  1. Thank you for all of the posts and advice in this forum. I just want to point out, though, that I'm not trying to live in Thailand because of the bars or that lifestyle at all; I'm not even male. As for academics, I'd say that I attended a university with rather good standing where I majored in economics and went on to some marketing and analytic work. For those who posted about the salaries and lifestyle afforded by working in Thailand, I respect your advice, but I really want insight more along the lines of whether it's common or relatively possible to gain a good position within a company in Thailand, be it an international one or a Thai one.

  2. How likely is it for an American citizen to gain employment within a business in Thailand? I'm not referring to teaching or non-profit work. Most of the listings that I've come across all state that they want Thai nationals -- which I am not. I'm particularly interested in a marketing role, but open to project management or human resources.

Thank you in advance for any helpful responses!

  3. I'm having trouble with tones, especially hitting the high tone. Another issue I have is when I have multiple falling tones one after another (such as in "dai peurn tee mai chai..." -- 5 falling tones in a row, you see what I mean?). If I pause and infuse effort into it, I can manage but then my sentence sounds stilted and doesn't flow smoothly.

Anyone have tips on how to speak at a fluent/smooth pace while still maintaining tone? I tend to either flatten out the tones or make them rising.

  4. The beatings, etc. don't bother me so much -- it's not the most extreme, or any more so than Western action films -- but what does bother me a bit would be the violence against women, namely all those rapes in the soap operas. Anyone notice that or have qualms about the message there?

  5. The issue of human trafficking is all too real, but yet so many people and nations turn the other way when it comes to adknowledging its presence. Unitl nations step up and adknowledge the scale of this horrifying issue, it will continue. Yes, there are some organizations desperately attempting to free those being trafficked and to end the whole issue, but there are too few of them and the trafficking industry is so large...

  6. On the one hand, I understand the need for propriety and to exude a proper image, in accordance with tradition. However, on the other hand, these are college-age individuals who are completely capable of making their own decisions, including their attire. I also disagree with the implication that dressing in a provocative manner will result in victimization; that just reinforces the notion that all victims of sexual assaults are at fault if they dressed in a seemingly provocative manner.

  7. Does anyone know the mythological story about how the white lotus came to be? I am only vaguely familiar with it; I know that it involves a selfless woman who gave so much for others that she died by a pond and her pure, selfless nature turned her into a white lotus. Does anyone know the whole myth from beginning to end, or know a site that has the myth? Thanks.
