internet access points with more than one provider.

The only way someone might have any sort of chance of doing this would be simultaneous attacks on all major undersea fiber routes. But these are heavily guarded, if not inaccessible. Even if this were to occur, mission critical traffic would still be routed through other redundant system. There might be a lot of outages, packet loss, latency, etc.

Even though I agree with you that 48hours is nonsensical.

This happend last year http://it.slashdot.org/it/08/02/06/1431206.shtml in the middle east.

Also before the southern cross cable was finished in 2000 Australia had major problems from the sea cable being cut.

Which makes Australia better able to cop with cable cuts as it has a dual cables which are in ring formation.

There was a major slow down though when one of these was damaged a couple of years ago.

    :o

  12. I couldnt find simons43 post to quote it, good on you for writing the app, but there are serveral out there that will do this already which are gpl-ed if you have a look at them it might save you some work :D eg squid proxy even apache webserver can be configured to do it :D

If somone is not that tech inclined smoothwall and ipcop provide this and more and its bascially plug and play, adsl router in one port inside network on another network port and bobs ya uncle :o

Smooth wall is also capable of Instant message logging, (have a think about that next time you send confidential stuff in a IM in a netcafe) *shudder*

  13. I'm assuming Simon's providing access through his rooms - thus he would automatically know which guest accessed what site, without requiring the user to provide further ID or login.

How? If guests connect their own laptops to the hotel network (wireless or ethernet- same same), they would get a "local" network IP address assigned automatically via DHCP from the router. There would still need to be some way to know who was assigned to each local IP.

Depending on the network gear he using (eg the switch) the switch can act as a dhcp server and assign the ip address to a certain port on the switch, the wire runs from the switch to the room so they know which room number it is.

If there using wirless as well ,most probably easier to provide them with a login when they check in even if they dont use it or not.

  14. Yeah it is just another tool :D and use it regularly, somtimes the old photos, lies about age and stuff can get to you though :D I guess you never know were you might meet a partner(long or short term) :D l wouldnt discount a taco shop lol ive met some guys who have just been walking past me in the city :o (in australia). Gay bars/clubs tend for me to be a place for me which is safe you can be who youre true self and it dont matter and i think they are there for more then just pickning up(eg to go out with mates and hav fun) and id interview them on the next date after we met and swapped numbers at a club :D I dont like loud noise either loosing my voice form screaming at somone so they can hear you is not fun and managers/owners who let djs dictate volume levels need to be whipoed, in a no pleasureable way that is heheheh

I remember classifieds, come from a small country town there was a classified board in the the one and only sex shop which had some gay ones on it, working up to the courage to go in there was scary, it was seen then as bad enough going into sex shop let along what i wanted to gain from it heheheh

I am so glad attidues have been and still are getting better all over the world. Hopefully they will keep getting better might cut the youth suicdie rate bit.

edit: Thinking about this after maybe we have the internet partially to thank for for the change in attitudes as its been easier for people to talk to each other and know they arent the only one and there are people out there like them ?

  15. I still do believe in romantic love but recognize it is a belief system, maybe even a kind of faith based on western culture.

Consider this, if you go to bar and see 100 people, maybe just maybe you will feel some kind of connection with one person there, if you are lucky. The others you just know it isn't there. I am not just talking about looks, I am talking about a feeling that for whatever reason, is just there.

After working in nightclubs and bars for over 10yrs i do agree with you(its the eye thing(thats what i call it LOL), but i think its caused by the stuff ijwt said above. e.g. somewhere in our minds somthing is going ping like could the way his eyes are shaped, way his hair falls etc etc but tis something you just cant put your finger on(the subconscious0. Then he seems to look into your eyes, if you get a smile as well HELLO! :o,

So consider the internet, you screen, you preen, you vaseline, your computer match fits you to a tee. Then you meet, Turns out he in real life does nothing for you. Or you for him. Or both. Well, maybe OK for a sex date but I mean a real connection. Most of the time, that is exactly how it is on the internet.

Lol internet dating where to start, some of my best friends i met years ago on gay IRC channels, then every man and their dog got modem, and web chat was invented and that made it easier for people to get online, including the physcos there is nice people still out there online though its just signal to noise ratio has changed.

I try and chat with them on msn a bit more and then have coffee or somthing first (even if it is just for sex) and tell them we will meet have chat see if we like each other and go from there if there is spark, wether it be just or sex or maybe anohter date.
