  1. Friendship charges you for doing a u-turn through their car park ! Bt10 or Bt20. Then, no matter how much you spend, you only get an hour shopping on your ticket or charges start to rack up.

I have stopped shopping at Friendship because of this very thing. It leaves a very bad taste in the mouth.

I've lived here a long time but I really get tired of the nickel 'n diming that goes on.

Soon 7-11 will be charging for plastic straws!

I was asked to pay 5 baht extra for a fill-up of ice for my drink the other day.

It's not the money, it is the constant gimme gimme that gets up my nose.

I don't care whether the demand comes with a smile or not!

and if you look at it with the shoe on the other foot you will see that they are sick of people taking taking taking .....

    natural reaction really.

Why should you be allowed to do a free U turn theough their private property! ?

  2. The Avenue. Hidden 100 Baht carpark surcharge after midnight

Tonight I used the Avenue Carpark on Second Road, arriving at 11:02 pm when the carpark was emptying with many clear spaces. I did some shopping at Villa Supermarket and then decided to take a Baht Bus into town.

I returned at 3:05am and was prepared to pay the extra 40 Baht parking fee.

So you've used it for free/cheap parking for 4 hours !

Seems fair that you should pay extra.

  3. Thanks to the actions of the PAD, personally I had a trip to Thailand cancelled and with my refund (no travel insurance will cover me due to civil unrest), I will personally be $1000.00 AUD out of pocket. So thanks <deleted>, your criminal behaviour cost me a holliday.

    Whats the cost to you?

    How trite.

they were fighting for more than just a freakn holiday!

  4. Now that the 'yellows' have given the airports back to the people, I wonder what kind of mess they left?? If it is anything like the mess they left at the govmt. houses, I can guess it is really nasty, with thoousands living in public places.

Wil the 'elite yellows' clean up after themselves....or be like the children they are and leave it to others to clean for them.

not really needed to ask, someone else will have to clean it up... wont they?

    :o

  5. A friend brought over an answer machine from the uk. The phone plug on the phone does not fit in a thai telephone socket, I have tried some of the electrical shops in Central but to no avail.

Any sugestions or does anyone wish to purchase an answer machine?

you must be doing something wrong the telephone wires are the sam,e

  6. No such thing as 'salt herring' in Thailand. Herring is a cold waterfish.

Though the Thai like all kinds of meat and fish, salted and stuck in a pot for a while, they don't really like Dutch herring.

A friend of mine who has a restaurant in CNX asks friends and tourists who come to CNX another time, to bring some herring from Holland.

Herring is a frozen fish (mandatory by government) and if you pack the fish well in bubble foil or newspaper than it will survive the trip. Eate it myself and aroi maak.

To speak of this restaurant 'The Wall' at Ratchaviti road they also serve kroketten en frikandellen made by some dutch guys. Great taste and the frikandellen even taste more like meat than in Holland. I talked to the man from The Wall and he told me that some more restaurants are serving the kroket and frikandel.

He also gave me the e-mail address as they also deliver to private people.

Dunno if I can spread the e-mail in this forum but let's try. [email protected]

kroket dan bread is the BEST snack!

  7. Did she not see the baggage allowance printed on her ticket and as part of the contract she undertook when she purchased her ticket? If so, why does she believe that the conditions don't actually apply to her?

What, and you've never carried more than you were allowed? you always stuck strictly to the carry on limits?

  8. I have been working in Thailand for the last nine years, mainly as a teacher. On September 13 I turned 65 so I flew to Australia and applied for the pension. I was told that I would be informed within 2 to 3 weeks. I returned a week later to LOS. After hearing nothing in a month I rang Centrelink and was told that I should hear something in the next week. After 8 week had elapsed I rang again and was told that my application was rejected on the grounds that I was living in Thailand. I was since told that to recieve it I would need to return and stay in Australia for a period of 2 years. I could then return here. I am an Australian citizen and worked most of my life in Australia and paid taxes. I have a Thai partner and 6 year old son which I didn't mention about in my application as I didn't think it relevant in my application. Should I have mentioned this fact. I would much appreciate if anyone else has had a similar experience because it seems that I will be condemed to a 2 yr term in Australia.

    good planning there.

  9. ....I don'tlike to sound cynical,..DingDonggrb,...but your sister in law who received sinsod from Thai chap, u wouldn't happen to have any idea how the farang father/mother inlaw spent the money?.....new pickup truck perhaps? :o

Dee, You need to reread my post... It was a Thai man who married my Thai sister-in-law and he paid my Thai M/F in-law sinsot..... No farangs involved.... My point was being that not only farangs pay sinsot but Thais do too......

quite true, but easier to think its a thai conspiracy to rob farangs of their wealth

  10. Someone has probably posted this by now . . . but anyway, want to share my favorite 'western' restaurant in BKK.

Its called 13 Coins, or 13 เหรียญ. Its a chain restaurant, with one like a 5 minute walk from my gfs place so I go fairly often.

You can get tons of different types of really good western food. A lot of the stuff isn't exactly made the way its supposed to, but still tastes really really yummy for a western tongue.

I especially like the steak dinners - ranging between 150 and 300 baht, depending. Yeap, $4 for a steak dinner!

They also have live music, but usually the singers aren't that great and usually only sing Thai music. Still ok music though, especially for the price. :o

sounds great, but whjere is it?

  11. My perspective is from just a computer user, and I have really not looked into this in a technical way, just looking at the difference between some notebooks displays it seems the screen choice is basically

Non glossy matt non LED backlit

    Non glossy matt LED backlit

    Glossy non LED backlit

    Glossy LED backlit

From seeing the above in general use it seems to me that the overall sharper , clearer, and better color display

looks to come from the Glossy LED backlit option ( glossy = enhance colors ) , although I am sure many will not like the glossy screen because of reflections .

my non too technical question is this, is a glossy screen , just a matt screen , but with a glossy front over it ..?

and what's your thoughts and opinion on the Matt Vs Glossy screen's

    TL

battery power is a big factor.

  12. I am single and don't pay for any Thai families now. But I do send my mother in the US money each month, so if I married a Thai woman, why wouldn't I send her parents money if they needed it?

I have dated a few Thai women who were much wealthier than me, so that wouldn't have been an issue for them, but I have dated more women who made less than 20,000 baht or who came from very poor families, so if I loved a woman like from that economic spheret, and if we married, I think it would only be appropriate to help out her family.

    well said.

  13. So I finally got my internet going perfectly in ubuntu by switching my wireless adapter and a week later my apartment decided to change the connection from just accepting a mac address from the adapter to now requiring the fashionable login with password through the web browser.

in windows this has no problem and the internet works flawlessly, but in ubuntu i can't do anything through port 80 (synaptic and updates all use port 80 as well). to confuse me even further i can use other ports with other programs such as pigeon, skype, thunderbird (all of which work fine). using 3 separate browsers in ubuntu all configured the same way as i have in windows (no proxy or auto detect proxy) however nothing will connect to the web. i can't figure out what the cause would be.

does anyone know if i can redirect my web browser through another port to connect to the web without inputting a proxy?

    get you own internet.

or get a gongle and steal some wireless from elsewhere.

  14. So I have a question.

Do all the people that think it is wrong to help support the in-laws, not support their own parents ? Or have they foisted them off to an old-age home and forgotten about them ?

there aint no government help here, would you let family members die! ? :o
