  1. I have been in Bangkok over a year and not single moment could I imagine myself bored in here. There are too many things to do and even more places to visit. Great places within a reasonable distance to travel in length and time. What do you like to do? Are you a fan of sports? Art? Music? Google is your friend in here :)

  2. I wouldn't worry. If the teaching is in English, people will be happy to speak English both in and outside the classroom. I barely speak any Thai, but never had any problems mixing with the Thais. They have been happy to speak English with me. For some people it is easier than for the others. I'm talking of course about Assumption University.

  3. "No, the science is unsettled, acting as a cover to impose new taxes"

I cannot believe there are so many republicans on this forum to see twisted percentages like this. The governments may have failed in some parts of battling the climate change by imposing foolish taxes or supporting wrong kind of means. I do think media along with Al Gore are making it sound frightening to sell more newspapers but leading scientists do not disagree about the subject itself. 9/11, evolution vs. fundamentalists go in the same category with people who do not believe in global warming.. denialists, not sceptics.

  4. Harcourt, you should know that most are put on the streets by gangs that also collect majority of the money. People are brought from Burma and Cambodia. The women renting out their children to beg so that some who think they are good-hearted are really just buying the gangs more ice and keeping the business going.

Don't get me wrong, I want to help the suffering. Previously mentioned, however, is not the right way to do it. I will give my pennies to helping organizations.

  5. We should "organzie" the original poster some psychiatric help. Boycott for what? Considering that things have improved over the past few years (excluding the global economy), I see your idea as pointless. You said you left three years ago and haven't returned back. Why on earth are you posting on this forum then?

  6. You have to be really, really stupid to give money to beggars. It only makes it worse. You're basically funding their suffering and sponsoring further begging. Thanks guys.

I think it is clear which is worse.

  7. I would be amazed if you cannot find that in some of the local markets. Have you tried Jatujak? Bring a picture with you and possibly an explanation in Thai when you go and look for it. I have not seen them personally, though. One option for you is to build it by yourself or order from abroad.

  8. For BBA, there are only a few that you should probably consider. Chulalongkorn, Mahidol and Thammasat Universities. You can easily search their websites for faculty in their international programs. I would add Assumption University to the list, but you said you prefer foreign teachers, so you are better off with the government's top three (assuming they have bigger percentage of foreign lecturers, not sure though). Investigate what courses they offer and how established the program is. You will make the right choice for yourself.

There is no violence amongst BBA students for sure :)

  9. I haven't witnessed this in my area which has thousands of university students in the area. Very calm, sophisticated and peaceful in terms of violence or other disturbance (except the "race drivers"). Thank you for reporting though. Recently there was a shooting between two universities in front of MBK, which proves though that this stuff exists.

  10. A simple calculation:

Energy saving lamp (12 W) lasts for 8000 hours during which time it consumes 96 kWh.

    4 Baht/kWh makes it 384 Baht during it's lifetime.

Incandescent lamp (60 W) consumes 480 kWh during the same time, which makes it 1920 Bah.

One should also bear in mind that incandescent lamps warm up the room due to being less energy efficient (95 % heat, 5 % light), increasing the A/C energy consumption.

  11. I have found the energy saving fluorescent bulbs to be much longer lasting if you are lucky enough to find a good brand (not Chinese). LEDs would be much better if they offered them at a reasonable price in Thailand, something which I'm not aware of. For comparison, fluorescent bulb beats incandescent 15W to 60W in energy consumption. The thing about mercury is that the when producing extra amount of energy that an incandescent lamp uses, more mercury is released in the air than what a fluorescent bulb contains (less than 4 mg in quality lamps).

  12. so if you believe in yourself to be a great student and don't really care about reputation, by all means go to abac because that's where most of the international students are out of all the thai universities.

This is why I went to ABAC myself. The degree isn't going to get me a job and I'm not expecting it to do so. There are plenty of brilliant students and an equal amount of slackers. Works for myself and many others, though.

I'm truly speaking from experience when I say the quality is underrated here in Thaivisa, having an experience from a better university than Chula is (previous studies).

  13. Lots of ABAC students go to Ramkhamhaeng because they are lazy brats and cannot fill up their 80% attendance requirements and they keep failing the courses because of high standard (thus never graduate). About half of the people in Calculus I fail the course on first try (maybe that half are just crap students). I cannot understand how this school is crap when some people who graduate from ABAC get into Ivy League schools for masters.
