Cheers for the advice.
I have a BSc in Molecular Biology, work experience in banks and Shane's in-house teacher training course FELT.

I'm currently working for Shane Eng Schools Japan. I like Japan but the quality of life here is not good compared to Thailand. It's ridiculously expensive (250K salary), there's little private space and it's not very exciting. Shane said i'd be working a maximum of 6 hours a day, but in reality I start work at 12pm and finish at 9pm. My break times are spent preparing! I have to Mon to Thu and Saturdays, and sometimes I have to do cover days/training on Friday my day-off. They also tried to rape me with my accommodation, charging 75,000Y excluding bills, for a room that probably cost them around 40,000.
I want to come over and teach in Thailand, probably in Bangkok. What salary can I expect in LOS with one years teaching experience? Will I have to work weekends? How many hours do ESL teachers typically work in Thailand?
Basically, are things going to be better in Thailand? I know the nightlife's better for starters.
P.S. I understand that these questions may be a little unanswerable, but any advice would be appreciated.

thanks for that idea, i'll consider it
maybe it's better if I just go for the 30 days

I'll try and find the 20 year GBP/THB chart, in any case here's the GBP/USD one. Notice 1992, that was Black Wednesday and IR's racing to 15.5%, lot's of intervention. Won't be any support this time.
Down to 1.45 with $ and 1.16 with € right now
They [boE/Treasury/Cuntchops] will let the pound burn now, all the way to parity with the Euro at which point bye-bye British sovereignty - all of your Great British Pounds will become Eurotrash.
They will be hung by history.
that's an interesting theory

Ok, so it's best not to risk anything.
How about this?
Outbound: 04-Jan-2009
Inbound: 04-Feb-2009
I'll arrive on the 5th of Jan and it's 31 days to the 4th.
Or do I need to fly back on the 3rd of Feb to be on the safe side?

I want to go to Pattaya for just over one month. I know I can get a visa for for 30 days, but what happens if I want to stay 35 days? Where in Pattaya can I go to get my visa extended?
Will I be questioned upon entry to the country about my return date on my airplane ticket falling outside the 30 day limit?

I'm a British citizen and i'm planning on going to the far east to be an english teacher.
I have only worked and payed NI in the UK for about 3 years.
In a hypothetical situation where I spent my entire working career as an english tacher in the far east and worked upto a retirement age of 65-70. What would happen to me if I returned to the UK, with no capital? Would I end up in residential care or on a park bench? Perhaps they would make me work?
Actually I currently work for the local council , and I am aware that people with capital often receive exactly the same care as people without capital. The only difference being, the huge bill that the people healthy bank balances have to pay.

i'll gladly send her money for any hospital bills. the thing is i've heard so much negativity about thai women and their lies, that i'm not sure she's even pregnant.
-
apparently this is my handywork... but there is a high chance of a mis-carriage as the placenta is over her cervix
now she says she doesn't want my money, because i don't love her and don't want to be with her.
i wonder how long it will be before she needs some money for something?
Oops...Should've kept in your pants...
Question is, are you going to be a man and face up to your responsibilities?
RAZZ
And how sure are you its yours..????, let face it...she is a nurse in a hosptial, how difficult would it be to get her hands on somebodys sonograms in the hospital and pass them off as her own ??....just a thought...could be taking the "scam" to the next level..
The not wanting money etc....a classic reverse psycology tactic.
Not suggesting the above is the case just providing some food for thought...
i hate you..
youre an ugly man..
i don't want your money...
she's really childish

i dont believe in love and i sure as hel_l don't want to get married

"on friday i told her i didn't love her and never would and that she should go and find another man. she cried, said bye and I haven't heard anything since. hopefully i wont hear from her again."
But, she still managed to cheat you out of 10,000THB. She sounds like she's a real smart cookie. Here's some more advice: unprotected sexual intercourse with a prostitute is dangerous to your health: physical, emotional, and financial.
your right...it's a learning curve
last time i give any hooker my email/phone details
my holiday cost me £2200, instead of £2000
my initial hiv test came back neg and urine neg, so things are looking up

my friend is a nurse at a governemt hospital in bangkok. she is definitely a real nurse.
i sent her some money (10,000) because she needed to go to the doctors and it cost her 5000bht.
THB 5000 at a goverment hospital and she is a nurse at said hospital ??....the number seems very high, considering a part of her package at the hospital would almost certainly be a medical scheme....ie staff discount...
Even if she wasnt a nurse.....isnt the THB 30 medical scheme still in effect for goverment hospitals ??..
Alarm bells are ringing for me....
she is a nurse 100%. i've seen the other sisters standing behind her in the hospital when we chatted on the webcam. I've seen her in uniform. when i was going home my taxi dropped her off at the hospital so she could go to work. she talks about nursing terminology. Now that doesn't mean she moonlights as a hooker i know, but i raelly don't think so.
i think you are right about hospital workers being entitled to free medical care, but this money was to pay for a private doctor as she is very embarrassed. she rekons she can't work in the hospital when visibly pregnant as her baby has no father, apparently this is very shameful. But it looks like she's going to have to learn to live with it.
she appears to be extremely upset, and this is tottally screwing my head up. she rings and starts crying saying "why you don't love me". everytime we end our she says she will try to lose me, and this time i hope it's for real.
someone else tolled me to give her £200 for an abortion. she says she would never do this, but thats her decision. I sent the money to clear my conscience.

James, your post indicates that you are young and naive young chap. You talk about a friend who slept with her. You think it's your responsibility to care for ths woman. It's unclear why your friend isn't involved, but you are. You seem intent on getting f##cked by this woman, emotionally and financially, and that's your choice. Paraphrasing a comedian, "God wouldn't have made farangs sheep, if they weren't meant to be sheared."
on friday i told her i didn't love her and never would and that she should go and find another man. she cried, said bye and I haven't heard anything since. hopefully i wont hear from her again.

hi guys
my friend is a nurse at a governemt hospital in bangkok. she is definitely a real nurse as I have seen her on a webcam at work. she says she hasn't slept with another person since July , and he was her first.
i sent her some money (10,000) because she needed to go to the doctors and it cost her 5000bht. she has now done two pregnancy tests and says they are both positive. She rekons she's keeping the baby irrespective of whether I help.
I have no real proof , except her word , that she hasn't slept with anyone else. She comes across as an innocent girl compared to a bar girl, so i believe her. But I don't know her that well so she could be lying to me.
many people have already told me to block all incoming calls and emails from her and forget about it.
I don't know what to do...I really need to go back out to LOS and see for myself

do you know what the nightlife is like in taiwan?
-
If you aren't wedded to the idea of being in Thailand you might want to look into teaching in Taiwan.
Check out www.tealit.com
Does working in Taiwan pay better?

I think I would have much more fun in Bangkok than I would in Japan, although I really want to visit Japan as it looks so whacky.
So what's the best thing to do as far as working in Bangkok goes? Buy a plane ticket and come packed with a suit and degree certificate?
How much cash do you think i'll need as a safety net?

I have caused some problems for a lady in Thailand and need to send her some money £100-200
She says she has a bank a/c and I read that I can do an electronic transfer.
I bank with HSBC
Can you advise?

The real International schools won't hire you without a proper teaching certificate from a western country. They won't hire you without experience. And they won't hire you off the street without references. They prefer Master's level with teacher certification and experience. They don't toss 85-150K baht and per month at just anybody.
Public schools and private language schools won't offer you much more than 40K a month, enough to live in a crappy room and enjoy a night out once a week. Wears thin after a while.
ok, thanks for the reality check
have you taught in Japan, are things easier there?

ok, so i'd stand a much better chance of getting a job if i did a tefl online course.

I don't really enjoy teaching adults very much as they too many grammar questions. I think i'd enjoy working only with children. I only have experience of teaching at maximum , eight kids though. I imagine the classes are pretty big in Thailand, right?
