  1. I had one of better meals in Bangkok at GARC last night. Being from L.A. I wouldn't dare to say that I know what the best BBQs taste like but what I have tasted in L.A. wasn't half bad. I think GARC was par with some of the BBQ joints in L.A. Meat was falling off of the ribs, pull pork was as good as I tasted and I especially liked the sauce as it wasn't too tangy. GARC is going to be a place I am going to make sure to stop by every week.

  2. Related question. My boyfriend proudly brought home the chanote today, big impressive legal document with garuda watermark, showing him as the legal owner of the small plot of land where our new "little house on the rice paddy" is 95% complete. He will get a blue tabien baan, and I guess I can have my name listed somewhere as being a resident there, on a yellow tabien baan. But we are not married, so do I need my name on a yellow book?

Should be no need to get your name in the Yellow book... will even be surprised if you can.

I purchased a freehold condo in Bangkok. Got the Blue book with no name in it. They said any Thai person can be entered into it but I deside whenever I want someone in/out of the book.

To get my name in the Yellow book I had to go thru an interigation about why I wanted my name in the book. There was a form where I had to list at least 8 good reasons and even then apparently there was no guarantee that they would allow me?!? After a few hours at the local Amphu and an interview by the senior officer they allowed me to get a yellow book with my name it. But for what? As far as I know it means nothing... just a piece of paper confirming my address. The ownership of condo is contolled by a different document from the land department anyway...

If you don't collect papers or it actually has any benefits I'm unaware off... don't bother.

    Mr. H.

    Mr. H.

I am in the same shoe. I bought a condo and I am trying to get a yellow book for the Thai driver's license and purchasing a car. What other information or document did they ask you for?

  3. I just went to look at NFL.COM - got a message there saying the website has been blocked!!!. by C.A.T..

No problem for me. Are you a Steelers' fan? I heard that C.A.T. has been asked by the NFL to screen out obnoxious fans! :D

I'm from the Raider Nation - now I understand why it doesn't work................ :D

EVEN WORSE! :o You're lucky that your computer didn't explode! :wai: The curse of ineptitude will remain upon the Raiders as long as Al Davis continues to be in charge! :D

When the old man took my Raiders out of L.A. my passion for the team went with it. :D

  4. I think you mean SECRET RECIPE... and yes...they are pretty good...

The Silom Road restaurant is just downstairs from the Saladaeng BTS station. Likewise they have a smaller branch at the Emporium. And other places around town.

Seem to have one of the better selections of real cheesecakes available around town. For those, including myself, who like them...

On a similar note, though, any nomitations for who does the best TIRAMISU around BKK??? Not just places that have that on the menu... But ones that prepare a really good, authentic version???

I had one yesterday that was better than most I tried in Bangkok at Central World, 5th floor. I think the place was called Italian Bar or something.

  5. In late September I bought a my place, Condo One X Sukhumvit 26, One bed, 51+ sq.m, for about 4000 baht over the original contract, about 83,000 THB per sq.m. I found the place through Thai real estate web site call prakard.com. No agent, just couple of Thai guys who invested together.

So you paid about 4,233,000 baht for the place. Are you saying that the original contract was for 4,229,000 (what you paid minus 4000 baht) or 4,029,000 baht (79,000 THB per sq.m.)?

The original off plan contract was for 79,000 THB per sq.m for 51.77sq.m which was 4,089,830. I paid 200,000 over the original contract which came out to be 4,289,830.

Just curious bbahngdori, what floor and what direction are you facing? Does this building allow cats? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, BangkokWildcat. I am not sure about the pet policy in the building. I am on the 24th floor facing east. Not a bad view.

  6. We have regulars comming in from across Bangkok for our Reuben - after initial smal problems with too little sauerkraut or mustard we have it down to the point now.

Thin sliced home baked Rye Bread with a good amount of mustard (you can choose US or Dijon) sauerkraut lots and lots of corned beef from our own production (we supply a number of 5 star Hotels with corned beef bsides a lot of other stuff) and all that for about 260.00 baht - I have been told by customers that that is the best deal in BKK.

The difference is that pastrami is smoked and one uses cooked instead of smoked corned beef for a Reuben. For January I have Pastrami on my shcedule and we will introduce it at the Bistro.

You can also order via chefsxp

Do you have pastrami on your menu yet? I checked ChefsXP and so far it's not on the menu.

  8. How does this place compare to Australian Outback (Discovery tower or were-ever they are located) for instance?
Kind of apples and oranges, really, though they share some common dishes like hamburgers. I live next door to The Great American Rib Co., so I eat there regularly and would probably anyway, so I've tried most of the menu. I really think some of the stuff is superlative in its class for Bangkok and other things surprisingly aren't. The quesadillas, for example, are dam_n near authentic. The pico's just about right, though more pickled and less cilantro-jalapeno-ish than it would be back home, but the preparation is excellent. The hamburger, on the other hand, is pretty lackluster for a place that specializes in American meat food. Not sure why, but it is. The pork ribs aren't bad as pork ribs go and I have them probably once a month. The BBQ chicken is BBQ chicken, something I never think much of, really. The chili isn't real chili, but it tastes decent enough and it's also used as the base for the nachos which also aren't technically real nachos, but also taste dam_n good. The beef ribs really shine, they're my favorite - they use a dry rub on them with heavy smoking and I can't recommend them enough. Kinda sparse on the meat compared to back home, but beef in Thailand is beef in Thailand. The cornbread is by far the best in town (much better than either Bourbon St. or Roadhouse) and the cole slaw is authentic and tasty as well. The beans aren't horrible, but they're not real ranch style beans and the potato salad isn't a recipe that I favor, but it's not bad either. I could take or leave the macaroni they added to the menu, it's okay. Seems like it's on there to give the kids something to order. The steak I had the one time I ordered it wasn't bad, but I'd go somewhere else for steak, frankly (Neal's Tavern or JW Marriott?). Finally, the New Orleans blackened duck they offer is really good. The taquitoes and onion rings and onion strings and other stuff doesn't really rub me one way or the other and I haven't tried any of the shrimp, but other people seem to like it.

Other than BBQ King up by Nichida you're not going to find anything more authentically American here in my opinion - I really like BBQ King's menu, but Nonthaburi's pretty far out and I don't make it much. If you get a chance, get Mark (the guy at BBQ King) to smoke you some sausage from Bei Otto. dam_n good, best I've had here by far. His barbecue and trimmings are all quite good as well. As for Roadhouse, I used to live in Silom and ate at there frequently from the time it opened until last year when I moved across town. There are some things on the menu there I really like, none of them are barbecue though. The barbecue there is really just not at all authentic, frankly. Chunks of meat covered in an inscrutable sauce that's tangy and chunky and doesn't quite fit. It's not horrible tasting as food goes, but it's not like anything you'd get if you ordered BBQ back in Texas (or Memphis or KC in my experience) and I think the disappointment kills it. On the other hand, the wings at Roadhouse are easily the most authentic in town in my estimation and their bleu cheese dressing both with those and on the wedge salad is fantastic and generous. They do a kick ass pork chop as well.

In closing my third grade book report on barbecue here let me say that Bangkok is a land of contrasts. The end.

Great review. Now I know what to order when I go this weekend.

  9. When you get to the airport, go to the metered taxi stand down on the right. Tell them you need to get to the Phuket Town bus station to catch the bus to Khao Lak.
Just take a meter taxi to the bus stop on the main road in stead of going to Phuket Town Busstation. The bus from Phuket Towmn to Khao Lak passes that road, and it saves you 45 minutes each way.

Is that bus stop pretty identifiable for someone new to Thailand? Taxi will know? Where is the schedule posted? Do they have that info at the airport? Buy the ticket from the driver?

I once caught a bus in Costa Rica on the same notion. The bus even had painted across the front Moctezuma (where I was headed on the Nicoya). Packed with people, chickens, the works. Well we pulled in to some sh*thole of a town late at night and to my surprise, they told me that was not the bus to Moctezuma...........

Spent the night on a cot in the back of a liquor store, no electricity.....

I have visions of this gal standing on the side of the road, no bus.........

Thank you, gentlemen. I am going with my Thai girlfriend so we will be o.k.

    Go Raiders, huggybear.

  10. I am going to Khao Lak for few days before coming back to Phuket for 4days.

I don't know whether to rent a car or take a taxi to Khao Lak from the Phuket airport and if I take a taxi, is there taxis to come back?

It's my first time to Phuket and I don't know if I need to rent a car to get around.

Another thing is that I am from the States and never driven on left side of the streets before.

Thank you in advance for your input.
