  1. Does anyone have experience with 'X (private clinic) and their epidural stimulation treatment for spinal cord injury?  The  website shows results and testimonials that are very impressive.  I have a good friend in the USA confined to a wheelchair with spinal cord injury and he is considering coming to Bangkok for treatment.   Please comment if you have information about epidural stimulation therapy for spinal cord injury or about the Clinic.  Thank you.

  2. There is a bee hive under the roof of our garden sala.  We would like it removed without killing them, if possible.  Does anyone know of a beekeeper or pest service, preferably in the Hang Dong area, who can do this?

  3. Does anyone know a local Thai optometrist or optician who would be willing to help a local Rotary Club build a vision-screening and free glasses program for poor children in the local Chiang Mai municipal elementary schools?   English-speaking ability would be useful, but not a prerequisite.  If you know someone could you send me a message with his/her contact information.  Thank you.

You are unsung heroes in my eyes but you are doing what the authorities should be doing , however that is another matter . I will p/m you to see if the idea can be brought to my town . Great work and keep it up .

The Thai Ministry of Public Health Non-Communicable Diseases Section is working on this problem with a Merit Maker Drown No More Program, but they have trouble getting the funding they need to make it a truly national program. Swim instruction should be taking place in the elementary schools, we need to get the Ministry of Education involved.  We teach 4th-graders, like to start earlier, but little kids require a great deal more supervision in the water, and the costs would skyrocket. We are trying!

How do they drown exactly? Strong currents in rivers, cramping? Just curious. I don't remember children drowning when I was kid except for the odd diving into shallow water accidents.

The basic problem is that only about 25% of the people here in Thailand have learned how to swim.  Even kids living on islands often do not know how to swim.  Ask the Thais you know, if they can swim, I think you will be surprised how many answer no.

  6. I'd contact Lanna Lawyers, they speak English, are based here in Chiang Mai, and they have a website.  They have a reasonable package which includes a will, power of attorney, and a living will.  I'm sure they would give you a quote for whatever you want and you could decide then if you think it's a good value.  They have a table at the Chiang Mai Expats Club meetings too.

  7. Lanna Lawyers, based in Chiang Mai/Mae Rim.  Bruce Lasky is one of the partners in this firm.  So, English would not be a problem.  There are Thai lawyers in the firm, so Thai law is definitely covered.  Lanna Lawyers have a booth at the Chiang Mai Expats Club meetings, if you wanted to check them out.

  8. Any of the Lila Massage places, there are several in Chiang Mai, one very close to Thapae Gate and another close to Wat PhraSingh on Ratchadamnoen (Walking Street).  The women employees are ex-prisoners and they studied massage in jail, so they would have a good job when they got out.  I've only had the foot massage, and it is always very good.  Prices are average and all is 100% above board!

  9. Heartbreaking, but sadly not an isolated event.  According to recent WHO and Thai Ministry of Public Health Reports, drowning is the leading cause of death in Thailand for  children ages 1-15, over 1,000 die each year.  The Thai Ministry of Public Health's Merit Maker-Drown No More Program and Rotary Club programs. are working to reduce this number.  My club, the Chiang Mai International Rotary Club will sponsor survival swimming and water safety training for our 1,000th 4th-grader this year.  Rotary Clubs in Patong Beach, and Lampang are also sponsoring survival swimming courses for poor children.  These courses are based on the Australian version of the Royal Life Saving Society curriculum.  With the generous help of the Safe Child Thailand U.K.-based foundation we are seeking to expand to build sustainable school-based survival swimming programs nationwide.  Want to learn more or help us with funding, equipment, facility rental, volunteer professional swim instructors (we use Thai instructors and provide training, assessment, and certification opportunities).  Personal message me, John Schorr, President Chiang Mai International Rotary Club, more info at www.cmirotary.org

  10. I completely agree with the posters above.  Warm Heart in Phrao is a great organization and a very worthy recipient of any help you can provide!  No organization is more dedicated to helping poor children in our area.  Their home for children is 73 kms North of Chiang Mai, contact Michael Shafer and Evelind Schechter they are the couple who founded the organization.  Well worth a visit.  Or, just go to their website, where they give details about how to help.

Thanks to the poster for giving much needed help to children in our area!

  11. There is a restaurant that serves several Indian dishes in Hang Dong.  It is The Venue (formerly Papa Rocks) in Kad Farang.  There is very little about the bar/music venue that would suggest they have decent Indian food, but they do.  They also serve Western food, and have a good IPA and Tiger on draught.

  12. There is a very nice, well kept 25 meter pool in Tarndong-Parkville, the development behind Kad Farang.  The pool is called Kad Farang Swimming Pool and there are swimming lessons offered there by Kru (Teacher) Garn.  I have swum laps at this pool for years and observed Kru Garn teaching children of all ages and adults too from many different countries.  He's excellent.  Kru Garn is also Coach Garn for a large and successful swim team based at Kad Farang Pool.

    Good luck

  13. We have used Seven Corners  Insurance for the USA, they work with United Healthcare.  Good easy application process. $148 for 52 year-old Thai wife for 4 weeks in the USA. $250 deductible, 1 million maximum.

This year will be the third time we used them, never had a claim, so cannot comment on that.
