Does anyone know of a good digital camera repair shop in Chiang Mai that can work on Nikon cameras? Does not need to be factory authorized. Thanks.

Excellent article! I have been driving in Thailand for 20 years and the author is spot on. Once people get behind the tinted glass their personalities seem to change. One thing to also take into consideration when driving, if you see twigs, branches, and leaves in the road, slow down! There seems to be a shortage of portable road hazard signs and flares in Thailand, so branches are often used to indicate trouble ahead.

2 hours ago, masuk said:A good example was using an abandoned quarry in Chiang Mai as a swimming pool.
It was extremely deep, and according to press reports, there were no life lines, no lifesaving float rings, no ladders.
For many children, jumping in was a lot of fun - and final!
The danger was extremely obvious - but no one acted on it.
On the plus side, Rotary in Chiang Mai were running swimming classes for kids.
Dear Masuk, thank you for mentioning the CM International Rotary Club Children's Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Program. We are still going strong, now every child who graduates from one of the 11 municipal (tessabon) elementary schools in Chiang Mai will have had the opportunity to complete our survival swimming classes. About 90% successfully complete the course we have taught over 1200 kids in Chiang Mai in the past 4 years and over 2,000 nationwide including programs in Phrao, Patong Beach, Phetchabun, Lampang, and at the BanYa Migrant Learning Centre in Phuket. Anyone interested in learning more about what we do, please personal message me. Long-term plan is to get the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to work together to build a mandatory elementary school program.

There is a bee hive under the roof of our garden sala. We would like it removed without killing them, if possible. Does anyone know of a beekeeper or pest service, preferably in the Hang Dong area, who can do this?

Does anyone know a local Thai optometrist or optician who would be willing to help a local Rotary Club build a vision-screening and free glasses program for poor children in the local Chiang Mai municipal elementary schools? English-speaking ability would be useful, but not a prerequisite. If you know someone could you send me a message with his/her contact information. Thank you.

You are unsung heroes in my eyes but you are doing what the authorities should be doing , however that is another matter . I will p/m you to see if the idea can be brought to my town . Great work and keep it up .
The Thai Ministry of Public Health Non-Communicable Diseases Section is working on this problem with a Merit Maker Drown No More Program, but they have trouble getting the funding they need to make it a truly national program. Swim instruction should be taking place in the elementary schools, we need to get the Ministry of Education involved. We teach 4th-graders, like to start earlier, but little kids require a great deal more supervision in the water, and the costs would skyrocket. We are trying!

How do they drown exactly? Strong currents in rivers, cramping? Just curious. I don't remember children drowning when I was kid except for the odd diving into shallow water accidents.
The basic problem is that only about 25% of the people here in Thailand have learned how to swim. Even kids living on islands often do not know how to swim. Ask the Thais you know, if they can swim, I think you will be surprised how many answer no.

Tragic and all too common, according to the WHO, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1-15 in Thailand! The Chiang Mai International Rotary Club has developed a Children's Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Program and we have taught survival swimming using the Royal Life Saving Society Australian Curriculum to over 1,000 children in Chiang Mai. We have expanded the program to Phuket, Phrao, and Lampang. Next comes Phetchabun and Sakon Nakhon. Personal message me, if you'd like to learn how you can help.

According to the WHO and the Thai Ministry of Health, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 15 years old in Thailand. Most children (about 75% or more) do not know how to swim and they also do not know what to do when they see a friend or relative in trouble in the water. The Chiang Mai International Rotary Club with the support of the U.K.-based Safe Child Thailand Foundation and the Australian Government's Direct Aid Program has developed a 15-hour Children's Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Program based on the Commonwealth Royal Life saving Society program used in Australia. We have developed a network of Thai Rotary Clubs and other NGO's to establish programs in Chiang Mai (over 1,000 4th-graders taught thus far in 3 years at every municipal school in Muang Chiang Mai), Lampang, Patong Beach and coming soon in Petchabun, Sakon Nakhon, and the Banya Literacy Centre in Phuket. The Thai Ministry of Public Health Non-Communicable Disease Division is also expanding their Merit Maker Drown No More Program in many regions of Thailand. We are trying to build programs that will reduce the numbers of these tragic deaths (between 1,000 and 1,500 children drown each year in Thailand). Please message me, if you'd like to learn more or if you would like to help.

I'd contact Lanna Lawyers, they speak English, are based here in Chiang Mai, and they have a website. They have a reasonable package which includes a will, power of attorney, and a living will. I'm sure they would give you a quote for whatever you want and you could decide then if you think it's a good value. They have a table at the Chiang Mai Expats Club meetings too.

Kad Farang Pool near Grace International School and Satit Bilingual School. Kru Garn Swim, watched him teach for years, he's great with kids!! He also coaches a competitive swim team at the pool.

Lanna Lawyers, based in Chiang Mai/Mae Rim. Bruce Lasky is one of the partners in this firm. So, English would not be a problem. There are Thai lawyers in the firm, so Thai law is definitely covered. Lanna Lawyers have a booth at the Chiang Mai Expats Club meetings, if you wanted to check them out.

Any of the Lila Massage places, there are several in Chiang Mai, one very close to Thapae Gate and another close to Wat PhraSingh on Ratchadamnoen (Walking Street). The women employees are ex-prisoners and they studied massage in jail, so they would have a good job when they got out. I've only had the foot massage, and it is always very good. Prices are average and all is 100% above board!

Heartbreaking, but sadly not an isolated event. According to recent WHO and Thai Ministry of Public Health Reports, drowning is the leading cause of death in Thailand for children ages 1-15, over 1,000 die each year. The Thai Ministry of Public Health's Merit Maker-Drown No More Program and Rotary Club programs. are working to reduce this number. My club, the Chiang Mai International Rotary Club will sponsor survival swimming and water safety training for our 1,000th 4th-grader this year. Rotary Clubs in Patong Beach, and Lampang are also sponsoring survival swimming courses for poor children. These courses are based on the Australian version of the Royal Life Saving Society curriculum. With the generous help of the Safe Child Thailand U.K.-based foundation we are seeking to expand to build sustainable school-based survival swimming programs nationwide. Want to learn more or help us with funding, equipment, facility rental, volunteer professional swim instructors (we use Thai instructors and provide training, assessment, and certification opportunities). Personal message me, John Schorr, President Chiang Mai International Rotary Club, more info at www.cmirotary.org

OK, thanks to those who responded. I will try Panthip Plaza third floor and report back here on cost, quality, etc. I really appreciate the TV Chiang Mai Forum!

Does anyone know if there is a service/shop in Chiang Mai that can convert VHS videotapes to digital computer-readable files? Thanks.

I completely agree with the posters above. Warm Heart in Phrao is a great organization and a very worthy recipient of any help you can provide! No organization is more dedicated to helping poor children in our area. Their home for children is 73 kms North of Chiang Mai, contact Michael Shafer and Evelind Schechter they are the couple who founded the organization. Well worth a visit. Or, just go to their website, where they give details about how to help.
Thanks to the poster for giving much needed help to children in our area!

There is a restaurant that serves several Indian dishes in Hang Dong. It is The Venue (formerly Papa Rocks) in Kad Farang. There is very little about the bar/music venue that would suggest they have decent Indian food, but they do. They also serve Western food, and have a good IPA and Tiger on draught.

There is a very nice, well kept 25 meter pool in Tarndong-Parkville, the development behind Kad Farang. The pool is called Kad Farang Swimming Pool and there are swimming lessons offered there by Kru (Teacher) Garn. I have swum laps at this pool for years and observed Kru Garn teaching children of all ages and adults too from many different countries. He's excellent. Kru Garn is also Coach Garn for a large and successful swim team based at Kad Farang Pool.
Good luck

If you are South of Chiang Mai, you may want to check out Kru Garn at Kad Farang Pool in Hang Dong. I swim laps there and have watched him teach children and adults (Thai, Chinese, European, American) for years. He is great! He is also the coach of a very successful swim team based at the pool.

Check out Kru Payu Swim. They have a website and a FB page. They have at least 2 locations toward the north of CM:
1. Bronco Kids Sport Center
2. Near Mee Chok center.
Good people and very professional.

We have used Seven Corners Insurance for the USA, they work with United Healthcare. Good easy application process. $148 for 52 year-old Thai wife for 4 weeks in the USA. $250 deductible, 1 million maximum.
This year will be the third time we used them, never had a claim, so cannot comment on that.
Spinal Cord Injury Epidural Stimulation

Does anyone have experience with 'X (private clinic) and their epidural stimulation treatment for spinal cord injury? The website shows results and testimonials that are very impressive. I have a good friend in the USA confined to a wheelchair with spinal cord injury and he is considering coming to Bangkok for treatment. Please comment if you have information about epidural stimulation therapy for spinal cord injury or about the Clinic. Thank you.
