  1. Farang cannot meet the requirements of owning a handgun in Thailand under most circumstances, but those working for the police or military may have special permits granted.

But if your married to a Thai girl who owns her own home, has a business and a decent sum of money in the bank she can apply for the license.   It can take a year to get the license and lots of paperwork.

Then you can go down to the gun shops in Charoen Krung Rd  and get royally screwed on what you choose.  Of course you can buy something of Chinese origin and get less screwed, but best case scenario is you will pay 3 times as much for a hand gun as you would in the USA.

BIL bought a Beretta 92 and without accessories or ammo it was almost 110k baht.

  2. "Third world country" is fine, 'Developing country' is OK too! Both descriptions fit the bill.

We could make a list why it is so:

1/ Rampant and endemic corruption despite the alleged attempts to stamp it out.

    2/ Human rights violations.

3/ Poorly regulated and poorly policed transport system.

4/ Infastructure poorly constructed and badly maintained.

5/ Care for the disabled and elderly almost non-existant.

Feel free to add whatever you think should be on the list!

  3. So, going by this "Nawin Sintusa-ard, vice governor of Chiang Mai, said the rail link to Den Chai supports the province's urban plan that promotes the northern Lanna culture as the soul of the North's tourism and international trade. "

There is going to be a big increase in foreigners going to that area by train instead of by bus, car, or motorbike? International trade....so that means what? Containers going out of the country filled with rice? Any going to China would have to be put on to standard gauge flat cars at an intermodal facility.

I can't see any logic in this.

Maybe it will become clear to me when they settle on a route......but maybe not! rolleyes.gif

  4. You appear to have a pretty good grasp of horticulture - but the first step i would take is identify the beetle. You can't progress unless you know what it is. From the description i would guess Harlequin beetle

    Harlequin-Bugs-400x269.jpg

or does it look more like this ? the Broonze Orange bug. (stink beetle) they emit a nasty solution that stains the leaves and fruit for market and smells putrid )

Once identified then read up on the life cycle of the insect and spray when the insect is in the breeding stage with an appropriate spray. Most likely a systemic spray for sap suckers will be necessary , but it does mean the bark and fruit will transport a deadly chemical so strictly observe your withholding periods. . Look up Integrated pest Management for further information .and you find out how to save money and unnecessary use of chemical and often organic sprays will work very efficiently by knowing the right time in the life cycle to spray. By looking at the life cycle also take into account your location, weather conditions and micro climates and so on that may slightly alter the life cycle.

Also , what is the bird life like there in your area. If you are spraying indiscriminately and your neighbors are doing it too then a lot of the natural predators will be absent.

Neither of the above. I did describe them Hard wing cases and various colours, two different greens, also grey, fawn brown & mottled. Always in pairs and almost always humping. They munch on leaves, not suck sap. They prefer the newest sweetest leaves near end of branches.

They look a bit like this

Next time that you are at the market, buy some loose tobacco in a bundle. Make a tea by putting it in a bucket in the sun covered with water. After a few days, draw off the water and use that for a spray.

Hi there, haven't see tobacki leaf in the local market. We use tobacki and alcohol balls instead. Drop em in the tank and their mixed with the water by the time we get out the orchard.

  5. It's stressful to me employing Thai's to do jobs. When the builder (I use that term loosely!) was here building the new shed I lost the bottle 3 times! Twice they didn't turn up for work the next day cause I upset the poor darlings.

So don't give me the story their stressed....because they create the problem themselves with their slack attitude and shoddy work practices.

  6. "One police friend said he saw a suspect carrying a black bag, believed to have contained a gun, ran into a white Honda Civic with no license plate and flee after the shooting." Yet he never made any attempt to pursue the suspect??? Probably needed backup if he did but really, what kind of police don't pursue suspects? Yes I do know this happened in LOS. whistling.gif

  7. The problem is that costs will increase if their wages go up. It's pretty simple really.

If Somchai employs 200 workers for 300 baht a day which = 60.000 baht and sells product at X price and has to now pay his 200 workers 390 baht = 78.000 baht a day, so X becomes X + 30% which is passed on to everyone!

And that applies to 10's of thousands of workplaces around LOS.

All because Thai's live beyond their means.

  8. When I said "Buy, maintain and register the car in your name" that includes rego & insurance. Your sticking you neck out going guarantor, so you may as well do it my way and pay the ongoing costs and have at least the opportunity to claim the car if it ll goes wrong. If it goes right it's between you and the family member, no loss of face for anyone.
