  1. Has anyone read or heard anything "official" about the possibility that in the immediate future insurance will be required for non O visas. It's such an obvious loophole I would imagine the government would try to counteract it.? I certainly do not want to buy useless insurance, but I am 73, at 75 it is virtualy impossible to start insurance, you can only renew.  Switching to O now could mean I'll be too old to get a policy when the government gets around to requiring it for O.

  2. The wording on the directive says that the extension will be issued for the remaining duration of the policy up to one year. I interpret this to mean if you have 8 months left on the policy the extension will be for that period. You may find it difficult to get these insurers to issue the policy on the exact date you need, and you need to apply safely early as you don't know how long the underwriting, payment and certificate issuance could take.

  3. Pacific Cross insurance offers a few policies that are allegedly approved for the requirements of OA Visa. Premiums can be reduced greatly (up to 50%) by accepting a deductible of up to 300,000. For many of us with preexisting conditions and would in all likelihood never be able to benefit from the insurance, this is a good way to keep the cost down and keep immigration happy.

The issue is whether or not policies with deductibles from Pacific Cross will actually be OK. I've read different posts from expats who have heard directly from someone at Pacific Cross. The answer' are both yes and no. Very confusing. I've been in contact with a sales rep named Mr. Mc Dermott who says the deductibles are approved.  I'd hate to get the policy and then be denied at immigration because they are not OK. What have others heard on this from Pacific Cross and what level of management?

  4. I'm 73 and have been researching health insurance. Can find only 4 companies that will cover my age. I have pre-existing conditions and am concerned that they might not offer a policy. Has anyone heard anything from their immigration office about an alternative: ie: more money in the bank? I've searched the web and can not find more information including immigration or ministry of health websites. I would appreciate the information.

  5. The Thai Visa news article says "extention of stay" will not require health insurance. But if you scroll down to the copies of the official immigration notices, you will see criterion for "extention of stay" The first chart criterion #6 clearly specifies the need for health insurance for "extention of stay".  To make it more confusing when you go to the seccond criterion chart under that the wording is extremely confusing.  I plan to wait until after Oct 31 then go talk to my local immigration office, maybe by then it will be  more clear.  Since the official announcement has anyone actualy talked to their immigration office as to whether or not insurance is needed for "Extention of stay" ? I'm glad I have till next September to get this sorted out.  Prior to this announcement my very helpful Immigration officers said that if you have been here 5 years-no insurance needed. But if you do need insurance and cant qualify  just show 3 million in the bank. Go figure...

  6. Same situation at our house. They're everywhere. I found a simple cheap solution on the internet. Mix a half cup of dish washing liquid (use the cheap makro stuff) with 5 litre of water in sprayer (or equivalent amounts). Spray them directly and they will die in about 2-5 minutes.  You can experiment with the quantity, I just do it by eye. It really works and is cheap, because you will need to spray frequently. It does not harm my plants. If you can find them,  saturate the nests.

  7. I went to my immigration office in Phitsanulok. Spoke with 3 different officers, and my wife spoke with them in Thai. Limited English but the gist of it was that "extention to stay" would not require health insurance. How informed they really are, I'm not sure. In my experience it is not uncommon for Thais to offer information they do not really know. Nonetheless its positive. We've got to just wait for something more official.

  8. I plan to "extend my stay" in Thailand (retirement) in Phitsanulok in September. Did any of you ask them to CONFIRM that the health insurance WILL NOT apply to "extensions of stay" I would appreciate hearing from somebody about Phitsanulok in particular. Though Thai Visa article says it DOES NOT AFFECT "extensions of stay", there a lot of contradictory information. I 'd like to hear it from the "horses mouth".
